Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Review of Toby Bedford’s performance in the TAC Cup Grand Final from AFL Draft Central ~ Scouting notes: 2018 TAC Cup Grand Final

#15 Toby Bedford

“He set the tone early with a great tackle inside 50 and just seemed to find space around the ground winning the ball. At times he danced around opponents and tried to set up plays, and while he was not as effective as his past two finals, still had a few eye-catching moments. He kicked an important goal in the second term to keep Dandenong’s momentum high, he just did not have the four quarter consistency on the day, picking up nine of his 10 touches in the middle two quarters.”

The next Generation academy's are a little different for the southern clubs.  Clubs outside NSW and Qld teams only have priority access in the drafts to indigenous and kids with a parent born overseas.   The Qld and NSW teams have priority access to all kids in their academy's.

It is an unfair structure not only to the clubs but also to kids that don't fit into those 2 categories.  I'm involved in a Junior Club that is in another AFL clubs region, we had kids miss out on getting selected into the NGA that are absolute guns and deserve the opportunity to be a part of the program and we had kids that couldn't get a kick in a stampede get selected because of their multi cultured back ground.

Arent there already pathways for elite juniors?

so if we nominate him with our second round pick which is around pick 35 another club has to use their first round pick to take him from us?

Am I correct

At 173cm he is the same size as Spargo... can you carry two smalls in a modern AFL side?

Interesting

Before he was dropped on the eve of the finals, JKH (174cm) played in the same team as Spargo that IIRC beat WCE and GWS.

I haven’t as I taped it. WJ might have or someone else.

Quite right Mr. Leg. I did tape the TAC Cup Grand Final with the intention of watching it during my week off work but it’s taken a while to get around to it because of the wonderful weather up here on the Gold Coast. I finished the task this morning.

I suppose that what we’re looking at in Bedford is a player who might be a Daniel Rioli type who exerts a great deal of defensive pressure with his pace and tackling but isn’t going to necessarily rack up high possession numbers. In the preliminary final - the game in which he received a lot of accolades from the draft watchers - he managed only 13 touches

In the grand final, he started off slowly but did lay some strong tackles without getting any other stats. He really didn’t get into the game until the second quarter and was credited with 10 disposals altogether for the game.

He showed out from time to time with some good runs, a few effective tackles, some glimpses of excitement and potential but on this performance, I can’t see any opposition club putting in any early bids for him. He’s certainly not going to challenge for Melbourne’s midfield any time in the immediate future  - his pace and skills are good but need development.

I would like to think we could get him either as a late selection in the draft or, more likely as a rookie.

On very minimal watching him it appears the idea of Toby Bedford is better than Toby Bedford.

I mean, we really could do with a small forward with pace and x factor but he just doesn't get enough of the footy at the moment or hit the scoreboard.

This was also a problem for Dion Johnson who we've just delisted...

My understanding is that he has elite small forward traits, however like you said he doesn't get enough of the ball or hit the scoreboard often enough. If he did then he'd probably be in the first or second round of the draft not the 3rd. His short comings can be worked on and developed. If his attack on the footy is good then it's just a matter of getting to the ball more often. I'd back the development staff at the club to help elevate his game, he could be a rough diamond. I think his ability is superior to Dion Johnstone by the way.

12 touches a game doesn't impress me, nor does 1 goal a game.

But 8 tackles and 3 clearances are more impressive numbers. That's a guy who can win it in tight and be a really aggressive tackler.

I'd want to know why he's not finding the ball in space more. Is it work rate, is it the position the team puts him in or is it a feel for the game thing that might be able to be taught.

I'd like to know why he's not getting a lot of the ball...

Feel for the game I think is not so easy to teach.

You either have it or you don't.

...but there could be other reasons as you say.

Surely he'll be a late pick 54, 62 or 91. He's worth a punt if he has the pace everyone is talking about.  I want pace, pace and more pace in this year's draft and a developing key forward as well.

Agree. We will likely use 54 or 62 on Bedford or those points.

I think the earliest nominated offer for him could be Bulldogs at 45.

He has the skills and pace that we need. Needs 12 months in Casey development at least.

Sorry meant might not be able to be taught.

That said, I look at Hawthorn, they had Cyril, just line him up and he'll go out there and get to the right spots and make an impact. But they also had Breust and Puopolo as pressure forwards. Puopolo was a state league defender. Breust played rugby growing up. Somehow the Hawks got those guys in positions to maximise their talents.

Bedford might not ever get more than 10 touches a game but if he's in the right spots and it's 10 good touches and 5 big tackles that's a very handy player

Cyril or Jetta (Lewis) never got high possessions but didn't they have an impact!

Mc Carthey will get him right, Nev will assist in his personal development and Gawny will keep him down to earth. Suspect he will play a game or two!

Bedford is quick. No doubt. Whilst he doesn’t get the footy 25 times a match, his danger is tackling, pressure, goalkicking and assists.

Definitely worth any draft pick after 50.

Can he go as low as 91?

Can O'Rielly go at pick 54?

Can English go at 62?

I've settled on Sturt at 23 and Duursma at 28.

Like to get Hind, C.Wagner and Lockhart as rookies.

I've changed my mind again.

I don't want to go for the WA picks because of the go home factor.

So I'm going out on a limb and saying McKenzie will drop to 54 and Ayton-Delaney will drop to 62.

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh

The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P
