Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

New CEO - Gary Pert

I have concerns like a few others on here which I think are reasonable to express:

According to the grapevine and the evidence at hand:

Pert developed his professional career in an environment which is not like our own.

He has shown a heavy hand in the past, and a disposition to involve himself in footy dept. matters.

Just so we can be clear about Eddie Everywhere and Perty's involvement in the footy dept at the Pies. Here's Eddie E's explanation and the url if you want to read the full article :-

McGuire said the relationship between Malthouse and Pert at Collingwood became fractious, but praised them for their roles in the Magpies' 2010 premiership.

He also said he fuelled some of the friction between them.

"When you have a football department which is strong, sometimes you need to have an administration which is strong as well and Gary Pert being a champion footballer and a well-placed administrator was positioned into the football department at times to make sure everything was going the right way," McGuire told Triple M.

"As the president of the club, you sometimes position people into situations.

"Yeah, there was no doubt there was some friction there along the way and agreements made and falling out along the journey in the succession plan - that's been and gone.

https://au.sports.yahoo.com/malthouse-rips-pert-over-afl-role-015621443--spt.html

Hopefully this answers one of the biggest knocks against Pert.  Eddie clearly states he positioned Pert into the football department.

Of course that would have ruffled feathers. But don't forget the footy dept there was extremely dysfunctional and clearly by Eddie Everywhere's own admission he was responsible for the admin interference.

I would imagine there can be a lot of deadwood in a footy Club that has to be continually sorted. This usually results in people being very negative. No surprises there.

We may well lose 1 or all of the 3 internal candidates because they didn't get the job. But at least 2 would have felt the same way if one of them had been appointed. PJ set that up. You can't blame the Board or Pert if they leave. Of course I hope they don't leave.

I would be very surprised if PJ didn't have any role in the process that was setup to select the next CEO. For instance identifying key issues for the club over the next 4-10 years and therefore the best skill set for those issues. That doesn't mean he would have been included in the final decision. He would most likely be seen as not being impartial as he had several candidates that he apparently has groomed for the role and therefore would have been compromised in making an independent unbiased decision.

As far as culture is concerned. Roosy invested a lot of time into the Admin to make sure they were on the same page culturally as the footy team. Perty and Roosy go back a long way. I'd be very surprised if he wasn't consulted about Perty and his likely impact on the culture he had a lot to do with creating. If Roosy hadn't have backed him I'd be surprised if he was selected. I don't have any inside info but it makes sense.

Pert is a great get. Wiser heads prevailed on this one. Pert - who has experience - against someone with no business experience. Good call to go with the tried and true. Melbourne cannot afford to appoint anyone who could fail, we are in a good position and have to go with the safe - and logical - option. We want to be in a position such as the likes of Collingwood are in, and who better to get us there. Personally I couldn't care what the critics have to say, I mean, our coach was involved in a systematic doping regime, so I am pretty sure whatever skeletons Pert has in the closet - they aren't as serious as setting up doping programs to inject our players. Welcome aboard Gary.

Pert has a healthy ego.

He may well be a good appointment but there may be a downside if current staff leave.

He will ruffle some feathers. There will be a noticeable difference to style of PJ.

You are making a lot of assumptions here based on what.

I have bumped into PJ a few times. He looks like he's hard as nails and ruthless. People wouldn't have stayed at MFC who weren't performing. s far as I'm concerned a CEO's single greatest asset is their judgement. I would hope that any CEO we have has a very healthy trust to back their own judgement over anyone else's. If you think that is ego and is a negative thing then so be it. I see it as critical self belief. Ego is something very different.

We can't know how much of the negative decisions at the Pies were caused by Eddie Everywhere or Pert. The article above is an example of one of the biggest. What we do know is that under Pert their membership doubled and he is responsible for state of the art facilities. The main focuses for MFC in the next stage of its development. We also know he has a very solid commercial background outside football as well as a rolled gold football pedigree.

No doubt there will be some turnover. It's to be expected when under PJ 3 internal candidates put up their hands. It's not Pert's fault if this is why they decide to leave.

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but do we know for sure that any or all of the internal candidates applied for the position? I would be pleased if they had the confidence to do so, but equally, not disappointed if any of them believed they were not ready for the job yet.

This was reported in The Age and I think elsewhere.

He is understood to have beaten a field of internal candidates that included Demons football manager Josh Mahoney, chief financial officer David Chippindall and commercial operations manager George De Crespigny. Pert will start his new position in October.

Interesting that those guys put their hand up for the job. Who would have guessed?

"...understood to have beaten" isn't quite the same as confirmation, though. It may be true...and it may not. The writers (Peter Ryan and Jake Niall) have clearly hedged their bets with that language. If they were certain, they would have written it with less ambiguity, such as "He beat a field of internal candidates..."

Probably a bit off topic, but the language of recruitment is obtuse. Anyone who can manage a computer generated resume can be a “candidate”. Even being on a “short list” is not necessarily a big deal. I once found myself on a short list and was asked to attend an interview for a very senior job I didn’t apply for and wouldn’t take as it was in a different city.

There would no doubt have been internal candidates, and good ones at that. How close they got is anyone’s guess, and journos aren’t that good at guessing.

Ahh yes. Google search showing plenty now, including DL posts on the topic from 2011. I averted my eyes for fear I turn to stone.

Did Bartlett actually say this or was it a comment from whoever he was speaking with at SEN?

Yes 100% said it. Question may have been something along the lines of the appointment came from left field

In that case, I'm impressed. While it's obvious to us that a solid, accountable board which can maintain confidentiality is beneficial, for him to actually say what he said means he has absolute faith in the ability of his Board members to keep a secret. If he had any doubts, he wouldn't have said it.

I have thought about this a bit and I reckon it could work (though I have my reservations).

Some have said it could be Schwab 2.0 but there is a difference in that Schwab walked back into the club with Jimma, Gaz (though Gaz didn't have an official role until 2011) and Cuddles as his wing men. The boys club let him sail through Steven Bradbury style until it was impossible to ignore anymore.

As far as I can tell, Perty has no home grown allies to help him bed down his position. I'm of the impression that Ed played that role until he realized that he had to go if he wanted to stay president.

Also, I have read a joke on BigFooty that he got pizzed off at Collingwood once cos someone stole his car park one day. Might be a bit like that Neeld/Brett Lovett story about the jubes in the coach's box in Darwin but can anyone shed any light on this?

Pert standout of applicants

Applied a few weeks ago

Strong board that doesn’t leak

Achieved a lot in a short time at Pies

Bartlett actually said:

"... PROCESS has been going for quite a few weeks..."

Not that Pert applied a few weeks ago.

Didn't say "..short time...".  Just that he achieved a lot in his time there, which he did, especially with where the Board wants to take the club.

Very little discussion on it, except Bartlett refereed , as SF says,  a non-leaking Board.  As if to say the ' experts' were bind sided by appointment and a bit miffed they were not in the loop - that's you Damien Barrett.(who has no idea IMO)

What does concern me is the constant sniping by John Rothfield on the non-transparency of the process.

Dr. Turf needs to understand its confidentiality that' s most important and on Monday's Footy Classified, Chris Judd gave an excellent summary of his well sourced knowledge of what happened. Worth a listen, taking it up to Barrett.

OK dude, I did the best I could, posting in the car, at the lights, listening on my phone, near enough for me. I posted the audio in the other thread.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
