Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Going by reports I thought Kielty would be before Petty, so either people reporting have been inaccurate or kick in guts to Kielty? Unsure whats going on TBH.

I'm not suggesting Keilty hasn't done this, but this quote about Petty was telling:

"Petty has impressed for the Casey Demons in the VFL, especially with his ability to pick up Melbourne's defensive concepts and play his role in the system the club is trying to implement"

Thanks, that makes sense, he's obviously bought in to what they're teaching him. Haven't seen him personally but exciting seeing another 18yo potentially debuting.

I hope they avoid debuting Petty this week. From the reports it sounded like he had a poor week last week, and I rather a young guy coming in to be playing well. We might be flying but can't flirt with form against an in-form Collingwood

Pros and cons on this Mickey.

I didn't really think Spargo was sensational against the Richmond VFL side the week before he got his call up and he played a blinder against Essendon, but ....

Sometimes with youth, you just have to go for it and hope it comes off - either way any debut is usually uplifting for the whole team. Usually younger players form jumps around by the week. An early mark or dropped one can make a huge difference to their mindset - similarly a good spoil.

Personally given Frosty is out of favour, I'm surprised Wags didn't get first crack and then, based on named squad, my logic would be to go the more experienced Joel Smith who may lack height to be a long-term CHB intercepter, but is certainly tall enough for Mihocek. Some will try and equate a Petty QB debut with Jack Watts, but really we are a vastly different side to then and the Pies were ultra physical with a chip on their shoulders as well in those days and we didn't have enough strength to help him. We do now.

Very pleased that we seem to be going with Pedo for this game - he just provides the extra insurance for Cox and Grundy - if injury befalls one of our bigs. I also like the fact that it forces Dunny back to the goalsquare on him and means Scharenberg and Langdon will have their work cut out stopping Hoges and T-Mac.

But I hope Hunt gets in and will be shocked if he's not the carry-over player at least. As I said earlier, they have the pace over us, we have the precision over them. Hunt can balance all that up a bit.

I think the club will take into consideration his form in general, not just one week.  From all reports his season as a whole has been really good, and he has some attributes that we need with Lever going down - he has good foot skills, reads the play very well and can take a grab.  He might still be a little undersized in terms of strength, but then Lever doesn't really go in to many one on ones and instead plays the third man up role, so I don't think that will hinder him too much.

Goody and the club have shown the ability to make the right decision more often than not, especially this season, so if they feel that Petty is the right man to go with them I'll be happy with that decision.

I remember when we previously picked an under-developed first year player for his first game on Queen's Birthday. What a difference today. If Petty plays, he's not going to be selected as the hope of the side like poor Jack Watts was required to be.

Petty?

Well for him the waiting (for a senior berth) won't be the hardest part. He is tough player, so i suspect he won't back down.

Not sure how much intercept work he has done and if he is learning to fly and breakdown opposition attacks.

If selected i reckon i'd tell him you got lucky and i would also let him know that if he makes errors he should prepare for pies fans (and some nuffy dees fans) to yell yer so bad.

Unfortunately i can't make the game so i won't be a face in the crowd but i look forward to him and Omac being walls in defence and clearing the ball into the great wide open wings of the 'G.

I think it will be Pedo for Tim Smith and Joel Smith for Lever .

I feel there might be a third change being Stretch ,who’s form in the last two weeks has been hard to ignore , for either Hannan or Spargo or even Melksham if he doesn’t come up.

Kielty has barely even got a mention in the Casey best's all year. And that is at VFL level. I am one that believes the gap between VFL and AFL is bigger than most believe. If you aren't going really well at VFL level and aren't consistently in the bests you shouldn't even be spoken of getting a game at AFL level. There was a time when Kielty was regularly getting in the bests, and he got drafted because of it, so I am not suggesting he isn't potentially an AFL level player, but he is hardly in great form to warrant selection at the moment. Its not a kick in the guts to not be handed a promotion when your form doesn't warrant it. In all likelihood whoever fills Lever's position this week probably won't be holding onto it every single week onwards, so those in the VFL need to be pushing themselves to their limits. That means getting in the best every week to warrant promotion.

I agree, just a few around here were pumping his tyres up thats all, but yes, not in the bests too often as you say.

There probably isn't a person on this site who doesn't want Kielty to get a game, so its understandable he comes into the equation at this point (as far as poster's discussion Lever's replacement). He does look the type of player who could fill Lever's role. I just question whether Kielty is in the type of form that warrants a promotion right at this moment. The challenge is there for him and personally I hope he eventually is the guy for the job, he would add a lot to our side. Kielty is versatile and can also ruck, so its a plus. He just needs to start really knocking that door down in the VFL.

Petty and Hunt trained with the VFL squad today. Won’t be playing

Garlett, Pederson, Stretch and Joel Smith trained with the AFL squad

Ben Guthrie reckons it’ll be JSmith and Pedo in for Lever and TSmith

This makes sense. Then Stretch to cover Brayshaw and Garlett to cover Hannan

Interesting that Goodwin has now confirmed that Tim Smith has been dropped on form....

While Smith had been battling a neck complaint and also had a sore ankle, Goodwin said the competition for spots meant a change needed to be made.

"It's probably form," he said.

"We felt last week that he lacked a bit of impact, but we've also seen what he can produce as well. It's really competitive for spots. We've got some guys at VFL level who are really pressing for selection and that's a great thing for our footy club."

And yet wasn't there an article in the paper after the dogs game that he had modified the positioning of his boot studs and now all was well? Tom McDonald of course.

Looks like Pedersen's in finally. It only took a concussion (for him) to get into the side. He should have thought of that weeks ago!

No Frost is telling. Looks like it will be Joel Smith to replace Lever, with Hunt an outside chance if we decide to pull a tactical shifty on Collingwood who have a bunch of small forwards.

DeGoey's the one to stop though, and Jetta's got that covered.

One bad game for the fringe players can mean instant demotion, as we see here.

Its cut throat but thats how it should be for a successful team.

Competition for spots. That a great sign. Not only do players have to be in top VFL form to break into the side, but they have to maintain that form once they are in it. Smith only had one down week, I thought he was great the week before, but it is a good sign to send. It says that at a minimum, players need to contribute at the top level every week. Smith didn't for just one week. He can consider himself stiff, but these are the standards of a top 4 side. He will now go back to the VFL, bust a nut to break back in, be a better player for it and we will be a better team for setting those standards.

Hear what you say but I am firmly convinced that Smith when playing well provides a better balanced team in that he can do more on the ground than Pedersen and Weideman while still providing a marking target and relief ruck.

Pedersen deserves a go but I have been really impressed by what Smith brings to the table.

Our forward dynamics on Monday will be very interesting to watch.

I agree re: Smith - he has all the attributes to be a very handy foot soldier for us going forward, but it's also heartening to see that we have so many players in good form that one bad game can see you dropped back to Casey.  There are no free games for many players and we're seeing that now.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
