This is where it is tough for the AFL, you want the best games shown in prime time and not just the biggest teams because as we know when you are financially poor club, getting the Sunday afternoon game every week doesn't help you grow.

Carlton getting so many prime time games is just mind-boggling. No team (let alone one as poor as them) deserve so many Friday night games.

Think about it. We had 23 years in the cold and it devastated our support base. They are coming up on 23 years without a flag and Gill and Fitzy still reckon that they deserve Friday night slots. 

No surprise as to why ratings are down.

And no surprise why we spent the past 50 Years struggling, because of AFL favouritism of power clubs, and our own incompetence off the field.

These days the NRL game is getting more skilled, due to the Storm, and they're kicking has learnt from Aus-rules, here in Melbourne, and to a lesser extent in Sydney town.

I enjoy the Organic simplicity of the NRL game, without all the arrogant ex-player media commentary we are showered with, in Victorian-AFL media...

Has been some incredible talent over the last period, JT, Inglis in his prime, Slater, Lockyer, every Storm winger in the last 10 years, Taumolo, Burgess etc.

I have to admit, with our winning form, I have forgotten all about the inequities of the draw, and simply look for the day/time of our next win. Winning cures all ills.

I have Foxtel/AFL app with Unlimited internet, both home and mobile, so I dont care about the friday night timeslot. Just want to see either the game or a replay regardless of time, whereas your standard Colonwood/Essedon supporter cant afford that stuff on centrelink payments.

League works very well on tv as the screen follows the line of play. Afl on tv you only really see the stoppages. If you want to really see whats going on you go to the game.

IT STINKS

In the 60’s through to the mid 2000’s it was fine. Now it’s rubbish. 

The commentating is now a part of the game. It should never be that

IMO the biggest problem is Thursday/Friday night games - these are the games that get the most people watching on TV and set the tone for Saturday AFL media and subsequent interest.

So far we've had 12 Thursday/Friday night games. 6 of them have featured Carlton, St Kilda or the Dogs. So that's half of the prime time games so far this year featuring rubbish sides.

There are 17 Thursday/Friday night games left for the season. 6 of them feature Carlton, St Kilda or the Dogs (one of them is actually St Kilda vs Carlton). That's more than one-third.

The AFL has two big problems. The first is that they have no flexibility in their schedule so they can't move games in/out of the Friday night slot. That means they're pre-determined and locked in based on the previous year's form.

However, the bigger issue is that the AFL doesn't properly allocate the games amongst clubs. There isn't enough variety in the teams we get to see on Thursday/Friday nights so it just becomes repetitive. And the AFL continues to do things like give Carlton, St Kilda and the Dogs a stack of prime time games when none of them made the finals and then, surprise surprise, all of them stink in 2018.

AFL no doubt paying the price for poor Friday night scheduling, but also constant media commentary on poor state of the game.

I'd be more worried about Table Tennis than NRL, NBL or Cricket.  Rugby League FCS.

Foreign foot ball sports are the enemy, IMO.

 

But our issue today is the product we put out there.  The congestion is horrible, because of rotations, and the lack of one on one match-ups.

The highlight skills we once watched, have slowly dried up. And are too-few, these days.

Soccer has long had the dominance in participation but it’s rarely translated into anything more solid. Remember that Soccer has had both genders for a lot longer and it’s played across all states. Netball is surely number one with girls but I think soccer is number two. 

Australia will always be a Rugby/AFL country. 

As for these ratings I say this is exactly what the AFL needed to wake them up to gifting so many did Friday night games to Carlton. It’s finally biting them in the ass. Ironically they finally caved and pulled back Richmond’s Friday night games just in the year they got good, maybe they were worried about Carlton doing the same thing. No danger of that now!

FWIW I think they should have two “floating games” that can be moved. The Friday night and Saturday 1:10pm slot should be the two, they’re as close together as you can get so it lessens the change in days and break. It should be chosen 6-7 weeks out as well. 

Would definitely minimise the potential of dud games on Friday night.

There really is no excuse for the completely irrational Friday night scheduling and rewarding teams for poor performance when this weird favoring of Carlton goes against there own policy of giving deserving teams the timeslot.

i grew up watching league, but now find it quite hard to watch as its so repetitive, you can tell what's gonna happen each play. with afl, there's so many ways that things can unfold. a great game of league (finals or state of origin generally) is amazing and great live. but, afl has a more consistent product. hopefully with the way that the dees are playing, more teams will start to play an attractive style of footy instead of dour, defensive games.

I also can watch on demand, but it is used to be good to sit down on a Friday night and watch a good game, and not the same teams each week.

I'm finding that AFL is too repetitive, and I prefer NRL when Storm play.

I miss the earlier AFL games of the 90's and early 2000's.  When the game was much more spontaneous,  less regimented.

Its too organised for me, these days.

We missed out because we were too weak kneed, and conservative, cow towing... And not footy minded enough off the field. Our own incompetence is what caused those bad years we endured, from the time of Smiths sacking, and on-wards.

At board level since Pre Smiths sacking, we have been atrocious.  Accepting the time of Barassi & Seddon. That ended like Whitlam,  came and went, far too quickly.

I agree with this, but this in't the biggest problem;  or all that would be needed would be to turn the sound right down. It's the product that is dying, from since the Pro times, slowly the playing field has become to small, for the run the players are developing.

the commentators and the tv station commentary try to sell us fibs by talking up the game that once did not need pumping up..

 

The game once did its own bidding. Without any fluff talk.

Umpires waiting for the TV add cue.

Bias in scheduling.

List management, and trying to get low on the ladder, for early selections. Happening again now this year. (the big blew)

VFL being trashed and teams losing happily as they teach the kids whist PAYING customers feel RIPPED OFF.

 

They are trashing the Aussie Rules game, without really understanding that... because they are all so arrogant, they think they can do anything, and get away with it !!!

In AFL, I miss the man on man match-ups, that would often stay for the whole match. star on star.

The surprise from an unexpected Torpedo Punt kick.

The high mark from the back of the pack, or from the side,,, and generally the open spaces that allow individuals to show their skills, running, dodging, weaving, opposite hand bounce, and drilling the ball low and hard from 48Mtrs thru the sticks on the run.

 

The clean simplicity and spontaneity that is allowed with having open spaces to do the things that highlight our game. 

 

I don't want to see WWE tag team wrestling, or basketball, or a version of soccer.

Wonder what the avg attendances per game and total attendances per game are between AFL and NRL. NRL supporters are notorious for not turning up to games due to it being on TV (State of Origin aside).

And they all seem to speak in humble and old fashioned respectful ways about the game, and only of one another in more hushed tones and with humor.

The NRL have a lot of talented people, and because the game is smaller than ours, there is more humility and a more of a communal feel about it all.

 

Our commentary all seem to come off like KnowitAlls and some sort of Toorak snobs.  A bit too high and mighty.

Its really off-putting, and that is why I mention Mike Williamson so often. He was so humble Re his position in the game, and always sounding like how appreciative he was in being in his position calling games. 

A genuine love of the game came thru in his excitement, which he didn't have to put-on,,, nor exaggerate. the ex players were only there foe special comments.

It was better that way, and I think the NRL still use that model of commentary.

 

In F1,  its mostly this way as well, although is starting to change, and maybe to its detriment.

 

When the Pro's start to call the games, it can get to being like pulling wings off Fly's.  All stats and tech talk, and too much boring crap. which soaks up all the excitement and jovial feelings.
