Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Thought it was interesting that they showed this on the AFL, whilst a great finish, are they getting on the wagon, or am I just dreaming for relevance?

I think it's relevance. Winning gets you noticed and we reap the rewards. Losers get shafted and we've been in the dark for so long. Hallelujah!!!

He was never my favourite player, and his recent work with MFC is questionable, but Garry Lyon was a gun. Could read the play, was an exceptional kick, and at times a match winner.

I was there that day and honestly we were sooo lucky. In the last 2 mins I can count at least 4 massive errors we made either one  taht should have cost us the game. As well as at least 3 massive errors from them that did. I remember even at teh game wondering how the hell we won.

MFC Error 1. With 2 mins to go ( right at the start of the clip) theres a Free kick against grinter every day of the week....smashed Glemdinning in the face or around the neck.Pretty crude but  Play on. got out of Jail. MFC Error 2. Spalding misses pretty straight forward shot ...should have cost us the game.   WC error 1 and 2  Terrible kick out from our behind that didnt reach the WC on the full so he  rushed and   kicked it down the middle ,  not toward the boundary AND  straight back to Johnson!  MFC Error 3 Johnson kicked it right to the teeth of goals, instead of to the top of the square,  and as such  it should have been easily punched through for a point.  instead WC defenders keep it in play....and a goal results.  WC error 3. After the ball up teh footy ends up with Wrensted running into goal in the last 5 secs. He just HAS to step around a pannicking Danny Hughes and give it off to the solo WC player alone at 30. Rushes his shot. MFC error 4. Why hadnt we  flooded back? and how could it be that a WC player WAS alone at that point at 30 metres out.

I watched the replay back then and was sure we wouldnt win any more finals...and we ended up making the GF. So what the hell did I know. I guess in close finals everyone panics.

Was great to see a glimpse of ( now deceased) Sean Wight at his peak there also. He was a dead set gun before injury.

I remember the excitement, sitting in the  upper deck behind the goal when GL3 snapped what we thought was the sealer, followed by the terror of that last thrust forward by WCE.

Cant remember quite when but Alan Johnson kicked a lifting goal earlier in the game.  Horribly wet and pretty cold at old arctic park

He was a superstar and his football ability might be underrated by the wider footy community.

Only two Demons have made three or more All Australian teams -  Lyon and Ron Barassi (3 each).    Stynes, Neitz and Flower made two each.

He won two best and fairests, kicked 426 goals despite playing all over the ground before settling forward.  He was named in the MFC team of the century and has a very handy 56% win record in 226 games,   with 7 seasons as captain..

How often would he be thrown into the middle at 3 quarter time when were in trouble, and turn the game around?  Great player and leader.

That whole season was terrific for the Dees with such a string of great players 'at the ready'. Saw most games and the finals ascent into the realms of possibilities.

Due to his injuries (back), his form dropped somewhat in the latter career for Lyon and I thought that he was played too often at that time (of the injuries), taking on risky appearances month after month. His heart was in it, obviously and his skills were well above average; it was difficult to imagine a Demons team without him on the field. When fit - from the moment he came into the side and for the entire period before the back problems, he was a superstar within a team of several superstars, and the rest of the team were pretty awesome in support.

Sean White was the hero that day. It poured rain through the first half and we could barely score a goal - had two by half time. But Sean was sent forward at the start of the third quarter and started hauling in marks, kicked two goals himself and spearheaded a nine goal second half. Great memories indeed.

A mate of mine learned never to leave early.....

He had enough with 10 minutes to go as we were 10 points down and hadn't scored in the final quarter.  So to get out of the car park off he went.  Got to the gate as the first roar went up when WIlliams goaled.  2nd roar 2 minutes later as he trudged through the car park when Lovell goaled.  Another roar as he got to the car, but this was when WCE scored.  Turned the car radio on to hear Lyon score the winning goal.

I was there that day, a young bloke but i remember it clearly. Dave Williams gather and hands off to Gaz were underrated.

Lyon was such a gifted natural footballer.  His back injury cost him 50 games easily. I think people forget that he made All Aus (5 Times) as a CHB and as a Forward, pretty much unheard of these days. He captained Victoria, had 2 years as a 79 & 77 goal Full Forward. 3rd all time goalkicker at Melbourne after playing his first 3 years as a back.  Finished 2nd in B&F in his first year in 1986 as a 19 year old.

Too many people cant separate his involvement with Coaching and his time as a player. He was a star player.

That game was a Northey special. 11 goals to 10, a typical Northey era slog.

Was behind the goals where Lyon kicked that goal. The stands at Arctic Park were so shallow, if you weren't on the boundary fence it felt like being a mile away from the action. (In reality it was probably only half a mile.) Wrensted was so far away no one at our end properly knew what happened until the siren went and the score went up. Go Demons WTF!!!

Geez how many free kicks and 50 meter penalty was there that would get picked up today, the game has changed

"The umpires have put away the whistle!" Standard practice at the end of a close one in those days. These days the umps do it for the whole match.

It was sunny in all the rest of Melbourne. That's why it was called Arctic Park, bad weather was sucked to it like a magnet.

From memory John Todd came out in the Perth media and said we were an ordinary team.

Well, John Todd would be best placed to recognise ordinariness.

We might have been ordinary in the sense of not star studded, but those Northey teams knew how to put up a hell of a fight. It took a lot to beat them.

I went to a corporate lunch where Malthouse was speaker. He was asked about the WCE days. He had taken over from Todd and was brought in because the WCE had suffered some fearful kickings, Neeld era stuff.

He asked the players about one such. One by one he interviewed them, said, who was your opponent. Hardly any player knew the name or number. Do you think you beat him on the day? Nearly all said yeah, I got the best of him. A few similar questions with similar answers. They had no idea.

John Todd, coach extraordinaire.

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

    HIBERNATING by KC from Casey

When they locked up the rooms for summer at the end of last year’s football season, the rooms gathered cobwebs, the atmosphere became dense and the place developed a sleepy feel. They opened up the rooms to let Casey out to play on Sunday but the team was still hibernating and they missed the bulk of the opening quarter. By the time they worked out it was game on, their opponents from Box Hill had accumulated five goals and, if the game wasn’t over, it might as well have been. For a se

A FORK IN THE HAWK by George on the Outer

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side. But Melbourne’s empahtic 55-point win at the MCG on Saturday has truly put a fork in the Hawk and turned that history well and truly on its head. The Demons have now won nine of their last ten encounters with the other result, a draw.     And like a fork, it was the multi-pronged options that Melbourne had all across the ground.  It certainly helped that Hawthorn
