Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

So well regarded by the AFL that he was dropped like a hot spud. In my experience there is always more to the story than comes to light. I’ll bet my house that it wasn’t just the affair, but the way he behaved throughout. Odds are his performance suffered as did his relations with other staff.

There’s  also the potential effect on sponsorships. No, Lethlean is fatally damaged goods, and we don’t want him. GDC also has AFL experience and hasn’t put a foot wrong with the Demons. And he has a clean slate. He’s miles ahead of Lethlean.

See the trouble is you have no idea what happened & so jump to Ill informed conclusions.  The thing is ....it was “just an affair” with a consenting adult ....not really our business ...only affects the people involved and they have to live with it and the repercussions.  Don’t care if he comes to the Dees or not ...I just want the best possible person & if it is him ...then so be it.  He is a human being who made a gross error of judgement ....not  for us too judge & yes I do know what happened & can categorically state it was what it was so you can throw your “conspiracy” theory out the window.

On Footy Classified last night Caroline Wilson gave an update.  She said the club is plugging for Josh Mahoney as CEO but because of our 'financial position' the AFL wants to call the shots.   I reckon that is AFL speak to keep us on their leash.

We may not like what she writes at times but she gets excellent inside info from the AFL.  She played a weekend interview with Goodwin and he sounded strongly behind Mahoney and talked about our succession planning.

I think she said we have engaged a 'head hunting' firm - not sure if that was to help get Mahoney over the line or to be able to demonstrate due process and good governance have been followed.

At the end of the day, I would like us to control our own destiny and strongly feel our Board should be allowed to choose the best person for the job.   I strongly support the idea of succession planning and promotion from within.

I will be filthy if we end up with an AFL's 'job for the boys' appointment.

Chairman Glenn Bartlett is former Managing Partner of Australia toughest Tier 1 legal firm Clayton Utz.

I reckon he'll have  Gill covered.

You can be filthy but the "AFL jobs for the boys" landed us Peter Jackson.  As for being on the AFL "leash" it's been a pretty good ride so far.

Fair comments.

My objection is if the AFL override's MFC's first choice, which was the tone of the FC discussion last night.

I understand the sentiment but if they override it they will do it for good reason.  I'm in no position to know who would be best appointment but they got PJ right.

I will be very disappointed should this happen. I had thought we'd moved on from those days and had a fully functioning Board and administration. If the AFL override the MFC, then clearly we are not as independent as I had thought we had become. Mind you, it's a pretty big "if".

We've been in the past, shooting ourselves in the foot from board level;.... and I have no confidence that we will EVER get great footy board people, as long as its connected with the MCC.

I do not want any board members connected to the MCC.   i want footy people with great business sense;,,, but mostly, a deep understanding of footy and footy clubs.

stuff the stuffiness...  as gentlemen Jim wanted.

I'm with you 'Bob', the only thing I will add is that it was Demetrio (personal involvement) that got PJ on board and I'm not sure Dill has the same acumen.

I just hope he follows PJ's lead on this he (PJ) hasn't got much wrong so far.

Hmm the gentlemen Jim era did not exactly go well. A great player and a great person who no doubt saved us from immediate destruction however his blind decision to continue after his health went south almost cost us our existence. The current board has got us to this point I am prepared To trust them.

Anyone but Lethlean. Not only for his totally inappropriate dalliances, but fir his arrogant assumption he would walk into the Carlton or St Kilda CEO jobs. Let St Kilda keep him.

What about a Lethlean, Macnamee joint ticket.

Bring back table top dancing in the board room I say.

"Gentleman Jim" wanted to rid the club of stuffiness.

so do i.

Jimma wasn't a great businessman, nor a great list coordinator, but he had the passion to try to take the club in the right decision.

But that went wrong...  at the hands of many.  The wrong people;,,,  but no worse that getting it wrong in the early 2000's, or for decades earlier than that.

In fact we've been getting it wrong since the 'end of time' Smithy days.

But this thread isn't about the 'Jimmas' of the club.

This is about the handover from (AFL endorsed) PJ... to whoever...   Hopefully AFL endorsed.

I trust the AFL's acumen, in finding better Footy people to do the job,  than our boards of the past 50Yrs_

Mahoney has been excellent. Some might think it’s a tad early but he will get there soon enough. We might lose him to another club if we don’t reward him now

Why do we always live in fear of loss at Melbourne.

This is one of the same fears,,, of recruiting blemished talented players;  and of out of contract players on our list. may leave, IF...

The same fears carry over, to turn us negative at matches, when things are tough,,, and we have to climb our way back into a game.

We have to overcome this, just as the players have to overcome their fears and negatives, as they are taking hold.

Mahoney will do whats right for him, anyway...  sometimes that "old acquaintance" thingy,  takes too much toll on us all.   And spoils our output.

This business of the AFL dictating the CEO's of the MFC to the Board is a furphy.

I've spoken to several Board members over the journey who are adamant the Board made the final decision on PJ not the AFL. Demetrio found him and put him forward after being asked by the Board for any suggestions but they had the capacity to go with someone else if they wanted to. Having said that, I'm sure if the AFL thought their choice was bad they would have said something. Luckily for us the Board listened to them.

Given the footy dept looks very settled hopefully for the next 5-10 years the major job of the next CEO will be ensuring the long term financial security of the Club. First decision which will effect the next 20-30 yrs will be how they utilise the money from the Bentleigh Club and the Leighoak etc. The second will be growing memberships and sponsorships. That is going to require very smart marketing knowledge. Is Mahoney the right man for that?  I'd be guessing de Crepny would be more skilled in that area.

Maybe after that's all setup you can go back to a footy based CEO for the future transition of the footy dept.

He was an ex hockey player who came 2 the game late. He had a bigger turning circle than the Queen Mary, couldn't read the ball in flight & had poor footy IQ. The fact he played 100 odd games is more a reflection of how crap we were.

What a load of garbage. The guy was in our 2000 grand final side, plus was a regular in the 2004 side that was on top of the ladder after 18 games. He was a very solid key defender in his best years, and lost a few years out of his prime to injury.

That said, I doubt that he is the right person for this job.

The people making it good were/are being aided by the AFL's help.   WE do not know how good it is, without their support.

The AFL have had a much bigger influence on getting us back on track, than is known.

The media are aware of it, and are calling on the AFL to do the same, with Carlton, and the Suns.

I’m far from convinced that the AFL has a monopoly on football management intelligence.

I trust our current board to make the right decision unprompted by the AFL.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
