What is the Weid's role

Just wondering is there any other team that plays 3 talls in their forward line. We also play Fritsch who has a strong overhead marking ability.

WCE, Adelaide and GWS certainly play two talls that immediately spring to mind but I cannot think of any that play three recognised talls.

Weideman is a natural footballer.

He shows it when he's around the ball, very quick hands in close and usually makes the right decision.

This is in addition to his ability in the air which will improve over the next few seasons plus he doesn't mind sticking a hard tackle.

I don't think you can really say we play 3 talls in the forward line, yes Hogan, TMac and Weid are 3 tall who mainly play forward, but with TMac and Hogan wandering so far and Weid doing the chop out in the ruck it'd be very rare that they ever are in there at the same time. Others have said it, but Weid gives those 2 the chance to use their tanks and get up around the ball or be the distributors between the 50s, while keeping our structure right within the forward 50.

I can see a game or 2 this year where Weid could kick 3/4/5 goals in the same mode Jenkins does with Adelaide, getting a massive mismatch with the best defenders trying to take Hogan and TMac - not sure he'll get the same over the top easy ones that Jenkins gets.

They're not normally inside the 50 at the same time.

They orchestrate it that it's usually only two.

What I love is that normally when you try three tall fwds you get burnt by the lack of mobility.  However for us having Hogan and Tmac who are both super mobile we have created a match up nightmare for the opposition. This is only going to get better.

I remember watching Weid get double and triple teamed last year like Hoges when he started!

Because we were so bad at marking around the ground last year they have now used TMac and Hoges to make this a strength. I did hope that weid would be doing this role as he is not developed yet.

We saw a couple of marks from him against the bummers that show that he can do it without having to be the forward target. IMHO I think that the coaches have got it right and we just need to play 50 games with these structures. Having medium players that mark well overhead is adding to our scoring and defensive pressure too.

Adelaide - Walker, Jenkins, McGovern
West Coast - Kennedy, Lycett, Darling
GWS - Patton, Cameron, Himmelberg
Port have played 3 or even 4 at times. 
Cats had Hawkins, Esava and Menzel who plays like a tall.

Usually the third tall is more around the low to mid 190's and a mobile target with good defensive skills. 

It's the defensive skills that will undo our 3 tall set up. Especially given we don't have established smalls in that role. 4 tackles inside 50 was a poor result against the Saints.

Bugg and Garlett are rightfully out of the side due to lack of skill/lack of contest. Kent injured. ANB struggling. Spargo looks good but he's more suited as a half forward with some good pressure skills. Petracca has the agility to defend really well, time to show it. Hannan inconsistent in his pressure, as is Melksham, he's not a natural at it. 

The other weakness with our talls is none of the 3 seem suited as good inside 50 kicks. Jack Riewoldt, Hawkins and Walker are right up there with the best in the comp for kicking to a lead inside 50.

Three talls who can play multiple roles in multiple areas of the ground and who can rotate are potentially a nightmare for other defences.  The mismatches that three mobile talls can create mean that, for the first time in many seasons, opponents will have to possibly weaken their structures to try and counter ours.

Let them play together as many games as possible. As the late Dean Bailey once stated, to build a team they must play 50-70 games together. He was right - look at the rise of Geelong, Hawthorn and then Richmond that was built on many years playing together.

Sooner or later we have to take the plunge and prepare for the future. Go dees.

20 year old KPF whos now learning ruck at AFL level ....  a very tough gig at a very young age but hes getting there.

He was directly responsible for three straight goals in the 2nd half.. he kicked 2 in a row himself then handballed to Oliver for a goal.

We need to remind ourselves is only played 13 games and was always behind the 8ball when he started (coming off long term injury).

He has made solid progress this year and will be one of our most improved players by the end of this year. You can write that down Jimmy.

why is the convo weid for garlett? id have thought the missing piece is a fired up jeffy with fritsch taking anb's km clocking spot at high half fwd. I thought it was evident that ANB had no goalkicking nous yesterday and did not take his opportunities. I was wrong about Weid, he's developing nicely.

Ok I can agree he has improved 

showed a bit yesterday and while pedo is a bit heavier and hits packs harder Weideman has him covered in potential and youth. Don’t think he was best 22 at the start of this season but natural improvement will mean he will be at the end. Might be very important if we make September   Once again the FD and others on this site are smarter or have more footy nous than me.  So be it

Interested in hearing from the experts what is the Weid's role in a team including McDonald and Hogan.

Simply relieving in the ruck is not adequate and if it is we need to start ranking his hit out efficiency. Is he a decoy forward or a linkman perhaps?

This post is not meant to be a criticism of the Weid or for that matter a case for the inclusion of Pederson ( he would face the same problem of finding a defined role).

sort of, 12th man. carry the drinks...  while he learns the caper at AFL level.  To grow in confidence; and to compete and assist, whenever he can, is my guess.

 

I think he will go out of the team when Viney is ready, to resume.

Weide is a Mobile tall, who of our 3 talls, is ideal deep. and rucking.

With the possibility of both TMc and Hogan pushing high into the midfield to assist with transition, we have a mighty powerful Mid-Section on the way, for us.

 

The engines on both TMC and Hogan will leave opposition defenders breathless. Ideal for the high half-forward roles; IMO.

 

I think we have found a new midfield recruit, to cover wattshisface's role. jesse.

His best performance to date!!  Only a smidgen off the output of T-Mac.   Keep him in for the next three weeks at least.

His game on Sunday had to be a confidence builder.  Hopefully the next two also as well as building some decent AFL match fitness while honing his skill execution under heat.

Unless he has two shockers in the coming two rounds, he should also be allowed to go on the road against the Crows in 3 weeks to see whether he stands up against a genuine contender and great opportunity to get some further games experience under his belt.

Chopping and changing at this point is not justified on Sunday's performance and will only dent his confidence levels and the game against the Crows will provide a better understanding of where his game is at.
