Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Changes vs Gold Coast

They’ve been preparing Viney as well as McDonald for AFL, they’ve said it multiple times. Viney was running around weeks ago, would not be surprised to see him line v Gold Coast.

I agree they have been pushing this line but the narrative seems to have changed this week.

Reading between the lines, it seems he may be playing VFL this week.

Why anyone would want Viney to play in the VFL has got me stuffed when we are playing a VFL standard team in the Suns. The best of both worlds for Viney.

I think Melbourne are just playing games. Guns like Viney just don't play VFL footy, a complete waste of talent if he plays in the VFL IMO.

Fair call mate, think I'm just conditioned to expect the worst, you know, he comes straight in and picks up a new injury or is reinjured. Guess it could happen  playing VFL, can't see him taking it any easier at that level anyway.

The VFL is attractive simply because it offers the option of reducing the game time to say 60% while still offering match conditions.

As others have pointed out when you combine comeback pressure with travel etc and of course the weight of expectations it just makes sense to keep it low key.

We also need to consider whether his time on field etc and games played will need to be managed when he returns for say the first 6 weeks. (luckily there is a bye which could help in this regard.)

Gold Coast led by 17 points when the teams played in 2017 before Melbourne kicked 14 goals to six in the second half. Jeff Garlett starred with 24 disposals, eight marks and five goals.

This on top of his 5 against the Lions at the Gabba a few weeks back, means he should be seriously considered despite some poor form recently.

Vince deserves a rest after a hectic schedule and another short turnaround interstate.

For me it would be ANB and Vince out and Salem and Jeff in.

Save Viney for the G next week.

Werridee, the case for playing Viney in the VFL is that: 1) unlike TMac he hasn't done a full pre season 2) he's a mid fielder so any restriction on game time has an impact elsewhere; 3) if game time is to be restricted the VFL with 23 players a side is the better place to do it; 4) it avoids an interstate trip and the added complexities of a potentially warm and humid day in Brisbane that could possibly increase the fatigue levels and thus propensity for soft tissue injuries; 5) it allows the club to make just the one change to a winning side (assuming Salem gets up).

Not many valid reasons at all really.......

Viney coming back to AFL this week could only have 1 of 2 outcomes:

  1. He gets through the game unscathed but has an average output (sub 20 possession)
  2. He re-injures his foot or does some other type of injury

The whole reason there's a 3-4 game preseason is to get players used to match conditions and into form. One does not simply waltz into a side after a year off and have a blinder with 30+ disposals.

I think there is good reason to run Viney on limited minutes at Casey to get some match fitness.

Unlike Tommy, he hasn't played a competitive game since last season & may open himself up to soft tissue injury for example.

It's probably more likely we run him in at AFL level but there are good reasons why we might not despite the views expressed above.

why not play him as a fwd (replacing anb) on limited time (70%). depending on how he goes maybe a short stint on-ball.

vfl a waste, just as easy to injure yourself there, plus he might kill someone at that level

and box hill will probably target him for some rough treatment (not that he couldn't handle it but still a big risk). always some nuff nuff trying to make a name for himself.

Re Viney he hasn't played under match conditions since late last year. He may well be fit to play this weekend but I will bet London to a brick that he will be mighty sore and may not come up the week after. So play limited time in the seniors or slightly longer at Casey.? I would leave it to the List load manager Charlie Allen to decide. I suspect the club will be looking at the fixture and deciding which strategy best has Viney ready for the next month and the likes of the Crows and Collingwood

If I was a wagering person I would back Jack V for the VFL this week.

There will be so much pressure on the medicos that I suspect no one would give an unqualified opinion.

Play 3/4 in the VFL is my bet.

Wouldn't like to be the poor sod who's on the end of the first tackle he lays.

He is not a forward for one and ANB is covering more ground than any other player in our team.

If Viney tried to play this role first up, he would blow up.

I think Goodwin explains it pretty well...

...and let me add 'daisy' that there is less pressure in the VFL. Yes he can still get injured (lets hope he doesn't) but if he gets a bit sore they can put him away for the day. We can't afford that at AFL level.

He can get some touch and match fitness and be primed for the Blues.

apart from Oliver our mids are pretty small.  Viney and Salem back does not help this.  I'd like to see Tim Smith in there.  He is not only tall but strong and aggressive.  His 31 possession BOG in the last VFL game shows he can do it.  With Suns and Carlton coming up it would be an ideal time to try it.

This is terrible logic.  What about the time Jakovich kicked 13?  Bring him back, too!

the fact that he has had poor form recently has to be the main consideration, not an aside.  We should gift games to no one, ever.  Jeffy back in when he has earned it.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
