To any who were at the game, how much ruck work did he do and how did he go at it?  Does he look strong enough for ruck work at AFL level this year?

No,,, it would be a little bit like watts ; if we elevated him on one reasonable game.

Let him form a real foundation of top-form first. 

 

If he played and got burnt this week,,, it may have a very bad effect on the kid.

When he's put together a lot of games of topline footy, & in the ruck;  Maybe them will be the time... because if it goes sour, he has the memory banks full of proof that he's on the right pathway.

Your point DS is what I was trying to say... while the Weid was getting the goals it was not necessarily by imposing himself upon the other players. It was a good game but Coburg lacked big body tall players.

I noticed two Coburg players on Weid while he was in the forward line. They were both at least a head shorter than him.

Good game but like the Frankston practice game the week before it was a mismatch. (Remember that Frankston beat Coburg in a practice game.)

Must admit from my position behind the goals I cannot really comment on his round the ground ruck work but the sheer weight of numbers in the talls available to Casey certainly assisted that dominance.

The next three games are Werribee, Richmond and Geelong (followed by another ill timed bye before they play the Hawks.) Not suggesting we wait the full five weeks but one or two more would be advisable perhaps.

If you'd just commented on Pedersen's game in glowing terms I wouldn't have quoted you.  But at the same time you were complimenting Pedersen you took a swipe at Weideman when all and sundry had been glowing of his performance to that point in the game.  You mentioned Weideman's lack of physicality, or something similar.  It was clear you see the two vying for the same spot, as you'd been discussing it in another thread, and wanted to let your feelings be known as to who you'd prefer to take it.  Why you'd want to a failed 30 year old key forward to be given another go, especially ahead of a player who could be our future, is beyond me.

I reckon we are one tall down in the forward line. With Hogan running far and wide (and I see this as his role - he is a natural CHF rather than a stay at home FF) , I really see only two options to the second tall  - Pederson or the Weid. The Weid is the future and I can live with some inconsistency to get some more game time into him.

Tom MacDonald is the other Tall and one of the best contested marks we have Weideman may end up Full forward with Hogan running around like Reiwoldt did

He might be the temporary but I doubt he is the future. With Tom McDonald in he wouldn't even be on the selection radar.

Serious question, has he ever kicked a goal that isn't from a set shot or joe the goose? Needs to add some more strings to his bow.

given the weid comes on, i could see that tmac becomes a permanent swing man, playing back or forward depending how any game starts to play out. this would be cream for us

I suggest he might be on the radar with 5 goals on the weekend. Yes the opposition was poor but your still have to kick them. ( Hunt according to reports on here did not play well against the same poor opposition)

Did you watch the highlights? Pretty poor highlights by the MFC website as they didn't show how he got a number of his set shots.

Admittedly, I am not a big fan of Weideman, but I find it hard to get excited by the highlights of any player from that game. I would be a lot more interested in his pressure acts than 5 easy goals.

Hunt did the only thing that took my notice in the highlights (a great run down tackle), but he is in a big form slump.

I can live with young players showing inconsistency too but Sam can get game time, learn his craft (inc ruck work) and develop a tank down in Casey.

Unless the match committee believe Sam is ready to hold his own at AFL level he can continue to improve at the lower level.

If you weren't there I'd like to know how you know he kicked 5 "easy" goals.  You may be right, btw, but I also didn't see the game and haven't automatically drawn the same conclusion.  You may have information I'm not privy to.

As for his set shots ?  I too wish we saw how he got them.  He had 2 free kicks, but we don't know if they're from them.  He could have got them when he was rucking, or in the F50.  He also took 4 contested marks, which was the most taken by any player for the day, so they could have come from those, or they could have been from a mark on the lead.  He only took one uncontested mark for the day, so only one would have come from a lead - if at all.  Tim Smith took 3 contested marks, which was the second most on the ground.

I'm not so interested in his pressure acts.  I'll let the coaches worry or coach that side of things.  I'm interested in his size.  Is he noticeably bigger in person.  I believe he is.  How was he moving ?  Does he look more agile now his ankles are finally right ?  What was his speed like ?  How did he compete in the contest ?  Was he aggressive ?   

Those aspects interest me far more, because they'll tell me whether he has AFL attributes.  I didn't like the way he was moving last year.  If that's markedly better I'm excited for what lies ahead.

I was at the game. Weideman's goals were mostly all hard fought, including some contested marks, and were mainly all scored in the first half when Coburg were more competitive.  Hi s ruck work was good. Not to be critical, but if anybody scored 'easy goals' in the main it was most definitely  Balic.

I saw Balic run onto 3 open goals on the highlights so does he deserve a game in the seniors or should we remain unchanged?

I have not been a fan but he did all that was asked of him on Sunday. He spent more time up the ground in the second half so a bit hard to kick goals when you are contesting centre ball ups. Yes the opposition was ordinary but you can only beat the team on the day. I need to see similar against a better team but his first game of 2018 was easily the best I have seen from him.

Not yet but he was good don't can him because all you saw was 30 seconds of play. I have seldom see a better opening game by a recruit.

Not in my opinion. Let's see him against better opposition. Brayshaw and Hannan well ahead of him.

Maybe. But one of the reasons being put forward here for not promoting Weideman is that he had it easy on the weekend, so we can't really judge his form.

But if indeed he's finding it too easy at VFL level, then surely a) that's not going to help his development and b) by definition, he's earned the right to play at a higher level?

I dont believe in gifting games but until TMac gets back I think we are tall forward light. Therefore someone needs to play there.

To me the choice is three 

1/ Frost - he aint no forward

2/ Pedersen or Weid - we have seen what Pedo has to offer and he can be good  - he was underwhelming the first two games. We have seen Weid and he has shown the odd glimpse.

So for team structure we need either Pedo or Weid - since we have no Tmac i prefer to give the Weid a crack - if that is gifting games so be it. ( although his form in the two  the last two weeks, albeit against weak opposition has been good)

Vote 'apologies' to Brayshaw and Hannan.

Not in the votes but a good rap for Petty:  "who was among the best. Despite his stats reading just 12 disposals and three marks, Petty’s influence in marking contests and ability to read the ball in defence was elite. At just 18 years of age, Petty looked comfortable at VFL level and is certainly one to watch this season".

It is great to now have the 'luxury' of letting these talents develop at VFL before rushing them into the seniors.

Ok he seemed to be playing with purpose which I had not seen before. In the past he seemed to have no presence on the ground. Seemed to be keeping up  with the play, he does not have the speed of Baltic or Hannah but for KPF I don't expect him too. As I have said I could not fault his game on Sunday. He played the Ruckman / KPF well. He moves way faster than King who is IMO a tap Ruckman with nothing much else to offer.
