I have no idea why, in particular, Tyson and Brayshaw weren't playing this weekend.  Listening to Goodwin's post-game presser, Tyson had probably done enough work to be 100%, so clearly for Goody it was more about form.  Now, if Gus' non-inclusion was for the same reason, then I don't see how promoting two blokes that have form question marks above them, and that played no game this weekend at any level to work on their form, can be included.

If it's more about miles in legs, then I'm sure they could've worked on that this weekend to have them right for the Brisbane game.

But because I have no knowledge of this, there's no way I can make any changes, for changes sake.

Also, looking at your other selections, if we bring Frost in we're likely to be too big down back, Bugg, well, see my above comments about Tyson/Brayshaw.

Of your omissions, all of Harmes, Hannan and Wagner worked in to the game in the 2nd half, to the point that the former two were two of our better players I felt.  While Ablett got 39 touches, his 2nd half - which is when Maynard played tighter on him - was far less dominant than his 2nd quarter.

Jeffy always takes a couple of games to get his touch, and he's not a liability finding it in the seniors.

We lacked a bit of polish and a lot of composure going forward.  Making sweeping changes won't assist in this area, especially after round 1.

I don't expect you to agree with any of the above.

No way would I drop Wagner based on that game.  Far from our worst or most costly.

I didn't see anything from Hannan or Maynard during the preseason to think they were ready to be best 22 and yesterday confirmed it.

Nothing against Maynard, but there are clearly better options waiting in the wings. How Tyson and to a lesser extent Brayshaw failed to make the round 1 side is still head scratching.

I'm willing to stick with Hannan for one more game. He had an absolute shocker of a first half (did he even touch the ball?) but was involved in some important plays in the second. 

Depending on Brisbane's forward set-up, I'd also like to bring in Frost as an extra tall to free up Lever to intercept and spoil as a third man up. His one-on-one play is clearly a weakness in his game which Geelong clearly knew and exploited.

One more thing, the calls to drop Wagner are a bit premature. Watch the third quarter again. Wagner along with Harmes and Jones were among those who brought us back into the contest. Anyone who can lay a bone crunching tackle on Selwood is OK in my books.

Can't see many changes, although there is a strong case for five inclusions;

1) Angus Brayshaw - even though Goody didn't say so, I'm sure his wisdom teeth removal was a factor in his omission. His last quarter against the Saints pre-season was unbelievable and he has the ability to play pretty much anywhere. He has primarily been training with the midfield group and that's where he should play much of it.

2) Dom Tyson - overlooked for Maynard because he isn't noted for applying a hard tag. But our link play wasn't as good without him.

3) Tom Bugg - after a fantastic pre-season was left out as we opted for two fellow left-footers who are far more exciting - Hannan and Frita. Will Goody again opt for both livewires ahead of Bugg's tackling and niggle and stronger presence in the face of two-on-one situations?

4)  Sam Frost - yes we know his disposal can be a bit dodgy, but if we are going to go man-on-man - as we did in the first half against Cats - then we need pace down back for when they get through our press cleanly. Lewis' professional free (and resultant stupidity mouthing off) was a classic case of not enough genuine pace down back on the last line. But if we are playing a spare down back (like we did in the second half), then we don't need Frosty and it will be a low-scoring grind. Coaching choice.

5) Billy Stretch - beats me how we left out one of our best running linkmen after such a strong pre-season. If Salem has to miss (after effects of injury?), then Billy's the obvious inclusion to play the wide roll. And Billy's kicking now is elite on most occasions.

As I've said elsewhere we now have a squad of around 30 players who are all AFL-worthy. It's a question of which ones each week and I hope we rotate a few players in the first few weeks and particularly when we play Essendon on an Anzac Day-shortened break.

But my guess is that Goody will be stubborn like he was last year when he left Melky down back for six weeks and kept Weid in the side for the first four games. So I expect an unchanged line-up from him. But there are others on the selection panel and maybe he will listen to other ideas.

If you look at Garlett's form towards the end of last year and the game yesterday has done nothing for a while now. His 2 cameos a game are not good enough, an out for mine.

Spot on. I cannot remember one occasion where he was at the fall of the ball....but more frustrating was his lack of forward pressure and tackling and his fumbling. There was nothing clean about his performance.

I like Maynard - even have him in my supercoach side - but I would drop him back to the VFL. I think Maynard has a lot of scope for improvement, and could be a good midfielder, but he needs to sort out his timing. He needs to learn there is more than one speed. At times on Saturday he went in very hard, didn't slow down, and given away a silly free kick off of an overly aggressive tackle. It was silly. He needs to learn to tread water and go hard when its called for - like Oliver does. Usually it comes with experience, but he should be told this, and dropped back to the VFL to work on it. Viney used to have a similar problem. There are players who can help him.

The thing I don't understand is that I thought this year was not about development, it was about finals and going all out to win. 

Why then, did we play a 3rd gamer on Ablett? 

I don't have a problem trying kids and giving them a go, and thought Frisch was very good. But if you are serious about winning, you play Tyson or Brayshaw, hell you play Stretch before you play Maynard. This is not a knock on Maynard, who I think will be good, but not only is he a kid, he also doesn't have a footy background. You are asking a lot of him, and we needed to win this game!

We lost by 3 points, and I can't believe that there is a single person on here who doesn't think Tyson in  Maynard out doesn't give us that 3 point deficit back.

4 crucial premiership points down the drain. This will be another close season, and this loss may not be the difference between finals or no finals, but maybe it will be the difference between top 4 or a home final. If we've learnt anything from last year, is that we cannot blow opportunities like these!

If we don't come out and absolutely demolish Brisbane and North, then it shows me that we have not matured at all after last year's disgraceful effort!

I'm of the completely opposite view. I thought Lewis was much better as a defender when moved there from the wing. 

We only lost by three points, or one poor kick for goal, against a team that was in the final eight last year, so I think the wrist slashing on here is a bit over the top. Nevertheless, if changes will improve the side they should be made. I think one of Hannan and Fritsch might be dropped as they appear to play a similar role and neither impacted in games for long enough. I'd be inclined to keep Hannan even though I thought Fritsch was overall a better player, purely because I expect Hannan with an extra year's experience will recover more quickly. And it is easy to be hoodwinked by stats - Wagner was completely outplayed when it mattered.

So, I'd bring in Brayshaw and Tyson. Harmes to play more forward instead of Fritsch (or Hannan) and Brayshaw for Wagner, but with Lewis taking Wagner's spot in the backline and Brayshaw to the wing.

I focused on him too as I think he can play and have been surprised by the majority on here thinking he is so bad. 

I thought he played well and would be shocked if he was dropped this week. Tackled hard, crunched Selwood, won 3 free kicks, two at least from tackles and had the highest disposal efficiency of our defenders - for what that is worth. 

He wasn’t amazing or anything and had a couple of clangers like most did. 

Replacing him with frost or brayshaw would have not increased our chances of winning yesterday imo

The Game v Geelong

Our team is not a bad football unit and has come a very long way from the depths it plumbed 4 or 5 years ago.

That we were unable to do the business with Geelong, does not at all mean we are a poor outfit. It means we still have a lot of learning and development to do. Each loss is another lesson as to what it takes to be the best at this level, painful as that may be.

There would not be a person here that didn't want a win. However, many here could see the haphazard entries into the forward 50 became the root of our undoing, allowing easy and controlled entry into Geelong's forward 50, and goals to them, of course.

That we get a wake up call so early in the year, may be a blessing in disguise. Both some players and many posters here, saw the task as easier than it proved to be.  They cast Geelong as a shadow of its former self and that our "depth" would see us win comfortably.

The Game v Lions

We are now all on notice, there is no such thing as an easy AFL game. That will hopefully stand us in good stead for the game against the Lions this week.

We should have learned that body strength is something we lacked in every line and that the team selected was very one paced.

Ins for me are:- Tyson, Frost and Brayshaw.

Outs for me are:- Maynard, Wagner and Harmes.

We had way too many same sized same paced  half back flankers last week. We could have used an extra variant, a strong, fast, tall. Frosty can be that person but needs a lot of guidance to lower his eyes and not to take on more than he should. This would allow Lever to be an intercept player, not a 1 on 1 (a role not asked of him at the Crows). Wags improved from a terrible first half, but offers nothing that Jones, Vince, Lewis or Salo could do at half back. These 3 or 4 will be retained, so Wags gets it, although he was not our worst player, just a type that we have too many of.  There is competition for spots and tough calls to be made.

We were unable to make good use of Max's premier service to our mids. Young Maynard whilst a tough nut, butchered the ball and coughed it up to the opposition just too often. We cannot afford that. Tyson has questionable foot skills but better hands and a little more nouse. Maybe Corey's time will come, but not just yet.

The 3rd change would be either ANB or Harmes who play similar mid/high half forward roles.

I think ANB will hold his spot so Harmes makes way for Gus who can deliver the ball forward far more precisely and hit a leading target. We lacked precision (and leading targets) against the Cats and need to remedy that ASAP.

Without under estimating the Lions, adding some polish to the list will improve us from last week. Hopefully Goody can see it in his mind that we lacked versatility and a bit of experience.

They're trialling McStay forward, because they know they have no reliable key forwards.

I thought Salem after the first quarter was putrid. He gets shown up horribly as being slow in leg speed when 2 way running is required. 12 touches for a midfielder of his class is not good enough. I'd love to know how many of those 12 were in the first quarter?

I'm feeling confident for this week.  

In the final wash-up, we were 3 points down against a quality team.  If Gawn had of kicked that goal, no one would be writing off the Cats today.

I've already stated that I'd like to see Brayshaw and Tyson for Maynard and Wagner.
