Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

It's probably just me, but I thought Maynard was far from our worst player.  15 touches, 7 tackles, 5 clearances.  His disposal leaves a bit to be desired but the bloke has a dip.  There were plenty of others who had less influence on the game than him (ANB, Salem, Garlett, Hannan etc.)

He may get dropped, but I think the harsh criticism is a little unfair on a bloke playing just his second game of AFL footy and who was given the task of attempting to curb one of the best players of our generation.

A couple of really bad kicks under little pressure hurt a lot.

I find it difficult to call any changes off the back of the first game of the season. Sure there were a few questionable efforts and bad decisions but we played a pretty bloody good team in Geelong and fell agonisingly short after playing 3 good quarters of footy.

People calling for Garlett to be dropped after one game should smack themselves in the head. A bloke who is a 40+ goal small forward and who was in AA calculations last year was a bit off yesterday - the first game of the year.

Maynards endeavour was great and for a bloke who was playing his second game of AFL level footy I thought he wasn’t too bad. That said, we need Brayshaw on the field for his footy intellect.

Also need more ball-winners on the park so Hannan makes way for Tyson who can snag a goal or two.

Out: Maynard, Hannan

In: Brayshaw, Tyson

Vince may miss a few games because of his hand? I know he played the rest of the game, but if it's a split webbing between his thumb and forefinger, he might be out for 3-4 weeks.

I believe Vince came into the game with the split webbing. The stitches tore off early in the game and he went down the race for repairs.

He’s a tough cookie our Bernie, loved his second half.

Mono got in before me but I too cannot for the life of me see ANB as an AFL standard footballer. Headless chook most of the time. Harmes is not much better. He reminds me of the kid in the backyard wanting every mark to be a speccy and having to blind turn half a dozen opponents before kicking the ball. Big tickets on himself and needs an ability reality check.

To suggest dropping Garlett is crazy. He can change the fortunes of a game in one quarter. He is our X factor. I actually thought Wagner and Maynard not too bad.

They killed us on the rebound from deep in their defence. We were very slow getting back to support the defenders. I lost count of how many times they ran it up the ground via players who seemingly didn’t have an opponent. Yeah, yeah...I know about the press and how teams get opened up on the rebound but how many times does it need to happen in one game before Plan B is initiated?

A few comments on changes:

Brayshaw will be a definite in if his wisdom teeth extraction is all healed.

If you we dropping players for first half failures then Jones would be on the block.  Noticeable poor disposals early. (But he won't be)

Kick in the pants for Lewis and his lack of discipline.  He stopped being a liability when we went for a loose man behind the ball.  Dont think he will be dropped, though.

We should consider Frost if we need another tall defender - we do NOT want to have Lever playing 1:1 with a tall forward.  Lever also needs to settle with his exit kicks - banging the ball out to a 3:1 on the wing, then having it come straight back in for a goal is not a good look.

Salem looked really good until he was smashed.  Should have been taken off and a North Melbourne style medical report prepared for the coroner.

Thought Maynard did OK.  Hannan was quiet, but is an excellent kick at goal.

In summary:  Brayshaw in, Frost in (if needed), Tyson a maybe.  Bugg would also be close (for Hannan?).

Potential outs:  Lets see how they pulled up.  Not sure we will chop and change for the sake of it - I think Goodie likes to give them a run at it.

OUT:
Maynard: Was out of his depth and unsure if he was tagging or what but 39 each to Gaz and Selwood would suggest he didn't
Wagner: Slow, weak, not particularly smart, won't be here next year.
Garlett: Lack of forward pressure and needs to be sent a message.

IN:
Tyson: (Maynard) Hs is a ball magnet and I have no idea why wasn't selected (Seems like a personal issue with Goodwin)
Brayshaw: (Wagner) Steadfast and tenacious off HB, tough as nails and can always drift forward for a goal (Why wasn't he selected either??? another coach issue?)
Bugg: (Garlett) Stick with me here, If you look at Buggs scoring shots per game he is up there with the best small forwards in the comp (Betts, Greene, etc., his forward pressure, speed and tackling are severely underrated and if he could just convert a little more would seriously be considered one of the best small forwards in the comp.

As always, happy to be proven wrong by performance and if you all think I am wrong please let me know!

One of the best things the Saints did was to completely tag Zorko out of the game, so if we get rid of Maynard then we need to either make Vince a full time tagger, or bring in Bugg to play that role.

For mine I'd drop Maynard and bring in Brayshaw, to cover for Vince in the back half and also Lewis's midfield time and ensure he plays back all game.

I'd also play Tyson in place of Hannan and make Melky start of the back of the square at center bounces then up forward for the rest of the game, he got lost in between yesterday, but was very damaging pre-season as a near pure forward.

Probably wrong thread, but Tyson was one of the players who was most vocal in getting the training camp cancelled. he wasn't selected first round. The other player who was vocal was TMac, and he was demoted from the leadership group. Maybe I'm reading too much into it.

When are we all going to realise that Salem is overrated as [censored]? Goes missing so often

I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt considering he was absolutely smashed by Selwood in the second quarter. Clearly wasn't 100% afterwards

Yes Wags got better, but that first half... my god. Gave up the ball twice which resulted in 2 direct goals and looked flat footed.

Maynard got toweled up. Poor skills as well. Shows the difference between VFL -> AFL.

Jeffy and Hannan were passengers for 3/4 of the game. Pretty much unsighted.

Out Maynard, Wagner, Hannan/Garlett

In Tyson, Frosty, Bugg

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

    HIBERNATING by KC from Casey

When they locked up the rooms for summer at the end of last year’s football season, the rooms gathered cobwebs, the atmosphere became dense and the place developed a sleepy feel. They opened up the rooms to let Casey out to play on Sunday but the team was still hibernating and they missed the bulk of the opening quarter. A FORK IN THE HAWK by George on the Outer

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side. But Melbourne’s empahtic 55-point win at the MCG on Saturday has truly put a fork in the Hawk and turned that history well and truly on its head. The Demons have now won nine of their last ten encounters with the other result, a draw.     And like a fork, it was the multi-pronged options that Melbourne had all across the ground.  It certainly helped that Hawthorn
