Viney’s foot is worse than we think

Anyone with any info on his foot? Could he miss the rest of 2018 if he can’t get it right by round 3 or 4? Hope not I feel 2018 in jeopardy?

They are just being cautious after they (Viney, coaching staff, medical staff) rushed him back too soon.  No need to put his season in jeopardy by doing it again.  An almost certain starter for Casey this weekend.

Absolutely it is.

I’ll cop crap for this no doubt, but from what I’ve heard there’s actual three to four different injuries in the foot itself. Essentially, the foot is rooted.

In all seriousness, I think they have just been overly cautious with it after what happened at the end of last season.  We can manage without him for a few weeks.

I’m with you. He should be rested for some time, as you’ve said there are multiple issues that are not resolved. 

It’s been 6 months to get to this point and he’s only a couple of weeks away, after a set back... it would be surprising if he is back in the next 4 weeks.

I could believe that if the original timeline was adhered to and Viney was ready for round 1 but that’s not the case. Match fitness? Never bought that one either.

I think it’s abundantly clear now that the loading of his foot in this final period (the match-fitness phase) has not had the desired result and further aggravated these other areas.

Load Bearing bone injuries

The PSI (pounds per square inch) on foot bones is an incredible stress that the foot is built to take, but after injury healing can be so hard. 

This does not look good...remember how long Hird took to return, and he was on juice ? back then

I think thats why he sourced out the juice, outa desperation to get that injury right.

I remember feeling so sorry for him back then as he had so many setbacks with it.

He was a hero to me in those days. but he turned to the dark side. 

Trying to self heal is creativity. But greed to get advantage by crookery, is just [censored]-weak.

I think he carried a plantar fascia injury for a long time. Not unusual for an AFL player but certainly that alone would've taken some toll on his body even pre surgery. Then there were rumours of a toe injury before what became (or always was) a stress fractured metatarsal.

Not an expert by any means but I can imagine that after the period of time off weight bearing they had to then make sure that not only was his metatarsal ok but that his plantar fascia had healed. Then there's the impact on ramping up training on the rest of his legs - soft tissues, knee etc.

I'm willing to believe the club when they say that as of Monday there wasn't any set backs with the foot injury/injuries but some associated niggles to carefully monitor. I'm also thinking those associated niggles can carry on for a fair while yet.

In Hird's defense, you can take as many drugs if you want but if the bones are rooter, they're rooted. He came back and was much the same player. We ruined Trengove, but that's not say we'll make the same mistake with Viney. If he needs to sit out 2-3 months, so be it.

Kept on running with that plantar-fascia injury, would heap stresses on other areas of the foot & legs.

No doubt he created other sore spots under that loading in that period, prior to the surgery to release the tendon, then cam back too soon, as well.

 

I sincerely hope this is not turning out to be desaster.

I just worry that the game against PA when Jack exploded out of the blocks for at least the first half, he hasn’t done serious damage. 

He would have been on pain killers that day. 2 weeks is not long

I thought Viney was sublime in and under, but I felt his range kicking and accuracy was limited (I know I’ll get roasted for this comment), to the point where Oliver could probably feed the ball better - either by hand or foot (when he actually does kick). 

I’d rather us consider our list assuming Viney won’t return until mid-season at the earliest. Even still, I believe we can achieve better than last year given the gradual - but explicit - rise in experience that we’ll have across the field.

I say go TV-junior, rest up and fully recover, and inject yourself as soon as you truly can!

But Melbourne fans, be prepared for the worst, as everyone responds differently to rehab/loadings on a return, and we just don’t know how it will go.

Whilst we all love Jack, we really do have some quality depth, and I’m convinced we defeat any team without him.

"Viney, who is targeting a return in round three – most likely via the VFL – still appears restricted in his movements and received treatment from the doctor at one stage. Viney did what he needed to do but left the track early, and the Demons will be cautious with his recovery after an interrupted pre-season."

Still receiving treatment from the doctor - definitely not a good sign...

I understand why people would immediately answer the OP with a resounding "no", given there's no evidence to suggest anything other than a Round 3-4 return.

However, would it really be that surprising if the injury was actually worse than that, or that his recovery has been worse/slower than usual?

It's probably just good old fashioned MFCSS, but I wouldn't be surprised, at all, if Viney's return is a matter of months, not weeks, away.
