Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Was hoping we avoided the Watts/Fritsch chat. Can we call it a day on that one now? With the vagaries of the draft it's more a coincidence than an intended move I'd imagine.

As for young Bayley - has a nose for a goal, lovely kick, competitive overhead.

He'll need to have convinced the coaches his defensive work is up to scratch to get picked for round 1. I hope he has.

Hope BF has the intensity and competitiveness around the ball. Not only to get the bloody thing but also to tackle like a demon. Not run sideways watching the play. if you know what I mean.

Heh, good luck with that.  They will be compared for as long as either one is still playing AFL.

I haven't seen any tentativeness to get the ball or lay a tackle but at the same time that kind of stuff isn't only natural ability but it takes training and team work as well as the right mindset. It's certainly going to make selection difficult and it will be interesting to see how the forward pressure works in round 1.

Apparently Gold Coast's small forwards have a club where the player who gets the least tackles buys breakfast or coffees or some such thing. I'd steal that idea for sure!

You won't have to worry.  Gawn highlighted in his commentary on AFLX how good and competitive he was in "one on one contests".  It was the first thing he highlighted about him and needless to he wouldn't say it if it wasn't true.

And you would have already noticed his courage in the air at Casey and JLT games.

Will he play round 1? I love the kids courage.

I love his marking ability, his leap, his speed, his laser kick, his cat like reflexes , his goal sense, his balance and his ability at ground level. I also love his courage.

I love the kid.

It's no mystery. The club didn't want Watts. They took what they could.

Don't beat yourself up. Players come and go all the time. We have 5 players playing from rd 1 2014 in our best 22..

It is nobody's fault other than Watts.

Probably the sticking point for me is this: How was all this broached? Was there an ultimatum? What is the real truth?

Believe it or not, I have moved on, but I can still reflect and think about JW fondly

Looking forward to watching the grace and footy smarts of Bayley carve up the opposition with that deadly left foot of his!

Any player who gives us a moment like this, is immortally loved...

Ps Bayley should be a ripper too...

Two posts use the same word, "courage" that's reassuring.

Think it is Fritta. Same as what the lads from Coldstream call him. Just as an aside, his father's nickname is the General. One of the toughest blokes you would ever come across. Despite the small frame Bayley won't be a shrinking violet.

People have mentioned this but he actually looks quite strong through the legs/hips. That's where his balance and kicking power are coming from.

Looks class...

Fritsch<>Brad Green

- both left footers

- both strong overhead

- both mercurial around goals

- both have meticulously groomed hair

Luckily for Carlton, they'll never have to experience another 5 goal second half qualifying final from a first year player again

On the contrary, I think it's about time people saw the Watts trade in a wider context. The cringey persistent lamentations over the Watts trade (on another forum) have been met with a stern response from me about look at what we got in return and giving Fritsch a chance over the next few years, to actually judge the second round pick trade. Which i don't think was a mere coincidence personally. Having said that, none of the burden of having to live up to another players potential, should ever be placed on his shoulders. He only has the burden of living up to pick 31.

That was a magnificent goal by Jack. I was there. But don't forget it was a team effort: Hibberd punched the ball to the ground, Oscar kicked it to Harmes who ran and kicked a beautiful pass to Jack.

Don't forget too that it was his finest moment. As much as I wanted him to stay, I now accept that there were not many moments like this. (as good as it was).

I expect there was an ultimatum...after repeated warnings, threats, cajoling and persuasions. It's just that the club very carefully kept all such messages in house.

Heard recently that Todd tried to get rid of Watts over 3 or 4 years finally suceeded. Was there a personal problem?

Maybe Todd thought him a little on the soft side.

Todd has some personal non-negotiables about player habits and work ethic. He wasn't enamoured with Stef Martin a few years back. Watts would have frustrated the daylights out of Viney.

FFS Jack was told on many occasions what was expected of him. He failed to adhere to the standards of training, playing and rehab that the club wanted.

He drop himself for one game you will recall. Unheard of. He was also dropped after he had played 150 games. Where else does that happen to a player in the prime of his career?

If you have players that won't play the way the club/coach want you to don't act surprised when they are booted out. You can never say the club didn't try to get the best out of Jack.

Get over it move on.

And you can add that every time Watts played poorly or was dropped it caused a media circus. That distraction has been removed. Imagine what it would have been like if Watts ended up playing much of this year at Casey?

Agree.

Also, there was so much negativity around MFC and JW, and every season it became an issue.

Almost like a curse. talked about by media, fans and no doubt players.  When coaches and the club would prefer to focus on the positives and the team. It was an emphasis on the individual rather than the team. It was like this before Dusty turned the corner, although it was his off-field stuff rather than his on-field performance. The Tigers were successful last year in eliminating all the bad news story and concentrating on the team and on-field success.

I am sure that Roos and then Goodwin became sick of the questions and the distraction. There was every chance that the distraction would have continued in 2018.

Now that the dust has settled, I have no doubt that the JW decision was right.

It was a goal that was important rather than special.

Sure it was a pressure kick and he worked hard to get out the back.  It was however an uncontested possession and a stroll in to 30m.

It was overplayed because of the whole Collingwood first game he had and coming full circle or something. Just another meme for the year.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
