Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I hate to break it to you but I'll be at the game too (without my equipment). Although I could stream live from my phone but I'd be too nervous. Perhaps I'll do the last quarter when we're 48 points up at 3/4 quarter time. Oops we've blown lead like that in the past.

We would get our own box and demand AFL press status.

Went to a club lunch today and Jake Lever was one of the guests from the club, he was interviewed by Robbo and he is absolutely stoked to be a Demon. Toddy and Jason Taylor were in touch with him constantly in his draft year and as we all know we would have drafted him but just didn't have the pick to do so.

He loves the club, the playing group and the coaches, he said they are a really tight knit bunch of guys and friends who want to win a flag (or two).

He said he was really impressed with the intensity of the playing group last year and this year it has lifted a notch, he said training has been great. He is a really impressive person, vey level headed and really keen for success.

Toddy was asked about AVB and said he's running at 100% on the special treadmill and will play football this year, maybe not till mid year though. There is a rumour about TommyMc but he said he thinks he'll play first round, hmmm! Jake said he's happy Tommy is playing forward because he gets a bit grumpy down back.

The club are exploring several options for a new facility but nothing to announce at the moment.

Not sure if this has been written elsewhere but I read a line that warmed the heart re Roos.

"This is my fourth year back in Melbourne, I grew up in Melbourne, I barrack for Melbourne, go to Melbourne games with a Melbourne scarf on when I’m not working....."

Paul Roos turned our club around in his three years, from a permanent cellar dweller to a side that can realistically challenge for the flag, he will be a big part of our history in years to come.and that's why i trust his judgement in picking Goodwin as his successor.

He cut most of the players on the list and eradicated the poor attitude that permeated through the club, from one generation of players to the next, we now have something that resembles a side capable of beating any other club in the competition

What an unlikely duo to have played such a big part in our resurgence, PJ and Roos, both should have a special place in the hearts of Melbourne supporters..

I like that Roosy identifies as a Melbourne supporter still. I heard him say it to Iron Mike and he still says it.

I assume when his 'boys' pass through the club, he will go back to being a Swan and I wouldn't begrudge him that.

Sheedy was asked what club he supported the most. He said he supported Richmond, Essendon and GWS. They said he surely must support Essendon the most, but he said that wasn’t true. It’s like having children. You love them all equally.

Barass has been different on that score.

While he has said that he has a soft spot for Sydney, North and Carlton, he had been strong that he is a Melbourne person at heart.

I guess in his case, he owes the club a lot as they not only gave him a playing career but helped raise him as a Legacy child and also financially supported his Mum. That's probably why he considers himself a Demon at heart.

I love Paul Roos.

The turnaround he pulled off is genuinely impressive.

This club was on its knees. It was last breath territory.

I regard him as one of the most important figures in this club’s history.

If we win a flag in the next five or so years, he is immortal.

Agreed. And I put PJ in exactly the same box from an administrative level.

As has been mentioned before there are some parallels between Roos’ tenure at Melbourne and Barassi’s back in the early 80’s.

In the years prior to Barassi taking the coaching reins we finished - 2nd last, last, 2nd last and 3rd last

In the years prior to Roos taking over we finished - last, last, 5th last, 5th last, 3rd last and 2nd last.

Barassi hands over a young, developing side to Northey that includes some experienced players; Brian Wilson, Alan Johnson and Robbie and some exciting youngsters; Gary Lyon, Sean Wight, Sugar Healey, Graham Yeats, Steve Stretch, Rod Grinter and Brett Lovett. Northey then adds up Todd Viney, Jim Stynes, Glenn Lovett and the Febeys to the 1987 list.

Roos hands over a young, developing side to Goodwin that includes some experienced players; Nev Jetta, Tom McDonald, Max Gawn and Nathan Jones and some exciting youngsters; Christian Petracca and Salem, Angus Brayshaw, Jayden Hunt, Jesse Hogan and Clayton Oliver. Goodwin has since added proven players in Michael Hiiberd and Jake Lever whilst there are high hopes for Bailey Fritsch, Oskar Baker and Charlie Spargo.

Northey in his second year (1987, easily my favourite Melbourne supporting year) erases the disappointment of years past and takes us not only our first finals appearance in 23 seasons but also to a Preliminary Final (with the ‘only could happen to Melbourne’ finish). We have a final series mortgage for the next five years including a Grand Final.

Goodwin in his second year.........

If Goodwin can takes us to finals and then a Premiership (hopefully a couple of times) then Roos’ considerable legacy will be further enhanced. Paul was only with us for three years whilst Barassi had five. Barass also didn’t have compete with AFL funded expansion clubs and we were far closer to the final abyss in 2013 than we were in 1981. For us to be now talking finals and premierships after the position we were in a few short years ago is remarkable.

I think one reason that Paul remains welded onto the Melbourne cause is that, success or failure, over the next few years will affect his historical standing in the AFL community. Along with PJ he has already saved this footy club and given it relevancy and a degree of respect. We will now see if Goodwin can now finish the job..

@fndee

Barassi actually did the rescue mission twice before Roosy did it at Melbourne.

Not only did he do it with us, he did it with Sydney. Both clubs were essentially lost causes albeit for different reasons (Sydney had become a millionaire's plaything while we remained an amateur club still living in the 50's).

Barass realized that to win a premiership, you need good players. These were not to be found at either club let alone anything resembling a decent footy culture so he realized that it would have to be a complete reconstruction of the place.

Like Roosy, he knew he could only stay a few years because of he stayed any longer, the knives would be out. That kind of pressure could have caused expectations to have been artificially warped which would have wrecked the growth trajectory of the group.

Like Barass, Roosy's body of work will be judged by his successor. On that note, you are spot on. RDB's successors bore fruit. I think we will start to see if Roosy's will follow a similar path this year.

I always enjoy a laugh if it was good for the football club I would be interested. It also would not be out of the question to find some funding again if it was good for the MFC - but I would do nothing without MFC approval. If it was deemed/ seen as a business I would also want 100% of the profits donated to the MFC.

But in short I’m always happy to assist the MFC in a positive way.

Sheedy is a very interesting character when he had his second stint at the Tigers. He is a wealth of knowledge and as passionate a Tiger as I have ever seen.  Black & Yellow runs thru his veins. He may have supported the other clubs but that may be due to many reasons.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
