Blight thinks Dees will struggle to make the Eight.

Recommended Posts

People, we'r talking about Flighty Blighty here, he works balls to the wall on whatever floats his boat at any given time, had some huge successes and failures based on that, logic & reason be damned...... his MFC 2018 comments here will fall into the failure category ?

Personally I love that he said that. The last thing we need it too much hype. We're still going to be underdogs in big games this year and Im happy with that. if the dees are going to be anything this year its going to come with the intensity of application accross the board. Something that I genuinely think Goodie will bring out in them. And hopefully we'll be able to shove it up Blighty at the end of the year. A way better player and coach than he is a footy commentator I have to say.

Out of the 2, I feel confident which one is more likely to put the fire in the belly and I already think the steely resolve is already evident when you see them train. The other thing I'm starting to see is "Team first" and a desire to help and support that I haven't seen before. Belief is a wonderful thing and I think after the R23 loss they went away and said "that's not us"  as opposed to all and sundry who continue to doubt. That #log Robbo is a great case in point " I can't trust them" he says. Who cares, they only need to trust and support each other and it's these aspects I'm seeing more and more of.

Nailed it mate!

This is our season to lose and ours alone, we are in the driving seat, and as we head towards round one (Fl)-obbo and his mates will look quite silly.

Well what a wide sweeping statement without the appropriate research, thought Blight was better than that.

1993 Flag Essendon : 7 with 100 games, 7 with more than 50 games, 6 with less than 50 games (total 20 players)

1997 Flag Adelaide : 5 with 100 games, 9 with more than 50 games, 7 with less than 50 games (total 21 players)

1998 Flag Adelaide : 8 with 100 games, 7 with more than 50 games, 7 with less than 50 games (total 22 players)

2008 Flag Hawthorn : 9 with 100 games, 10 with more than 50 games, 3 with less than 50 games (total 22 players)

2016 Flag Bulldogs : 6 with 100 games, 7 with more than 50 games, 9 with less than 50 games (total 22 players)

2017 Flag Richmond : 11 with 100 games, 4 with more than 50 games, 7 with less than 50 games (total 22 players)

2018 Demons at end of home & away : 8 with 100 games, 12 with more than 50 games, 2 with less than 50 games (total 22 players)

Difficult to really make a valued argument that the Dees wont have the experience to make finals on the above comparisons.

Lol, so Blight's own 1997 team had less experience?

He lost it a long time ago. What a muppet. Thank goodness we don't have to listen to his inane commentary on tv anymore.

The problem with this is that it not only proves Blight wrong, but it also sets a very high ceiling for Melbourne seeing as we are more experienced than most of those teams, and having more upside and promise going into 2018 than those teams did in their premiership winning year (aside from maybe Hawthorn who looked destined for greatness).

Blight may be wrong but the effort to prove as much has only opened Pandora's Box: there's no excuse this year.

If you look at most experts opinions on us 90% are sitting on the fence no one has the balls to back us in, but that’s ok it’s how I like it

That's what the team has earned with so many failures.  They haven't earned any faith yet.

mentioned a grand total of 2 players.

Lever in - Watts out, then spends 2 minutes taking about how we cant challenge because of a "statistic"

Would have been safer to make mention of our mental fragility, or how vulnerable we are to injury (heavy burden on Max etc)

Possibly the most boring and pointless prediction ever given.

I heard Cornes refer to David Warner as “an exemplary example” when listening yesterday.

I immediately turned the radio off.

Classic. Is his personal guarantee ("you won't") supposed to be given more or less credit than a supposed fact ("you can't")?

Why get so frazzled at one person's prognostication? At the end of the season, he'll either be right or wrong.

Not wanting to appear obtuse but if Melbourne missed out on the finals by a bees dick last year with 8 players who had played 100 games, why didn't Hawthorn with 17 such players, play in the finals?

I don't know where we will finish but I think player experience is important - not just # of games played but Finals experience!

I can think of only one club that has got to the Prelim (Port) or the GF this century without some finals games behind it.  Yes, even the surprise packets of Hawthorn (2008), Bulldogs (2016) and Tigers (2017) had had some finals experience (with mixed results).  The finals wins and the losses were invaluable for their coach and their leaders to build on.

I think we will make finals but not sure how far we can go this year because the lack of finals in our players, coaches and the club will shorten the odds considerably.  Hopefully, Macca, Lever and Lewis' experience will go a long way to help once we get there.

Note:  With natural growth in developing players, the proverbial 'drover's dog' should get us into the finals - if the players want it badly enough.

Malcolm Blight - is not the messiah he is a very naughty boy!!!!

Mal Blight was a thinker. He has always remained in my best 6 players, from memory, and that was headed by Robbie Flower. Blight did some terrific things but often overthought these requirements. He seems somewhat removed from current day practices and thoughts on the game; this recent statement is evidence, to me,  of this deterioration. Last year indicated that our end-of-season losses could be interpreted as the fuel to fire his angst. Maybe he is as affected by these losses as were the MFC players and supporters. I do, however, think that assessment is less relevant for the 2018 season. Melbourne will not struggle to make the final 8 and in so doing, will lay a pathway of learning across its player group that will propel success for the coming season. If only now was the time for Barassi to take over the coaching role and its supervision and intent, but it is not. So our coaching teams need to instil great things to new heights throughout the Club. We may just have a flag in our hands if this occurs because the talent and depth is there.

Matthew Lloyd has also provided some insightful commentary on us, via 3AW with Gerard Healy and Dwayne Russell.

"Melbourne won't play finals, Gerard. You just can't trust them" - Matthew Lloyd, Monday Feb 19 (before JLT 1)

"I tell you who's a real smokey for top 4, Gerard. It's Melbourne" - Matthew Lloyd, Monday Feb 26 (after JLT 1)

Now listen. Logic has no place in this. It's as foreign to footy as reasonably-priced food.

My God it all becomes so laughable at this end of the season. Teams are burning down  houses, training out of their skins and Media folk are exercising wrists over-time !!

I honestly don't listen to any of the shows or read much of the absolute bullshlt offered  up as "insight"

These illustrious  minds that are paid to produce clickbait and headlines  are doing just that and no more. Why anyone pays the smallest skerrick  of weight on any of it beggars belief. The JLT series is a full flight training run..that's its and that's all.  Coaches get to see in real time against real opponents ( not your sisters )  how game plans and players are working out.

THEN.....

The real footy starts. Then we get to see who's come to the party ...and in what manner.  In this vein come the final siren at the MCG on Mar 25 we will have some idea of what we're about and where we might be going  (or not ).

As others have already shown much of this ratbag lot of wannabe scions of secret knowledge are in fact just guessing. They're applying whatever they deem fit as a template and cast their runes accordingly. They will hunt with hounds and run with hares.

There are only about 25 odd to whom I nod any sense of idea about who we are and how we're going and they oddly enough are the ones wearing those red and blue jumpers on game day. The only Stat that really impacts ANYTHING  is the scoreboard.  In this light I will continue my time honed practice  of paying attention to ONLY these two parameters...an no more.

Nothing said or offered other than by the team on game day matters a zac.
