McKenna was mentioned as the forgotten man because he was not included on the list despite being injured (again).

As such he is not back in full training. The track watchers might be able to give a better update on where is he at.

His best go is in the backline. But Oscar has had an enormous summer and is looking solid. I wouldn’t be surprised if Frost missed against St Kilda either, unless we were to rest Oscar/Lever.

It's as much structural.

They obviously want 2 talls and 4 small/mediums.  And Hibberd plays pretty tall and intercept marks well also.

I think the upside of someone like Frost is huge. if he's not in the starting 22 ( and I dont think atm he is)  then, imho,  he'll be a quality replacement. We bat deep this year...as deep as I can remember for years.

With their injury histories VDB and McKenna will be under the pump if they can’t get on the park early in the season. The way the game is played these days, players need a strong fitness base if they’re going to perform well. I wish them luck but things aren’t looking good for them.

It’s a contributing factor, sure. But it’s only structural now that we have Lever at the club. And that trade in itself said a lot about how the coaches viewed a backline of Oscar and Frost in tandem as talls.

His footy fundamentals have never been up to scratch and he’s been trialled in almost every position, failing to lock down any of them. 

I was baiting supporters who loosely throw around the term ‘gun’. Which is an annoyance.

I expect Lever to be the best recruit in my time following Melbourne.  The difference he makes to our defensive structures is enormous.  I'm of the view that teams don't win flags (there may be a rare exception) without at least one elite defender.  We haven't had an elite defender at the club in my footy lifetime (circa 1970).

The opportunity to secure a 22 year old soon to be elite defender (if not already) is profound.  In part due to our present weaknesses in defence and in part because the opportunity itself is so rarely presented.  How often does a talent of Lever's ilk (at 22) fall into club's laps ?

Our list is the best I've seen at Melbourne.  It's better balanced than any we've had previously.  If it doesn't secure at least one flag in the next 5 years I'll be amazed and dismayed.

I agree.

And I’m happy that Frost and Oscar will be battling for that second tall position. It will make them better players individually and will hold them to higher accountability on game day. All of it being a positive for the club. 

We’ve also got the best crop of 21-23 year olds in the comp and it sound as if they want to stay together given their love for one another. That’s what excites me most about our future. They’re all super close.

Jordan Lewis will miss Thursday’s night clash with St Kilda at Casey Fields as he battles a calf issue. The former Hawk suffered a minor strain in his team’s first JLT clash over North Melbourne.

“Scans have shown a minor strain and at this stage we won’t take any risks during this period and he won’t play JLT two,” Demons footy boss Josh Mahoney said. “But we’re confident he’ll be available for round one, as he’s done a full pre-season, has got a lot of confidence in his legs and he’s an experienced player.”

The Dees are hopeful Jack Viney will be fit to face the Cats in Round 1, while Dom Tyson will be assessed before the club decides whether he’ll play the Saints.

St Kida faces Melbourne at Casey Fields and Alan Richardson’s team will hope to hit back after an ordinary first-up outing against Carlton.

Jarryn Geary sat out much of his side’s loss to the Blues on Wednesday night, but there weren’t any other concerns for the Saints. Just three first-choice St Kilda players weren’t available for the Blues clash. Nathan Freeman’s latest hamstring setback will see him put on ice for some time.

Paddy McCartin and David Armitage made impressive returns to footy at Ikon Park last week, while top draft picks Hunter Clark and Nick Coffield also impressed coach Alan Richardson.

However, mature-aged rookie Stewart Crameri is a chance to play his former club, and Brandan Parfitt is also in the mix.

I'd reckon you were correct, Wells 11 (great jumper for the centreman). Frost's game dropped a few clangers but I'd reckon that he is so adaptable that now, most of these would be rare. He should IMO be in that magical '22' and several supporters and members that I have spoken to have raised that point to the extent that he would be their favoured CHB or even Fullback with the current personal down that end. If not, yep, he would be a very high quality replacement and even so 'off the bench'. Depth is pretty wonderful, heh? In the DL piccies of players, there is one of Frosty lifting a weight in training - just a chest, arms and head shot - this photo is intimidating as I cannot think of one AFL player who would not be confronted by landing him as a tall opponent with leg speed and attitude.

Some good points PD. Agree on the importance of an elite defender and Lever is not far away from being a true A grader. He has huge upside because i suspect he will push himself to improve throughout his career. A great get. 

I have been a huge dees fan since the mid seventies and agree that this is the best in my time. In addition to an elite defender to have chance of winning a flag in the modern era teams need 10-12 decent players capable of playing in he middle and at least 2 of them have to legitimate A graders. We have never had that in the time i have supported the dees. Wes till don't quite yet but Oliver and trac will get there and Viney gives so much of himself he almost gets in that group by dint of effort. Add gawn and we have the makings of a premiership midfield. 

The other piece of the puzzle is Hogan. I find it amazing that he seems to have dropped a little in the collective imagination. he is a star, pure and simple and the best forward we have had since Ox fist few years. 

Interesting comment that we have not had an elite defender since the 70s. I disagree, though acknowledge it is debatable. I think Gary Hardeman was elite. Steven Icke was probably not in that top class by the time he came to the dees (as a forward) but he was terrific at the dees. And Sean Wight and Danny Hughes, if not elite were not too far off it.

so thinking positively for round 1, if we get no more injuries, it could be down to just AVB and Smith?

I haven't heard anything worrying about Jeffy so I assume he will be right?

According to the brief training report from DeeSpencer in the Training Thread Jetta, Lewis, Neal-Bullen, Vanders and McKenna didn't train. Harmes was doing kicking and laps away from the main group.

Most likely none of them will play in JLT 2. Watch this space for Round 1.
