Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

If you are a Telstra Mobile customer it is free. Just need to login I think. Not sure if not a Telstra customer.

Just a reminder that there is not to be talk about illegal ways to watch/stream AFL games. Thank you.

I can understand why you removed that post (and the less the AFL sees the better as the poster feared), but I don't believe there was anything illegal in what the poster suggested.  Possibly is illegal in China, but not here (yet).

The poster described a method of how you can illegally use an AFL product meant for those living overseas whilst still being in Australia. I would prefer not to incur the wrath of the AFL.

Fair enough.  And I would prefer the AFL to be as ignorant as possible of such workarounds, so glad you deleted it. My motivation for wishing to see the AFL screwed is contained in one of my earlier posts.

Reminds me of when our corporate masters (who love to roam the world without borders when it suits them) thought they could get away with imposing 'region codes' on DVD players and DVD's.

Legal, illegal or not technically illegal I don't want it discussed here.

Fair enough.  But I guess I can say if you only want to watch MFC matches, not other sports and entertainment, you have to pay Foxtel around $300 (depending on the deal).  That works out to around $14 per match.   That is unreasonable I reckon.

I calculated my deal to be $9.75 a game. I’d be spending more than this at the pub or doing something else on the weekend.

$39 a month??! I got them down to $35 a month last season because I threatened to cancel, then when I'm was actually going to cancel they offered me the same deal for $26 per month.

They wouldn’t budge because I was considered a new customer as I cancelled 6 months ago. But yeh they definitely do drop their prices for exisiting customers who threaten to cancel.

Yes you have to renew. Still free if you are a Telstra customer. It also gives you access to replays on the AFL site

Reading on Bigfooty that the replays via the App are now at 420p quality whereas formerly they were at 720p

Are the games themselves at that resolution... Not the greatest for watching on the big screen.

I have cable TV in Asia and watch matches on Australia Plus. The quality of the normal programs is good standard but when it comes to AFL they are using high compression rates and watching on a 60 inch TV is not the best. I assume this is done to allow it to be sent through the international cables at low cost and almost live whereas normal programs are on three hour delay at least so there is much longer to send the product.

The EPL etc on HD is at a fantastic level. Formula 1 is now using ultra cameras.

Cannot understand also why Foxtel etc does not give viewing options. For example there is footage from overhead and behind the goals they could make available live.. not to mention different commentaries. I would like crowd noise with no commentary for example on many occasions. If they are going to charge top dollar they need to improve the product.

And hasn’t the quality of broadcast plummetted in the last 5 years....

Go to http://watchafl.com.au and take out a subscription. It is worth it while overseas. You can watch games live or on replay.

I have been checking the HD availability on Foxtel Now.

On some devices HD transmission is available (more likely on newer devices).  Also for HD the minimum internet speed required is 7.Mbps (for SD it is 3.0Mbps).  The 'Settings' part of a device usually have a connection 'speed test' option.

My Tablet has the HD option but my internet is too slow for it so I'll be watching in SD (same as FTA).

As an aside - anyone have any suggestions on an internet provider who provides a high speed service at a reasonable cost?  I don't need a service with lots of bells and whistles, just high speed to enable HD transmission to home devices.

So I'm a telstra customer so I get the free AFL app subscription, does anyone know anyway you can stream from your phone to the tv in full screen ? Even using an apple tv  ? My alternative is, my parents have foxtel so can I use the foxtel now app to stream to my tv through their account ? I'll watch Melbourne interstate games at their place just wondering about other games

It's bull[censored] otherwise. Why doesn't the AFL make the app for $100-$150 for the season & you can stream to your tv in full. They'd make a killing.

Crystal balling the sports and general media of the future fascinates me.

The foxtel price point is interesting.

One has to wonder if they reduced their internet service to say $10 a month if they would not increase their subscription rate five plus fold. Given their method of delivery the marginal cost of servicing increased customers would be very low.

Their take up rate in Australia has always been abysmally low and without sport I suspect it would be close to zero.

As many have mentioned it is only a matter of time before the various sports start directly marketing their coverage to consumers. Not sure if it would work in a small market like Oz. At present the AFL gets paid around $200 million a year for the rights. Assuming a million subscribers that would give a break even point of in excess of $200 per subscriber given production costs etc.

It is also not hard to imagine that in the near future the internet rights to sport will exceed the traditional TV rights from a value viewpoint.

Right on cue D_J !

The times are a changing for broadcast rights https://www.theage.com.au/business/companies/sports-rights-bubble-shows-signs-of-bursting-20180223-p4z1fs.html and as you suggest the changes will come sooner rather than later, in all sports.

The AFL may consider itself fortunate to have a broadcast agreement until 2022.  After that who knows what the landscape looks like and if they will get the $ they would hope for.  By then Foxtel (owned by News Ltd) may be quite a different entity if the Murdoch families hold on the company is weakened.

Until then we are stuck with a sub-standard, relatively expensive service.

An Android phone with Micro USB connection will cast full screen to a TV with a HDMI to MHL cable. I just hooked up my old Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and the AFLW game from the AFL app was covering all 55 inches. It requires your phone to support MHL.

The AFL have designed the app so you can no longer stream to your TV via HDMI, via Airplay to Apple TV, or via Chromecast.

I assume they have done this so as not to hurt Foxtel sales of their service forcing some customers to bite the bullet and just get foxtel because they can no longer just get the AFL app to use on the TV.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
