Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Sadly, the AFL is getting more technically adroit.  This year the AFL Live app really has stopped us casting from our Iphones and ipads to a TV for live broadcasts (unlike last year when it was just a tiny bit tricky to do so).  Though as far as I can see the claim that the picture is limited to the size of the device is still misleading because while the action fills an iphone screen, on an ipad most of the screen is taken up with stats and other guff.

So it seems it you want to see footy on a TV screen you have to sign up to one of Foxtel's wonderful services, get a package of junk you don't want for $15/month and then a sports package for even more $ which contains sports in which I have no interest at all.   Thanks AFL; from someone whose only interest is in AFL,  I love you.

foxtel have an offer of $39 per month, NO contract period. New sunbscribers only. You get basic entertainment + sport. $100 instal fee. I think the offer ends this month. You could sign up then cancel at end of footy season

Nicely posited complaint that we all feel - the AFL and its communications/business associates take us all for a ride just because we are there.

That is a good offer dc.

Yesterday I signed up for a two week free trial of Foxtel Now (transmitted via internet rather than cable).  Its a similar deal to above without the $100 install fee and not restricted to 'basic entertainment' - can choose one from 5 'base' pack options.  It worked straight away on a Tablet (download their app first) and Smart TV (with a very old and very basic modem).  No buffering at all.  And I will hopefully connect the Tablet to my 'Dumb' TV as soon as I purchase the right cable/adapter.

Foxtel Now can be installed on multiple devices (have forgotten how many) so can watch the Dees on mobile phone when out and about without any hassles.

For me $39/m is good value as get the 'Lifestyle' base pack and get to watch a lot of international sports and major sporting events eg World Cup, Olympics etc etc

@sueif the cost is an issue maybe get Foxtel Now and share your subscription (give your log on details) with a couple of friends/family and they might contribute to your cost.   As far as I know, there is nothing that says that Foxtel Now on mobile devices can only be used at a given address, in fact that would defeat the purpose.

I haven't tried it yet but Foxtel Now doesn't have the same restrictions as the AFL app being cast to a TV.  Like you, I was against subscribing to the Foxtel monopoly but it is now so flexible that I find it is worthwhile.

It certainly does work and the same goes for Netflix.

Each provider does however have a limit on the number of devices and the number of switches you can do between devices.

IIRC Foxtel Go is 4 devices and one switch per month.

Strangely enough given that Murdoch is said to have skewered the NBN, Foxtel Go and the internet could end up being the biggest money spinner for Foxtel.

I had Foxtel installed on Friday and have the $39 Sports/Entertainemt pack. The installation was free. It’s a good deal.

Foxtel Now with the sport package is $44 a month and only streams in SD.

ATM you can’t compare the two products, Foxtel with the IQ3 box is far superior. Living interstate Foxtel is basically a must and $39 a month to watch every game live and in HD is cheap (I don’t work for Foxtel).

The pub at the end of my street supports the Western Demons, they play all our games there live and the supporters meet to watch them. I’ll head there to watch a few game but the way I looked at it is Foxtel is cheaper than buying one pint of beer a week whilst at the pub.

This actually happened mid last year. I posted in a thread here about it and was able to get a work around, but unfortunately since the app was updated before finals the work around is blocked. You can't even plug your phone directly into a tv and watch, it detects it's outputting video to an external source and gives an error. Absolute robbery.

I was investigating a class action law suit, as the initial terms and conditions mentioned the screen size, but nothing about video to external sources etc. If a user had chosen to do this, they would have the resolution of the smaller screen size, but it was their device, their subscription, and there was no limitation. Mid-season however this limitation was thrown in, after people had paid for a subscription based on initial terms and conditions. Robbery. Lies. Corruption.

I paid for the subscription so I could watch footy on my tv, as I can't get Foxtel in my old apartment building (nor would I want to at the ridiculous cost). All I can do now is visit mates or the pub to watch interstate games. The AFL are making the game unwatchable for the common fan, as more and more games shift to paid tv. Especially lower drawing clubs like us, we barely get any free to air time.

ethan, according to foxtel $39 sports

1. there is a std $100 instal fee. how did you avoid this? were you already cabled/satellited up?

2. after 12 months the $39 becomes $65

Screenshot below of the deal I got DC. $65 is definitely too much, I’ll be cancelling after the footy season. E764AAAE-5652-4D08-89B6-B14D4CD1819D.thumb.jpeg.3f43da417b647a3dd308ba4b2f08045c.jpeg

Crystal balling the sports and general media of the future fascinates me.

The foxtel price point is interesting.

One has to wonder if they reduced their internet service to say $10 a month if they would not increase their subscription rate five plus fold. Given their method of delivery the marginal cost of servicing increased customers would be very low.

Their take up rate in Australia has always been abysmally low and without sport I suspect it would be close to zero.

As many have mentioned it is only a matter of time before the various sports start directly marketing their coverage to consumers. Not sure if it would work in a small market like Oz. At present the AFL gets paid around $200 million a year for the rights. Assuming a million subscribers that would give a break even point of in excess of $200 per subscriber given production costs etc.

It is also not hard to imagine that in the near future the internet rights to sport will exceed the traditional TV rights from a value viewpoint.

Thanks for that info. i was thinking of buying a device to direct connect through HDMI but good to know it's not worth wasting my $.

I'm really p!ssed off with the AFL.  I live in NSW, take out 3 Demons memberships, get to go to 1 match every couple of years if we are lucky, and the best advice  to see matches on a TV is to pay another $240 for 6 months (or maybe $340+ if I can't get the deal ET got, and even if I do it looks like they will jack up the price after a year).

Re SD/HD on Foxtel Now.  This says HD is available for sports channels...https://www.foxtel.com.au/now/support/how-it-works/how-to-use/high-definition.html  Not sure how to check it tho.

Like you I find it cheaper than going to a local to watch a game when I can't get to the G or games are interstate or not on FTA.  A meal and a couple of drinks offsets the cost of Foxtel Now (my cost @ $39/m) quite quickly.

On @daisycutterpoint of higher cost after 12 months.  Not sure if it applies to Foxtel Now - if it does people can opt out in October and sign up for the latest offer in February as a 'new' subscriber.  :)

Overall there seem to be lots of options at reasonable cost and other benefits.

I think Foxtel are being a little deceiving with that page. I queried the technician when he came out to install our IQ3. He said Foxtel Now definitely don’t stream sports in HD. Only certain movies which are downloaded through the ‘On Demand’ function are HD.

Cancelled the AFL app mid last season when they disabled the Chromecast loophole.

It was a  business decision by the AFL and Telstra, as the app is only supposed to be used on phone or tablet, but it probably cost them business ... how many people would have gone and subscribed to Foxtel after cancelling their app subscription?  I bet a very small percentage.

Instead of getting my money for the app, they now don't get  a penny out of me.  If they ever bring back the cast screen function,  I will sign up again.

I get foxtel through telstra got a deal last year, I was paying $90 per month for my home phone and internet but they had a deal with foxtel on top for $99 per month I then just pay for sports on top of that but once footy season is over just get the sports channel cut off as footy is all I watch

Good call. I watch 80% of my telly online, and it's a stone certainty most viewers will one day watch a similar percentage.

Problem is though that most smart TVs and consoles aren't compatible with the website's video player, and there's no app. So I'm stuck watching it on a computer. And my Chromecast also doesn't  work with it.

Oh thats annoying, I just stream it on my laptop and use the HDMI output to run it to the TV.

Think it cost $139 for the year last year, Could be wrong though.

Just went to use it for the first time this year and it came up with login session expired. Do you have to renew every year or is it automatic. Any ideas?

An Android phone with Micro USB connection will cast full screen to a TV with a HDMI to MHL cable. I just hooked up my old Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and the AFLW game from the AFL app was covering all 55 inches. It requires your phone to support MHL.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
