This issue is you haven't put forward an opinion and still refuse to do so.

No one has disputed that a fit and in form Brayshaw is valuable. People have just questioned whether he is fit and in form right now and deserving of a spot in our round 1 team.

Again, you've totally missed the point, everyone played their role on the weekend. It was a good team performance, some played their role better than others.

Sorry ifor this has been pointed out before, but I recon Tommy Mac might have been robbed of a great goal on Saturday.  That one he wheels around from the boundary and snaps.  Comentators said he missed and goal umpire flags a behind (Fox didn't show the hand signals that preceeded), but I thought at the time and have confirmed via freeze frame on the replay tonight that the ball clearly goes the right side of the post for a goal.  The only possibly was that it might have skimed the post, but there isn't any obvious deflection.

Mighty good shot at goal regardless and big Tommy is certainly showing some good forward line skills.  Bring it on (again) in the season proper I say.

I noticed this when watching the replay too.  I assumed it must’ve brushed the post but I didn’t notice the goal umpire signal as such.

Third quarter.

Ball on the edge of the oppositions foward 50, Stretch to Nibbler, to Melksham, to Hannan just inside our foward 50, goes back and drills it right through the middle in windy conditions.  

Such clean, confident ball movement end to end.  Can anyone have thought the MFC capable of such just 3 or 4 years ago?

I remember this. At the time I was celebrating the goal and was shocked it was called a behind. The angle the TV had showed it going through the big sticks.

Regardless of the fact that these games are not worth points, if a team is fielding a near full-strength side, then these games should be taken seriously from many angles. Individual development, synergy between positional lines, observable gameplan, arousal levels/urgency at contests.

All of those things were on show yesterday which is an enormous positive imo and the warning signs are positive in this case.. I don’t care that North will most likely finish in the bottom five this season. They similarly fielded a strong side and the end score-line flattered them tbh. 

There’s now an obvious and real blueprint in the way we are both playing and talking about ourselves as a club. Whether it’s Jennings in his post AFLX interview last week or Bernie in his interview during yesterday’s match, the line “playing the Melbourne way” is becoming thematic. We’re back it up in the way we’re carrying ourselves on-field. 

Whilst I don’t wish to bring it up as a discussion point, it’s easy to see why Watts was pushed out. A player who simply doesn’t display the traits that Goody and co hold every player accountable to. If you want to create and breed a culture that will stick at a club, everyone needs to display those traits.

I don’t care that it was a JLT game. To me these changes are real and what we’re building is very real as opposed to years previous. The list, personalities, coaches and board are all clearly hell bent on re-branding this club. And I love it. Of course I know there’ll be plenty of downs this along the way and this season especially. But for the first time in many many years, I genuinely love watching us play, the “Melbourne” way.

Agree with all but the gratuitous reference to Watts when we really know little of the complex nuance of the decision. It was an unnecessary comment in what was a very salient post

Well I didn't, but clearly this conversation is going to go around in circles. 

FYI, I said "If the team was picked for round 1 now on merit, he would not be in the side."

There's two parts to this that most posters would be able to comprehend. The first is that is if it was picked now, which it isn't. If you can't see the difference between the two statements then I give up. There is still another game to go and I hope he has a great game.

The second is that based on merit, I have seen you come out and repeat the cliches from the club over the preseason when people argued the merit behind some players getting picked despite limited form in the VFL last season, so we'll just leave it at that.

Not disagreeing with you per se, but the "on merit" part is already fairly woolly because the coaches' version of "merit" and the average Demonlander's/spectator's version of "merit" are not always the same. Coaches will give games to players who do what they've been asked to do.

The problem with Pedo is he's basically Stefan Martin mk2: not a key forward, not a mid, and not a tap ruckman at a time when we’ve had a premier one in stock (although it shouldn’t be forgotten that Cam is just 1.93cm, over an inch shorter than that brave Jack Watts fellow who battled away so ‘manfully’ in Max’s absence last year). He and Martin are effectively both utilities, but (unfortunately) ones who need to start in the middle to have any sort of genuine impact.

But Pedo did exactly that last year, and, if it weren’t for existing prejudices, would be recognised as having delivered as much as if not more than what Max offers around the ground – especially last year, when from the very start of preseason Max’s marking completely dropped off.

The obvious trade-off in having a utility start in the ruck – should Gawn go down – is in tap-ascendency, and Max, who is probably the best in the game, showed his worth in this respect just on the weekend. As a completely speculative figure, my rough estimate would be that this attribute of Max’s is worth perhaps two-to-three direct goals per game.

However, while it’s hard to compare in terms of last year (because Max’s return coincided with the collapse of our midfield to injury), I made the argument at the time it’s easier to plan for either a probable tap win or a loss in the centre, rather than a 50-50 scenario – hence Spencer’s non-selection on return from injury – and that according to the contested and clearance stats our midfield adjusted perfectly fine to the loss of Max and the elevation of Pedo to the middle - with the added bonus of Pedo's contribution around the ground.

TLDR: a) Pedersen, as both a personnel and pattern option.

That is what I am saying unless gawn goes down pedo will find it hard to get a game, the modern game is 2 tall key targets, with 3 mid sized forwards with 1 or 2 small forwards, T Mac is a  permanent forward, hogan will play 80% forward 20% midfield, I think T Mac and hogan will take turns playing deep forward and up the ground forward, and everyone can forget about O Mac making way for Frost, for Frost to go in it will be Wagner out, because OMac is Goodwins  preferred fullback, Frost and OMac play deferent roles, the section table will look at dropping a player and  replacing them with another who plays that roll, Frost is wasted playing OMac roll, he is a half back.

There is so much depth, good players will miss out.

We don't have anyone nearly as good as Max but that is stating the obvious.

If you recall, when Max went down early last season Pedo did a great job as his replacement.
