I have asked what MFC approach will be, still thinking it through, they don't want to disrespect by playing kids but also mindful of  what impact it will have on pre season preparation 

Most clubs are in the same position, I asked and they do talk to each other

Sounds like the 9 on 9 competitive drilling we’ve been doing would be a good prep... I imagine it would be integrated into the general preseason program as another element and players chosen based on their individual programs, and it benefitting their preparation for the season proper..?

I didn't think the Big Bash League would work so I don't trust my opinion anyway. Generally, though, I think the AFL strategic decisions are pretty good. I think they've introduced AFLW in a smart way (albeit about a decade late) and although it's still contentious, I support the national expansion including the second teams in NSW and Qld.

But that name! Why the 'X'? I'm sure the AFL will argue that it's because there are 7 players on the ground and 3 interchange players, but surely a better name if it's based on those playing numbers would be AFL7 (or AFLVII if they wanted to stick with the Roman number nomenclature...although that would be patently ridiculous). But I suspect they don't want any comparisons with Rugby Sevens.

Apart from anything else, it's a counterproductive term. Surely the AFL should be holding onto its core product as the most 'extreme' version of the sport, and, they should be arguing, of any sport.

Sounds like a cunning scheme of the AFL marketing department to keep footy before the public as much as possible.

I'd be ropeable if any player is injured playing this.  We have to wear that possibility at training or in a proper practise match, but this is neither of those.   

The penalty for a deliberate rushed behind is interesting (leaving aside the details of  40m and 10 points).  Seems to me the current home&away penalty which is basically an automatic goal is too high a penalty, especially as the decision is necessarily often uncertain and controversial.  Something like the free is taken from 40-50m out (and the point also scored perhaps) might make sense.

Neither did I, but 20/20 as a cricketing product did have a few years of development, popularity and success before it was launched here.  20/20 also came as a response to a specific need or gap in the market.  People who didn't have an entire day to spend at the cricket could see a condensed match.  It also focused the action on a shorter, intense period of time.  I don't see the correlation to the AFL as the matches are already a similar length to 20/20 cricket and the game is constantly moving with consistent scoring.  30 goals in a match by world sporting standards is a huge amount of action!

it is nothing but a disruption to training. 

This is a great idea for schools to take up, but not for the AFL elite players.

Apparently there is no prize money on offer for this season.

Given that there is zero prestige in winning, my tendency would be to give the fringe players a crack.

Whether it will work... who knows. What are successful sports these days are a long way from the traditionally viewed sports.

Just for the record when Ballroom dancing makes the Olympics that's when I stop watching that event.

It will take one injury to a senior listed player, or ‘new hope’ draftee for this to die.  It is a terrible time for it, just before the preseason comp.  imagine if Viney or Hogan did a knee in this stupid concoction.
