I'm amazed that anyone at the club though this camp was a good idea in the first place.  You don't see Barcelona FC sending their players on a punishing "torture" camp to bond as a team.  I'm pretty sure none of the NFL sides do it.  Do Rugby teams?  I wouldn't know, but it seems to me to be something entirely limited to the AFL.  Maybe our coaches should take a leaf from some of the bigger, more professional sports around the world and focus on fitness and skills rather than bonding through shared adversity.

The soccer schedule in Europe in certain domestic leagues is demanding enough IMO.

Most of the top European leagues consist of a 38 game regular season, add domestic cup games, Champions and Europa League games and they are well on the way of featuring in over 50 competitive matches in a season. 

In the off season the top clubs travel to various countries for warm up/exhibition matches. 

We really can't compare our sport to the top European leagues especially Barcelona FC. Their record speaks for itself, boot camp or not.

That is another discussion Ralph. What i am concerned about is that some players have over ruled the Senior Coach publicly, a precedence has been set. 

After the last 10 years The MFC must have coaches that are 100% respected and if there are disagreements to at least keep them inhouse.

Until the next time a situation arises. The players who went to the AFLPA have found a weakness, i have seen it first hand in business and it won’t be any different at an AFL club

Surely the players have the opportunity to silence that by being harder than our competitors. They think we are soft, show them that we are not. Being tough is more important than talking tough.

I think this is the critical thing. All at the club probably would acknowledge the palaver was poorly handled and i don't doubt there would have been some pretty serious angst, partic from goodwin who as gawn said might have felt there was a mutiny from players.

But the critical thing is how the club responds  and moves forward after this palaver. Communication is pretty easy when things are cruising. The real test comes when there is conflict. So in that sense this episode gives the club a terrific opportunity to improve and enhance communication and  cohesiveness.

All good/great clubs have their line in the sand moments (usually a few, not just one).

Hopefully this is one of ours and it builds stronger relationships.

There is only a problem if the players lose the trust in Goodwin's game plan if the believe in his game plan then there is no problem, this is all mfcss many are just looking for something to go wrong

Didn’t Roos bring in Leading Teams years ago to address leadership, communication and unity. They probably also talked about building a brand.

The aftermath of the camp was summed up in the concluding comments. The best way to show the players aren’t mentally soft is to demonstrate it on the field. Max himself acknowledged this was true.

You'd still be happily working a 56 hour week with no holidays with that supine attitude.  Earlier you said you were surprised the boss hasn't resigned.  Now your'e saying  if the players were employees in your workplace, the players would have been sacked for going to their union.  So it sounds like there should be no one left at the club - neither resigning coach nor sacked players.

Goody has already come out and addressed the issue. He's happy with where things are at and is already happily moved on. I'm he's put it back on the players now, it' up to them to show if they can do it on field.

well as gawney said he was more disappointed that the young players who went to the aflpa didn't first go to the players leadership group, if they felt intimidated going to the coach (or coaching staff)

so. players had the option of 1. talking to coach 2. talking to assistant coaches. 3. talking to leadership group 4. talking to aflpa. lot of disappointed people there.

Pretty sure this article about the Storm is the exact camp the Demons players went on. Worked out pretty well for them.

So the best NRL team does bootcamps and the best AFL team sends all young players up Kokoda.

Otherwise it isn't really fair to compare to overseas leagues and sports.

NFL teams only get access to their players in minimal preseason time so they pretty much have to spend it all learning the play book.

Soccer have huge seasons packed with games and it's a skill and athleticism based sport. I'm not trying to start code wars and say soccer players are soft but the game itself has far less physical contact. You can't send a team out to physically intimidate the opposition either, you'll end up with 8 men on the field.

The AFL is the pinnacle sporting league for physical and mental demands in that it requires endurance, strength and speed combined with skills all performed under the threat of physical danger and as a team. Whether it's bootcamp methods or otherwise I think part of preseason surely has to involve stressing the team as close to breaking point and having them work through it together. How can a team excel on match day under severe stress if they've never trained for it?
