jr he is out of contract at the end of this year.

IMO he will not get another for two reasons.

All his career he has been good one week and poor the next two add in that he has seldom played a season without a good part of it being lost to injury.

There are now others who are more consistent and have sounder bodies.

A fill in player who will not be around in 2019.

Thats exactly right.

Will be the difference between him being the best key back in the league, or just a glorified Jared Rivers.

I attended yesterday's craft session, as they call it. The music was blaring in what was perfect conditions. Some things that stood out to me:

-Dom Tyson looks fit and was second to ANB in the interval running at the end of the session

-Bernie looks 10 years younger and is covering the ground as well as he ever has

-Salem was getting his hands on the footy a lot at the stoppage drills. He, Dom and Clarry were the standouts here

-The coaches support Trac verbally during the running drill at the end. Twig Rawlings really revved CP5 up to give it everything

-Charlie Spargo has clean hands, moves very well and looks a good user. Harry Petty has an unusual gait and looks ungainly. Oskar moves well and is a penetrating kick, but obviously his conditioning is a fair way off the others at the moment

-Pedo looks lean and is covering the ground well

-Wags and Hunty got to do a fun drill. The had to sit under high balls inside our defensive 50 and take a ride on Jade Rawlings' back and take the grab. Poor old Jade played the step ladder here

-Gawny is very verbal and gave a lot of instruction to the on-ballers. Benny Matthews really drives Nut Harmes a lot of instruction at these drills

-I enjoyed watching Max Rooke working with the small forwards v the small defenders. There was great intent here, and Dean Kent looked to be relishing being back with the main group. 

-Post session, I watched Billy, Salem and Clarry stay out and do some touch work, Corey Maynard do some stuff with the specialist coaches and Charlie Spargo do some grappling with a phys eder.

While I don't think he'll get much opportunity this year due to our improved depth, I feel as though Spargo is going to be a very shrewd selection by our recruiting team.  What he lacks in height he makes up for in skills and intent and that can take him a long way.

I know nine tenths of nothing about Spargo and as you say he is short.

In AFL you have to be at worst good and probably very good to make it when you are short.

Just look at Kennedy he was a short player of  average ability.

That wont cut it.

I hope he is very good and as always time will tell.

size is irrelevant in football

it's about ability and desire

that's one of the best things about afl players - they can be anywhere between 165 and 215cm tall and still be able to make an impact

re kent, i think he's on a hiding to nothing this year, which is a shame as he has pace and aggression, but he simply has never been able to get his body 'right', and his skills are as hit and miss as his application appears to be

i maintain that if a player misses too much football until the age of 22 they are massively up against it to ever 'make it' - you never get that 'development time' back

Sorry DA but I don't agree if you are short you start off behind others taller than you in AFL 21st Century.

To counter that you have to have more ability than someone taller than you.

Being good simply is not enough if you have to be very good to have a long term career at senior level.

Now a lot of this hinges on how small you are of course by being short is a definite disadvantage when playing AFL in this era.

short players have very restricted opportunities and need a-grade skills to get a game these days

that's fine, but i wouldn't be calling jack viney a midget if i was you...and he gives up 13cm to oliver, and about 20cm to patrick cripps for instance...

his ability and desire is what allows him to (more than) compete with much, much bigger midfielders

similarly, nev jetta is not exactly a giant but his ability and desire allow him to compete - in the air, no less - with players significantly bigger than he is

I agree with you 'old dee',  you have be something really special if you are short in AFL terms.

From the little I've seen of Spargo, he just might be that.

His kicking and hands are quite a step up from Kennedy for a start and he's not another Collingwood reject which has to count for something.

...but as you say, time will tell.

viney at 5'10" could have been a kpp in a 60's premiership side

jetta at 5'11" would have been a tall in previous eras

anyways these guys are a looong way off being 165cm

You're stating the bleeding obvious, OD.  If he is a player of average ability then he'll struggle, even more so if he's short.  That's not news to anyone.

However, from all reports (not just training, reports on him coming up to the draft) he is the complete opposite to a Ben Kennedy which is why I think he may end up being a shrewd choice.  We want competitors and players with ability and he seems to have it in spades, even if that's going on limited exposure.

He also has a penetrating left foot but a diabolical right one. His one-sidedness is another negative which goes against him.

To be fair, I noticed last year that a number of our predominantly one-sided players (Viney, Tyson and also Kent) tried to use their other side more than they had previously.  I hope they all continue to work on improving this aspect of their own games.

Spargo was picked primarily  (imo) due to his aggro. He loves the contest. You cant teach that. Look at clarry, he isnt the biggest guy out there but bats well above due to his appetite.
