Whately will be missed by listeners on the ABC. But they are unlikely to change with him.

Both are not used to private section endorsement interruptions and it will be interesting how  this works.

i feel that we will see Gerard sink to mediocracy while some previously unknown will seamlessly replace him on ABC.

Yes it’s interesting, Whateley was reported today as saying he won’t be changing his style and management don’t want him to,  the plans for the station reaching a much broader audience was the appeal to switch.

But as already said, outside afl season, growing the audience will be tough.

Growing any radio audience is tough just look at the money FM stations throw at it. The radio Market is so fragmented it is very difficult to turn a reasonable profit.

Whateley is doing a Tim Lane. 

He is probably the closest radio/TV person to Tim Lane, as an articulate and intelligent broadcaster of virtually all sport.

He does his homework and speaks knowledgeably about the sport that he is broadcasting, provides accurate commentary on the action and provides analysis on the sport. He does the micro and macro stuff well. 

Was Tim Lanes move a success? I'm not sure.

Probably ask Tim. The listener may have a different slant but none of us can get into the mind of the commentator. 

From GW's view it is understandable. Age and career wise, and money wise.

Things are not hunky dory at the ABC with cuts, cuts and more cuts. Morale is poor and the ABC risks being cut out of some sports or having reduced coverage or reduced broadcasting rights in the future. 

People talk about the bogans on other stations, but the quality of commentators on ABC has decreased over recent years, presumably due to funding cuts and the ABCs need to reduce expenses. 

I don't think it will be a big deal if the SEN thing does not work but it will be a stepping stone for GW to take on other opportunities and improve his pay packet.

No they haven't, at least not entirely.

The non-union mine that I work at, pays $125k base for a shotfirer, whereas the (heavily) unionised nearby BMA mine gets paid $160k+ for the exact same job, on the exact same roster. Then add % based bonuses and Super on top. All for a yearly union sub of approx 3 grand or so. On the flip side, I dropped more than 30 grand after taking redundancy from my last job, and accepting the same job on a staff individual agreement.

 

All political parties have a image problem, because they are all led by the same kind of people. It's not unique to the ALP.

Unions in the cities have been smashed Faulty. Most kids i have spoken to don’t know what a Union Membership is, and work 2-3-4 jobs on short notice. The Mining Industry i am not privvy to. 

It is a big problem for the ALP. 

The Liberals still have ideas that are relevant inside Toorak!!

Cities maybe, but where the big union dues are, they are still hanging on, granted on a much reduced membership. As soon as times pick up again, and they always do, the competition for permanent employees grows, and that's where the unions come back to the fore. I for one would benefit greatly from a unionised workforce. Simply need the price of coal to stay solid, and for a few long term supply contracts to be signed.

Not sure what stats you base those views on faulty. Union membership overall has dropped rapidly from about 60% in the 1960s, fast heading towards single digit figures now. Union membership in the construction industry is around 9% and the highest unionised catagory is professionals/managerial eg. education. The decline in blue collar workers in Oz mirrors the decline in union membership overall in the last 60 years.

Just to bring the topic back to SEN, I note that its owner, Pacific Star Network, has asked that its shares be suspended on the stock exchange pending an announcement about a merger. I have no inside info, but I suspect it's with Crocmedia. Pacific Star Network had announced a few weeks (months?) ago that it was in negotiations with Crocmedia.

 Safety on ALL Mining Sites is a red hot issue. Nothing gets out. Especially the accident stats.

Conversely on privatised Port sites like Freo and Darwin a fair amount of stuff gets in. Like Unknown drugs etc.
