Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Updates for Delistings, Reitrees, Trades and 'B' Rookies.

image.png.f993905e0276d41da2b2a71eb2e013ef.png

We now have 7 senior + 1 'A' Rookie vacancy.

My guess is we will use pick #104 and maybe #86 to upgrade Keilty and/or T Smith as both have been rumoured to have contracts in the offering.  Nothing to lose using those very late picks for them.

That would leave 4 live draft picks with at least 5 senior list and 3 'A' Rookie list vacanies.

Vand rumoured to have a contract soon to be announced.  This leaves JKH and Dion.  Given the changes already there is a very good chance they will have new contracts.  JKH has done enough to warrant one and Dion has done a fair bit of work in defence with Jetta so their might be role there going forward.  Worth a one year contract to find out.

After that are no more 2018 OOC to be decided.  That leaves contracted player' futures: namely, Tyson, Garlett, Hogan.

Still lots of water to go under this bridge!!

Thanks @Lucifer's Hero - love your work.

To put this all in perspective:

2019 - 7 changes (thus far, not including Kent)
2018 - 8 changes
2017 - 8 changes
2016 - 9 changes
2015 - 11 changes
2014 - 11 changes

It seems like a lot of changes considering that we made a prelim (Collingwood had 8 changes this year). We could legitimately be looking at 10 changes to our list which if you told me that at the start of the year (or 8 weeks ago) I would have laughed.

Thank you.

Yep, it has taken 5 years to remove all players who for whatever reason didn't make the grade in the Roos/Goodwin era, some of whom were mature age players that came to fill list gaps and have since gone.  5 years - not very long really with a lot of hard-ache decisions along the way.

The only players pre 2014 are Jones, Jetta, McDonald, Viney and Hogan (??).  An unbelievable turnaround.

The fab thing is, of the senior players OOC in 2019 everyone of them would be a starting 22 at an AFL club if not with mfc.  That means we will have few to delist next year and more than likely will be trades (this year or next).

So not only have we totally rebuilt our list we have also positioned ourselves to get good value draft picks in for the players we lose.

This has made me feel a lot better than where I was when I was posting. I was lamenting the fact that we are again loosing players from our list. You are right that the 2019 OOC are really best 22 either at the MFC or other top 8 clubs. Baker, Wagner, Maynard are the only ones there that I'd question might not break Geelong's starting 22, but I'm looking forward to seeing what Baker can do. My worry is experienced depth, which is why I dont want to loose guys like Tyson and JKH. They are good players who will offer more next year than pick 45.

Building on this, last year we lost Garland and Watts who were in our best 22. The others were Hulett (0 games), Kennedy (bust trade), Lumumba (well Clark didnt do anything either), Spencer (great back up), Trengove (sad but glad he got a go with Port), and White (didn't loose anything here as he came to Casey anyway).

This year we have lost Vince to retirement which is odd for us as we haven't had many who have lasted to retirement lately, Balic which was sad for the boy but we never had him in MFC colours and most thought depth anyway. King and Flip were basically out due to their in and out from Casey by mid way through this year and our preference not to play them in the ruck. McKenna was a speculative pick that none of us really put hope in, Bugg was good for us during transition and I hope he gets a gig somewhere else, but no one had him best 22 at the start of the year, and Pederson has again been a great servant during transition but he would just be back up again next year.

Now it comes down to players we don't really want to loose. I know things happen during the year, but I dont know where I am de-listing three from next year's OOC.

it is getting harder, a great thing indeed, but there are still some who would be surplus to requirements,

Wagner for One is obvious to cull ,

I would think stretch would close to that too

Last year of Lewis...  and that is three players.

If D.Johnstone  and JKH ges contract extensions they will porbably be only one year, and will need to show something good to get another...

It is a good sign out delistings are getting stronger and the selection table are having more headaches

There is an interesting article on AFL.com.au that talks about WCE and Collingwood list builds for the GF.

I wanted to see how our 22 on the past weekend matches up. In terms of top end talent, they are actually very similar. All 3 clubs have drafted 5-7 top end and then added a heap of top end through trades. This is going to be something moving forward that I'm interested in where we go. You can add Lever and Hogan to the list of first rounders and Stretch to the second rounders on top of 3 guys in Lewis, Melksham, and Tyson who are top 10 picks in their own right. There is a lot of top end talent in here moving forward, even though we like to talk about our steals with Gawn, McDonalds, Vanders etc.

First Round Picks (WCE 7; Coll 5; Melb 6)
Petracca (Pick 2)
Brayshaw (3)
Oliver (4)
Salem (9)
Weideman (9)
Jones (12)

Second Round Picks (WCE 3; Coll 2; Melb 3)
Viney (26 but first round bid)
Spago (29)
Neal-Bullen (40)

Third Round Picks (WCE 5; Coll 0; Melb 4)
Gawn (34)
Hannan (46)
T. McDonald (53)
O. McDonald (53)

Fourth Round / rookie (WCE 1; Coll 6; Melb 4)
Jetta (51)
Harmes (2 in rookie draft)
Vandenberg (2 in rookie draft)
Smith (Category B)

Trade / Free Agency (WCE 6; Coll 9; Melb 5)
Tyson (originally pick 3)
Lewis (originally pick 7)
Melksham (originally pick 10)
Frost (53)
Hibberd (pick 4 rookie draft)

imo the list changes remaining this year is just the Kent trade and if anyone wants JKH he goes for a third rounder or even earlier than our 4th.

then next year seems to be pretty obvious too with Garlett appearing to lose his passion for it especially in the VFLGF looked very absent, Lewis raps up potentially losing his spot mid year to a Stretch/Maynard/Hunt off the flank/through the middle with Jones shifted back and Wagner +/- Keilty, Johnstone if they dont come on and JKH if he's still around getting the chop too. Baker's outside pace makes him necessary to keep trying for at least an extra year on what he's got now

I make it 7 spots left on primary list - may and KK brought it to 33. You're allowed 40 + 4 rookies.

picks 23,28,54,62,91 is 5....so 2 extra spots? one rookie position with maynard, smith and keilty currently rookies.

State of play post trades.

May is on a 5 year contract and I have 3 year contracts for Preuss and Kolodjashnij but not sure if the latter are correct.  Advice to confirm contract length would be appreciated.

Given our first pick before the draft (post comp picks) was #36 to now have #23 and #28 and rebalance our team is a terrific result.

Overall List:

Current list size = 33.  Minimum list size =  38.  Maximum list size:  40 (plus Rookies)

To reach the minimum of 38 we need to add at least 5 players.  Hard to see us using picks #91 or #105 so would have to assume that either/both Keilty and T. Smith get promoted to senior list or we recruit a delisted player or two.

Also, Mahoney mentioned that while happy with our draft holding it may change before the draft.  Watch this space!

Not sure about Kade, but Preuss signed on for 3 years -

http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2018-10-12/preuss-joins-melbourne-in-trade-deal

MELBOURNE has secured ruckman Braydon Preuss in a trade that will see the departure of midfielder Dom Tyson to North Melbourne.

Agreeing to terms on Friday morning, Preuss will wear the red and blue until at least the end of 2021, while the Demons also receive pick No.62 of the NAB AFL Draft in the deal.

Thank your to posters for feedback and corrections.

Changes were fix draft pick error - we have #54 but not #36.

Also updated for T.Smith and Keilty being re-contracted as 'A' Rookies for 2019.

So we need to fill a minimum of 5 (maximum of 7) list spots and with 4 effective draft picks we would be looking at one to three Restricted Free Agents.

It still wouldn't surprise me to see some late pick trading, giving up picks next year in for this year.

Only 3-6 potential delistings or retirements next year:

Lewis, Baker, Garlett, Wagner, Stretch, Jones.

So we might not be planning to use as many picks in 2019. Our 2019 first pick for  WCE 2018 pick 20 and pick 61 would give us six picks in the first 62 this year.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
