Either Port will look unbelievably stupid in the way they’ve gone about this trade period or they’ll make many other clubs look stupid for not taking a similar approach by winning a flag.

It’s a risky strategy. But they’re going to have to make top 4 minimum to justify the way they’ve gone about things.

Probably not the place to post that ^ but I’m amazed at how aggressive they’ve been. They clearly think they’re right in contention for a flag next year.

In any case, as others have already expressed, I’m happy for Trengove and hope he lasts longer than a year on their list. As far as AFL footballer stories go, his has been pretty rough and he deserves some individual success.

Just as an aside does anyone know how Jack Grimes went this year.  He chose not to take a one year contract which is interesting given what Trenners has done.

Not dismissing what you are saying here at all, but being slow hasn't held back some great AFL footballers in the past.  I just wonder if someone can reinvent a role for him that rejuvenates his career.  Not that I don't think that Goody and the MFC didn't try that, but whatever they did, it didn't come off.  I don't think playing off a half back flank at AFL level really worked for Jack, I feel he's the sort of player that needs to be in the guts where the action is.

... I know I'm probably grasping at straws, but I'd just really like to think this guy still has a chance of becoming a sucessfull footballer again.

He could well be successful at football, but it won’t be at AFL level. 

Watch his game against Nought. He was nowhere near the ball for 99% of the game. 

His leg has no power. Not his fault, and good luck to him for getting 12 months more of AFL wage. 

The medical staff during 2012-14 at the MFC should be ashamed at what they allowed to happen. It was a load bearing injury...

The slow players you are probably referring to would have been successful because they had elite traits that helped them to overcome the lack of pace.

Elite hands, decision making,awareness, game sense.

Jack is elite at none of those and in the end was possibly the slowest mover I have ever seen for someone of his size.

I am stunned that Port have wasted a pick on Jack. Great news for him of course, but one their supporters won't be at all happy with.

It is very risky,  as it will kill their development for a few years, as less young talent is brought in and developed due to lack of list space .

I don't really disagree with any of this, like I think I aluded to, it's more of a romantic desire than something based in reality.  He was bloody horrible against North, might as well have not been on the ground almost.  I would say that Jack has good around football skills (a good strong mark and I'd suggest a pretty reliable if not close to an elite kick), is a hard inside type and good overall footy sense, but to have really elite footy smarts is where he would need to reinvent himself.  I also reconise that is something probably more innate and instinctive that it's unlikely.

Haven't they also "lost" (ie, delisted, traded, etc) something like 13 players? Even if they bring in Lindsay Thomas, that still leaves 6 slots for new players.

My concern if I were a PA supporter is whether the  2018 version of the team can gel with so much change.

At what point though is it reasonable to take the foot off 'developing' as it were and start 'doing' with what's developed ?

It seems to me some FDs are so caught up in the notion of draftings and Munyanas that they never actually pull the trigger...its always 'next year' or such.

I applaud Hinkley and Co for having a crack.

We got bent over paying any amount of Watts wage considering how many players Port have acquired. Whilst not all of them were top end (in terms of money not necessarily talent) none of them are 1st or 2nd year players. Then to cap it off they offload Lobbe for pick 2482 to free up salary cap space for themselves. It's Ports job to manage their salary cap not ours. They should of made one of their overrated players take a pay cut.

I'm amazed at how good I feel about this. Better than any win in the last couple of years!
