Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

So, on the other side of that same coin, if we're pretty close to last year's figure, that also means we must have about 7,000 new members. And that's about 20% of the current membership. That's impressive, although the non-renewal rate is equally unimpressive. The club needs to identify better ways to hold on to members - it should be easier to keep what you've got than continually finding new people to sign up.

Some context needed.

We are close to last years figure as at March 16.  See dc's post below.

no......actually 405 up as of friday

35,485  16/3/2018

35,080   16/3/2017

Last years final tallly was approx 42,250, so there are still about 7,000 2017 members yet to renew.   If there have been 'New' members then the 2017 members yet to renew is >than 7,000.

TBH I'm surprised we haven't significantly exceeded last years tally and already pushing the 42,000 mark.  The club (rightly) boasted record crowds at our games last year and for some reason we haven't converted those attendees to memberships in any significant number.  On the back of last year's crowds I expected us to push close to 50,000 this year.  While there is still time for that to happen, I no longer have that hope.  I would imagine the club would be fairly disappointed with the conversion rate of attendees to members.

Thanks for the clarification. I misunderstood and thought that the 7,000 new members were part of the 35K. My point, though, that holding on to old members should be easier than recruiting new ones still stands. It's customer service 101.

I know this sounds a bit narrow minded but our inability to play a final last year  has no doubt kept some away.

Unfortunately, many people only wish to be associated with winners. As we win more and gain more respect, those that have stayed away will  finally return.

I've always thought our membership target for 2018 should be approximately 45,000.

Start the season well and we're a big chance to exceed that 45,000, which IMO is excellent for a club that has not played finals in over a decade.

Agreed.  For some reason our customer service has been a bit lacking this year.  Lots of anecdotes throughout this thread on issues re membership packs: cards, scarves etc.

Add to that DL commentary in the last few days on our website:  lacking training times for the last month/yesterday's work out at Casey, lacking twitter advice of those, lacking advice of today's VFL practice game times - fair contingent of AFL players selected for it,  lack of Twitter feed on said practice game (People were posting from the BH site onto DL).  Not to mention the 'Get your finals tickets' fiasco last year when we didn't make the finals.

I'm with you, if we make communications with the club, using its website etc good experiences they can only help keep the members we have.

DD do you think we would have more paid up members now if we had of played finals last year?

That’s a very good question- I suspect you are not going to like the answer - No- let me explain.

With memberships you are in the business of selling hope. Most MFC understand the process  - we are grinding out solid sustainable improvement year after year.

We talk alot about the Tigers - they are brilliant at selling hope then upgrading your financial commitment- you would be staggered what I pay for my Tigers membership - but that’s for business reasons.

Would you buy or sell a share based on a company having one bad day - the trend is you friend. One bad day on the football field is exactly the same - makes no difference- the trend is your friend.

Its only the irrational numpities that make desicions based on one game - Essendon and every other team in the league are living proof you sell memberships on hope.

You just have to ignore the “negativity” coming from the MFCSS  inflicted. They are complaining experts , they will complain about the fixture, complain about the AFL, complain about the MFC - Roos addressed it but they are so stupid they did not understand what Roos was talking about.

We have a very bright future in a very tough environment.

Rubbish.

If we had made finals last season we would be at least 5,000 more members right now than we are today...

I'll add another one. I rang the membership dept a week and a half ago to clarify whether I had purchased the additional "birthday club" pack for my kids so they would get a birthday card signed by their favourite. All confirmed and advised that the cards would get sent early in the week to ensure its received before my son's birthday which is tomorrow.

Still hasnt arrived. It's not a big deal because he doesn't know about it but I thought I'd surprise him with it and it's just the fact they can't seem to get things right. I know it's a busy time of year etc and Australia Post is horrible these days but really if it was sent by Tuesday it should've come by Friday at the latest.

I'm not gonna slam the club/membership dept as it's not that big a deal to me but it's just another example and if it happens to someone else who is not as rusted on it could be another dissatisfier that sees them decide to not renew.

You are spot on - in his mind the random number pulled out his rear end is pure negative speculation.

Fortuntely, MFC has a loyal resilient supporter base - we prove it Year in Year out. But we have also had “the veil” to deal with - such is life.

These days the club is a very positive environment with very positive people controlling the Levers. Long may it continue.

Apparently not,  I have some interactions with North and no matter the season (Premiership or bottom 3) they have always had a very similar turn over of members, which I did find surprising.

Now whether they need to be smarter in how they engage members and find the right points to know when a member might be leaving is a different story.

On a brighter note, as members, we just took advantage of the MFC members reserved seats for Sunday's game against Geelong at the MCG. It was astonishingly good value from the Club, in comparison to the offering that existed previously from the money-hungry Ticketek, who required, for just ordinary seats, $75 per seat for members of the MFC.

The lowest-priced seats for MFC Members offered by Ticketek were in the order of $60 per seat, in the bleaches of the Northern Stand or behind the Richmond-end goals bleachers. Neither were acceptable.

Suddenly, the MFC offered yesterday, Monday, 2 Members tickets for $20 @ $10 each. In addition, we were also able to collect from the MFC two Guest tickets beside our seats for $18 each. We took immediate action and purchased the package for four people in the reserved seat area for less than one reserved seat in the above Ticketek bleachers.

This is the way MFC Members should be treated - more often. In reality, it is $10 per seat and next to / near the facilities, with good viewings of the ground just on the wing at Level 1. What's is equally advantageous is that these tickets were issued electronically the same day, arriving in e-mail within minutes.

I'd encourage any Member to take advantage of this great offering to indicate to the Club that this is what Members might wish. It may even expand as time goes by - at least one could hope.

Hey Ds56, I'm curious to know how the club let members know of offer.  I haven't received an email nor an sms and I couldn't find offer on the website tab 'Match Day Information' - the only ticket referenceon there is via Ticketek.

Edit:  I'm not on twitter but just checked mfc twitter feed and didn't see anything.

Yep, sure hope I can help you.

I received the offer on e-mail (I am an interstate Armchair Member of MFC, from Adelaide).

From there, I immediately called (and got through relatively quickly) the MFC Membership area on the following number: 1300 336667 to enquire about the e-mail offer to Members - and the possibility of taking along 2 guests (non-members). They said: 'No worries...' and facilitated it all on the spot.

I paid via Debit Card over the phone. Within minutes, via MFC through Ticketek, the goodies, complete, had arrived. I pick up the guest passes to the Members' seating area ($18 each x 2) from just outside Gate 3 at the 'G from 1pm Sunday - but please note, the guests have to pay a General Entry fee of $20 approximately to get in as General Entry - and then accompany the 2 of us, Members, to the allocated seating - with entry via Gate 5, just a few hundred metres north around the Ground from Gate 3.

Hope this all helps. 'Carna Dees!

Thanks so much for all the info.

It could be an offer to only interstate members so that would explain why Victorian members didn't hear about it.

Delighted for you and your friends.  And it is good to see the club doing something special and looking after interstate fans.  We in Melbourne forget how lucky we are that we can get to so many games.

Hope the team gets over the line for you.  Go Dees!

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
