Again, didn't set the world alight at state level but I saw him in Geelong's first final against Gippsland and he was super impressive. I think it's a good thing if he slides.

Played most of the year at HB for the Falcons, is lightning quick with a precise left-foot and great spatial awareness. But what impressed me most in that final were his defensive efforts and his desire to scrap really hard when the ball was in dispute. I was expecting to see a player of his profile to be predominantly outside but he recorded 6 tackles in that first final, spoiled with intent and you could clearly see he had the hunger to defend hard as well as attack. Really good sign.

I think he could be groomed to play wing at AFL level. I love him.

Don't think anyone we draft with 29 or a lower pick is going straight to a wing or anywhere else at Melbourne. Expect a fairly long learning curve in the VFL with Casey first.

Straight to the wing at Casey will suffice. My point was more that there doesn't seem to be too many wing specialists to come out of junior-age level. Curious why.

Powerful @ 73kgs?  Maybe as a jockey.  Not another skinny kid (ANB type) i hope.  Have alot of respect for Bucks but i prefer the power and height (contested marking ability) that someone similar to a Cripps/Fyfe brings.   Very hard to match up on and shut down and can play in multiple postions in smaller or taller type roles.

The "tidy up his kicking" another worry.  It is no accident we are presently the worst disposal team in the AFL and this area has to be targeted big time and improved upon in a massive way via recruiting selections if we are ever going to win regularly and pick up some silver along the way.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing for the supporter...

...but we should expect an amount of foresight from the professionals at the club.

Haha, interesting bump.

I won't mention the club I was doing some work for that year. But let's just say it's clear they had a set of criteria that every player had to meet before being selected at those earlier rounds. Spargo possesses unquestionable competitiveness and his body of work is a lot stronger than Petrucelle's. 

I really rate Fritsch, but I'd have taken Petrucelle over Petty.  

Goodwin has been uncompromising in the type of player he wants. And now it's coming back to sting us a bit. 

Still looking forward to seeing Ling play for the swans. He's been super unlucky with injury though.

Fyfe was drafted at 75 kg. Two more than Petrucelle. He has incredible natural power.

And neither one of Fyfe or Cripps have great foot-skills. They are simply contested animals that are physically bigger and stronger than their opponents and therefore have an enormous advantage at the coal face. Fyfe of course has some other tricks. 

But no one predicted them to be the players they are today. That's the crazy thing about the draft. 

Cripps went outside the top 10 and Fyfe went in the 20's.

I agree re: growing potential and putting on bulk but both have inches on Pet and can play tall as well as through the mid field.  Versatility is invaluable in today's game.  Tracc is someone similar who we are all hoping can reach the heady heights of a Cripps or Fyfe (but even he is a bit on the shortish size in comparison).  Pet could be amazing but this club isnt exactly in a postion to risk another potential skinny smallish framed kid coming through IMO.  We need some big framed boys who we can call on reasonably quickly after a few seasons down at Casey honing their craft and hopefully learning the Goody game style whatever it might become (i suspect it will change  considerably from the current version).

I suppose the real question is would you swap Spargo for Petruccelli today. I would and that is as far as it goes. 

Revisiting past drafts can be painful and especially for us.

I liked Petruccelle and like several Demonlanders was keen on grabbing him in that draft. My obsession at the time being, like most people, that we lacked speed, but also had and still have a running theme of 'we lack really dangerous players'.

But having said that, the kid has all of five games to his name and that has included one really good game one the weekend, but still only one.

Spargo's form was always very 'kid-like' last year and has fallen off a cliff to start this year, but he is not a write-off. Fritsch on the other hand is probably the highest-performed player of any that were available at pick 31, and remains so despite his weaker start to 2019.

So, as much as Petruccelle is someone it would be great to have, I don't think it is useful to make 'if only' comparisons.

Spargo is icing on the cake. In a strong skilful team he can deliver that strategic edge.

He really isn't suited to our gameplan. Then again that could be said about a lot of the MFC players

Our game-plan needs tweaking, especially now with 6-6-6.

We are one-dimensional and have been flogged a number of times by teams who did their homework on us and who played a disciplined game-style to counter ours.

Those teams are Collingwood, Richmond, West Coast, St Kilda, Hawthorn etc.

I'm talking about those games we're we look completely rubbish and are blown away. I understand that when it works for us, we're extremely hard to beat. But those losses were always huge warning signs imo. Our zone breakdown namely.

What's he done about those games? Like seriously. What's been addressed? 

After these horrible games, all we do is follow it up with a 'response' type of game. Like we did against Sydney and possibly tonight against Richmond. And like we did many times last year after those types of losses. They're bandaid wins. The problems have never been addressed by Goodwin in a consistent way because he refuses to budge with game-style or personnel.

It's been happening for three years and whilst teams around us have tweaked their game-style, setups and personnel, Goodwin has remained extremely rigid on the style and type of player he wants in our team.

It's biting us big time now.

Tyson, Jones, Lewis on wings.

Contested and one-dimensional midfielders as half-forward such as ANB and Vandenberg. 

One-geared midfield who are all drawn to the ball. None of whom are elite kicks.

Some major reviews/changes ahead me thinks.  Just a matter of when.

The depth is a massive concern also.  Gathering yard's pretty much barren of high end purebreds.  We need some new speedy two way running stock with solid finishing skills pronto, one or two nippy smalls to play forward/back (Lockhart maybe one option down the track) and a genuine KPF (Cameron's up in 2020?).
