Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

I like this team; I think that Garlett will get in before many here (Fritsch, Hannan, Harmes and ANB).

My guess would be Garlett in and Harmes in the Emergencies.

I'd give Garlett a rest for a week - so that Hannan and Fritsch can work on a routine or two. I would really like Frosty - even from the bench - to get into the backline as a mad f'ker running wild. That guy is now INTIMIDATING and that is what we need ...

Backline: Think the preferred 7 is just about picked, although ideally I'd replace on of the fossils with a solid two way defender or slide Gus or Salem to half back and play an extra mid.

Mids: Without Viney but hopefully with Clarry I think the best 8 pick themselves

Forwards: Sounds more and more like Tom misses. Still could go any of 4 directions with the very last spot - Bugg/Fritsch/Hannan/Garlett but at the end of the day I think the game plan is built on contested ball and work rate and that's not Jeff's strengths

Garlett plays.

A rest before playing a game??? Frost may look imposing but his kicking is horrible.

Garlett if fit has to play.

Not sure we should be questioning Garlett’s work rate. He worked extremely hard last summer to have a better year than 2016.

He was the number 1 ranked forward for pressure in the first half of the year and his defensive pressure was first class. The 42 goals were an absolute bonus last season. He had some quite moments later in the year but had to deal with some family issues. IMO we need his craft and he’s a certain starter if fully fit.

if oliver does miss, i presume jones will go back to starting in the square at first bounce - i would've thought he'd be on a wing thi syear as per pre-season plans, but injuries might necessitate a change to plans

team on paper:
B: Jetta - O Mac - Hibberd
HB: Lewis - Lever - Vince
C: Hunt - Jones - ANB
HF: Hannan - Petracca - Melksham
F: Fritsch - Hogan - Garlett
Foll: Gawn - Tyson - Salem

will be interesting to see what Goody does with Wagner.  He has started both JLT games, not that means much I guess.

but I wouldn't be surprised if he is in the 22 on sunday at the expense of a Bugg/Stretch type. with Vince playing on a wing

Wagner might be ok as he can play somewhat tall and short and is moving the ball a little better than last year.

He has damaged ribs, doesn't he (Garlett)? Whilst some of his JLT pick-ups/intercepts were great, these were one-handed in the main as if he was protecting his left side. Just an impression...

Agree with this, Dees11, but I think Jeffy is a little sore at present and poor kicking is rather easily ameliorated if given attention, for Frosty.

It's reasonably clear judging by the narrative coming from the club that Oliver is likely to be right for round 1 while T Mac is likely to miss so would be posting our round 1 teams to reflect that.

I think it will look something like this:

B: Hibberd, O McDonald, Jetta

HB: Vince, Lever, Hunt

C: Salem, Jones, Lewis

HF: Fritsch, Hogan, Neal-Bullen

F: Hannan, Pedersen, Garlett

R: Gawn, Oliver, Petracca

I: Melksham, Harmes, Tyson, Brayshaw

E: Bugg, Frost, Stretch, Wagner

Garlett not selected ?

DeeSpencer lost the plot when he changed his username.

Who are you taking out?

I think it's pretty safe to assume that ANB and Melksham are locks on the forward flanks.

I can't leave out Fritsch. I know we've only seen glimpses but he's a potential match up nightmare and his kicking inside 50 looks very valuable.

I can't leave out Hannan. He can swap in to the midfield to replace Petracca so we keep a burst of speed in the guts and he has the knack of kicking clutch goals. He's stronger this year which should mean better tackling and hard to move from over or under the ball.

I can leave out Bugg, but he's the fittest player on the list and when others are cramping late in round 1 he'll be gut running to provide an option or chase an opponent. I think I'm 55/45 on which one I'd pick and if Garlett is training at a high level and did all the right things at Casey on the weekend I'd pick him, but my inclination is he's not exactly busting the door down for his spot and fitness and effort matter in round 1.

Pedersen is the weak link hasn't got the engine to play as a key forward.  I doubt he would get to enough contests or present as a target. He is the type of player best suited to the interchange.

So who's at FF then if T Mac misses as expected?

Average age: 24.9 Average games: 87.8
Less than 50 games: 10
More than 100 games: 7
Debutantes: 1

Missing: Viney TMcDonald

Bugg is a handy player, but his foot skills leave me cold.

Garlett is a regular 40 goal small forward with speed.  He creates goals out of opportunities others can't.  His speed and crumbing ability is a must have for me.  I also think his ability to pressure and harass in the forward 50 is better than Bugg's.

Given the choice of Bugg or Garlett I'm taking Garlett every day of the week.

For me, Bugg is competing with a defensive forward like Neal-Bullen for a game.  Or the likes of Melksham.  They have him covered.

I too like Hannan and Fritsch and won't be leaving either out for Bugg.

He had the engine to carry our ruck stocks when the others were out, but doesn't have the engine to play as a tall forward ?

He's not in my ideal best 22, but he's easily fit enough for a forward role until McDonald returns.

Pedersen is in the best nick of his career.  Not sure how you've come to this conclusion after he rucked entire games for us when Gawn went down.

Pedo in a forward or relieving ruck position is in my best 22, but off the bench across a game. He is a mountain that could interrupt Tom Hawkins in a significant way if placed to kill on the backline. I don't see Hawkins hipping Cam very effectively, not beating him in the air because Tom seldom leaves the ground and for once, Cam is just as big, more mobile, better marking the ball and 'friggin attitudinal when elbowed, as Tom gets away with so often. Go Pedo!

That's fine, we disagree.

Pedersen, Gawn, Hogan, McDonald is one tall too many.

And if he plays it won't be in the backline.

Well, we are just two more sleeps away from our first side being named and on Thursday the extended interchange means we won't have a complete answer, but I have listed my emergencies here.

I have assumed that O-Mac hasn't been suddenly trained up to replace his injured brother at CHF, which means Frosty is our emerg and Pedo gets a game.

Lewis and ANB sound like they are right to go, but I have left out Oliver, who I can't imagine we will risk now.

Defenders (7)

Jetta, O.McDonald (Frost), Hibberd, Hunt, Lever, Vince, Lewis (Wagner)

Emerg: Wagner

Mids (8)

Injured: Viney, Oliver

Gawn, Petracca, Brayshaw, Harmes, Jones, Tyson, Salem, Stretch

Emerg: Maynard

Forwards (7)

Injured: T.Mac

Hogan, Pedersen, Garlett, ANB (Fritsch), Hannan, Melksham, Bugg

Emerg: Fritsch

If Bugg was to play ( I wouldn't ) will it be so silly to put him on Ablett just to annoy the &^$% ????

Ablett would take him to the cleaners, apart from anything else he's still too fast for Bugg.

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.
