Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

2017 Player Reviews: # 1 Jesse Hogan

Demonland

Recommended Posts

NIGHTMARE

Jesse Hogan's nightmare battles throughout the 2017 season have been well-documented. They began with a two match suspension incurred in Round 2 but worsened a few weeks later when he lost his father Tony to cancer and then soon after, was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He recovered in good time but broke his collarbone in the game against North Melbourne in Hobart and then suffered a hamstring injury in the final game against Collingwood.

All clubs rely not only on the class of their top players but in their capacity to be consistent performers on the field. That Hogan was only able to provide a few glimpses, the highlight being his six goals in Round 22 against Brisbane, provides one of the pointers as to why Melbourne failed so narrowly in its quest to make the finals for the first time in more than a decade.

The Demons will be hoping for better luck with their key power forward who has the strength and power to also provide drive further down the ground as well and that he gets his opportunity to display his prodigious talents in 2018.

2015 showed how good a footballer he will be.  2016 and 2017 have shown what a strong person he is.

Has shown phenomenal resilience to overcome injuries, health issues and loss.  Its now time to rest his young body and soul.

Comeback in 2018 to take the Dees onward and upward.

Can't recall an player going through a season like it. We are no closer to assessing how good he will or won't be as a player, but what we can now confidently say is the character of the man is a good one.

My heart goes out to him, I hope his 2018 is magnificent because he is deserving of something going right for him.

I think he will be a good player but he has plenty to work on if he is going to ride to be an A grader.

Could not agree more with this. Is best when he works over his opponent and then beats them on the lead or reads the flight to outmanoeuvre. Too much time wrestling and trying to get the ball over the back early in the year and last. his haul late in  the season  showed how he should go about it. We need to get a seriously good forward craft coach for him and Weids.

It's clearly an AFL Conspiracy to get West Coast back into contention - and with the collusion of the Crows.

Sceptical?

Then ask yourself this - why did the Crows lie down against the Eagles? Because this gave them the chance to tip us out of the finals.

Forget the Swans, we are the team Adelaide fears above all and with the AFL's imprimatur they tanked! and then that free kick in the last few seconds of last night's game? All to clear a path for a West Coast v Adelaide GF.

Trade him for Dixon, Ben Brown or Daniher.

Jesse only missed three games between 2015 and 2016. Also, aside from the obvious, I think you'll find that Jesse only missed two to three games this year because of injury.

He and Gawn are our big match winners. If they both fire consistently during the season such that week after week they are both in the top ten on the ground we will have a great season.

It is becoming obvious that his position is now CHF wherever that is these days so I expect his annual goal tally to be around 30 which still leaves that perennial question... "who will kick our goals."

How many times did we hit 100 points ... not often if I recall.

He is contracted until the end of 2019 so at least we will not be consumed by contract discussions in 2018.

Good luck Jesse ... you certainly deserve some !

he's had a tough year personally so i'll be kind but he needs to improve his defensive pressure. He doesn't apply any at all. And he needs to stop staging for free kicks in marking contests. Also his kicking for goal needs a lot of work.

so whilst he's had a bad year personally i think he needs a strong pre-season otherwise he may lose his spot in the team if pederson continues to bust his arse and perform for us.  If hogan learns to play with defensive intent then i'll forgive him for everything else

Why? He's a contested marker. Opponents try to avoid going one on one because 99/100 he smokes them. I'd rather him keep at it.

Unfortunately we only saw glimpses of Jesse's best football this year. This was partly due to self inflicted issues (eg the suspension), but mostly due to run a misfortune that you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy. Hopefully he has combined all the setbacks his career will encounter into one year, and he has a clear run next season.

He will be a star, and if he can get his mind and body right, we will be much better for it next season.  At the very worst you know he will take the opposition's best defender each week, which creates some freedom for those around him. At his best he is a match winner, in a team that has precious few of them.

One of Goody's biggest battles next year I suspect.

Our most talented player with Watts and as with Petracca has an air of arrogance that we all love and the side needs. But, off-field issues aside, his lack of second efforts are a huge issue.

He's naturally the fittest bloke at the club, yet it's almost impossible to get him to work hard the minute the ball hits the ground. Instead his hand go up in a gesture of disgust to the umps and the ball and his opponent are already long gone.

At some point Goody will have to decide if it's time for tough-love - just as he has shown to Wattsy.

In a perfect world he won't need to do that and Hoges will naturally be fired up by the fact that Joe D and Ben Brown have gone way past him in the best young forward rankings.

Really? I see him much better when he leads and moves his opponent around. Just starting in the square and calling for it isn't his best to imo.

I trust that this is tongue in cheek. Anyway, even if you were serious, are those guys available, and if so would they be traded anyway?

I'd like to see Hoges model his game on Tex Walker, not Daniher or Brown. We need him playing authoratively rather than reactively ie moving up the ground and being #1 creator of goal assists like Tex is in the AFL . He has a good kick on him when he gets his confidence up and his footy brain will have him punting a 40-50m pass that sets Watts, Garlett or TMAC into a positive goal scoring position. Him and Watts in that tandem role are when our forward line is at its most damaging.

We dont necessarily need 60-70 goals, we need him being the forward line General that moves up the ground and dictates where  our forwards move to. Which I think suits his personality more, he should be hanging his expectations on positive team-play and nothing is more team play than goal assists. If he hangs his expectations on taking marks and kicking goals, well it's not going to work out for him on many an occasion throughout a match.

If we're playing TMAC forward, we only want him kicking set shots not having to link up and find a player forward with his disposal.

With enough game time and no injuries, he will get there.

In summary Jesse needs to be in the top 2-5 players for goal assists in the entire AFL next year.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
