Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I follow a few of the fitness staff on instagram, more so for training tips and to get an insight into how AFL athletes prepare than to peer into what the dees players are doing.

However, this morning one of them had Spencer, Trengove and watts in the Instagram story.

Good to see Watts in there working in his off-season, bad to see him just doing bicep curls. Curls will only help him look better in his shorts rather than becoming a better AFL athlete. Maybe I missed all of the functional stuff he did prior... but he looked pretty keen on making the guns bigger.

Blimey wattsy copes some strange criticism

Let’s assume Jack sees the light and decides to stay and, to paraphrase Roos, decides to be great, what does he need to do immediately to start earning back the respect and trust of the coach, FD and LG?

1. shut up

2. come back to pre season in great nick. the best nick he's ever been for pre season

3. do extras. Copy stretch or one of the other good trainers

4. be the last one off the track every time

5. self imposed ban on the grog or the parties or some beloved activity to send a message to his teammates that he's serious

Jnrmac - for what it's worth, I argued until I was blue in the face that letting Junior McDonald go would be an absolutely disaster for this club.

And it was.

Many here strongly disagreed at the time - 'too old, too many soft tissues, need to get games into the more talented kids' etc. Clubs don't always get these decisions right, even with the best intentions.

That said, I think we have a quality administration here now. The Watts issue has been their first big wrinkle for me. The club may ultimately prove to be absolutely right on it, although it has the hallmarks of decisioning made on the run at this point in time.

Isn’t this a normal blokey thing to do?

Now this makes sense.

I don't know how good your mail is but this is plausible because it means the club didn't initially want to trade him and that desire was instigated at his reaction to a negative exit interview that stopped short of telling him he was going to be traded.

I just cannot imagine - if the club had decided he had to go since 'The Bondi Trip' - that he wouldn't be told at his exit interview.

Agreed.

It's more plausible that his negative reaction to the hard truths combined with his poor pre-season preparation and the Bondi Trip while injured, all combined into "he can get stuffed with that sort of attitude we are sick of him".

If Watts doesn't want to take the advice on board after 9 mediocre seasons where he has completely under performed, than he never ever will change.

Personally I don't care if he stays or goes (as long as we get a good return for him if he goes), but if he stays he better seriously change his attitude because if he spends 2018 in the VFL he will be worth nothing at the trade table next year!

I'd go to Geelong and say we'll give you Watts and 35 for Cam Guthrie. Promise him midfield time. Hasn't been given much with the inclusion of Dangerfield. He's got some speed and good around stoppages. Before Danger he looked like becoming a real top-of-the-line mid. Lack of minutes have cost him IMO. Demon supporter as a kid, out of contract at end of 2018.

Must say it would be sad to see JW gone. I believe he made big steps last year before injury got the best of him. Endeavour? He was a ruck, midfielder, forward and back man for 7 weeks in the middle of the year and without him, we would have been stuffed. Wait and see. Would be happy if we swapped him for Ac Chee and a fourth rounder.

I agree that he shouldn't be criticised for training during this period, especially as it's a troubling time.

That said, and he might be doing them, core exercises like squats, deadlifts, and bench presses are far better than isolation exercises.  Bicep curls are almost a waste of time.

I agree that he maybe should have gone on another year Ron, but he was going on 36 at the time.

How long were we going to keep him for? 2, 3 more years?

Where we failed was not having a plan to get him straight onto the coaching staff.

Given he came something like 21st in the B&F, I would suggest he has scored poorly for not doing on the field what was expected of him. But to be able to do so, he needs to understand why he's not doing it.

Unless we get a young future champ like a zac jones type forget it( if Jack succumbed to being pushed out ) shuffle  of picks may be required but there is the value in my opinion.

City we don't need more meat and potatoe types to replace Jack.  He was the finish, the icing on the outside if you like.  We have an abundance of these types and you only need so many in finals.  He was inneffective and shown up badly in his last match anyway.  A solid player but not what we need more of.

Thanks nsfm.  I don't defend or take sides with any player/s i just call it as I see it. In the past, up until about 2 years ago, I was a big doubter and critic of Watts and was copping it from everyone who were more Pro or completely sold so go figure.

Even if Watts had his head firmly up where the sun doesn't shine on some of these issues, the home truths in his exit interview shouldn't have been such a surprise to him.

It still wreaks of being poorly handled.

That said, I suspect the club may have sought to curtail his lifestyle going forward (pre-season and beyond), something that he is not wishing to do in circumstances where he possibly think his on-field performance has been good enough.

No evidence though. Just a gut feel.

Since that time, Watts has had to decide whether he wants to be great. At the MFC. Or elsewhere.

Ron this line of "deciding to be great".  Sorry but you can certainly give everything of yourself and decide to be fully committed and give it your best and maybe improve to your best "optimal" output.  This might result in a player improving their standing and becoming say sub par,  ordinary, a bit above average, very good or in some rare cases "great" ... but at this level you can't just flick a switch and suddenly become "great" just because someone (be it Ronald Dale or anyone) suggested that's what happens when you decide!

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
