Yeah I think he is gone to ET.

But we need to get the right return in a trade. If that doesnt happen I think he will stay. This trade needs to benefit the Dees. We do hold the Magic Key and need to use it to our advantage.

I am not fussed if he is traded or stays. I want the best outcome for the club.

The fact that a Mod came on here and clearly explained  what needed to be said, to cool the head was, in my opinion, quite helpful, and i got expelled from my school so i don't kiss bums.

I looked through The Tigers GF team thoroughly as well, and there were two blokes missing there that i am afraid he (Jack) resembled a combination of. One now played for Hawthorn and one now for GWS. I think i am being unkind there, but that is the way it is.

I will say again that the season hasn't started and the way our game will be played will be frenetic and it will be up to the receivers to get where the ball drops, just as much as the delicacy of the delivery to them, only more so. So speed will be the essence........

This is very true. I've mentioned previously that we need to take a look at the way players are being conditioned and returned from rehab. Misson and his team seems to go under the radar but I'm not convinced they are doing a great job

No humour in this post Gonz. I read some earlier posts that mentioned Watts was a scapegoat, the assertion being that Goodwin and the club are somehow shifting the blame onto him for us not making the finals. There seems to be a lot of tin foil hats on around here. 

Unfortunately I don’t do serious very well.

I know of two that are not happy namely Hogan and Gawn.  Doesn't mean there aren't others. They have openly expressed their disappointment. I bet you Jeffy probably doesn't think its a great idea as well. Hogan Garlett and Watts provided a strong team in attack.

Perhaps my last contribution to this discussion.  I have watched Jack Watts both during games and at training since he joined the club.  I was at his debut when no-one flew the flag on his behalf when he got his first touch and right through to the end of 2016 when I moved O/S.  I have seen him run selflessly week after week and watched him being ignored by his team mates.  And wondered why the coaches didn't instruct others to honour leads.  I have been amazed that his loyalty to the club hasn't wavered and wondered why, unlike another No.1 pick, he didn't tell the MFC to GAGF.

I still believe that the club will be poorer IN EVERY REGARD if he goes.  To me, it is a sad indictment of all (except Roos) his coaches both line and senior that they haven't been able to help him reach his potential.  Macca may be great with the kids but he too has let JW down.  If he does leave, I hope that he continues to disappoint but I know in my gut that he's a great player and will rise to the top with the right coaching.

I have watched this team since 1957 and genuinely believe JW has the wherewithal to be one of the greats.  Goodwin is simply wrong and everyone will suffer for his poor judgement.

The brains trust in the midfield  are in a big minority on this topic. They cannot see what's happening here. Tell me this, How is getting an untried low draft pick going to take the place of an experienced and skilled footballer going to move us up the ladder? Even if he was a potential star he ,as a 17 year old,  won't be much use to us next year. It all takes time and we don't have that luxury. So how can anyone say we will improve next season?

If Watts loves the club so much and wants to stay, then refuse a trade and stay. There's one way to prove the coaches are wrong, bust your arse on the training track, force your way into the firsts and play to your full potential, simple.

Personally I hope he has the heart, and balls, to stay and prove the footy department wrong.

I wouldn’t imagine it being the most comfortable situation to be in where you are not only put up for trade/told to explore your options/being pushed out but then standing your ground and saying “I’m not going”. Puts you at odds with those in charge. 

I still really want the club to play a hard game with him, have a target minimum in mind and if it’s not satisfied we keep him. The way Mahoney spoke the other day has me thinking it’s back on the table. 

Would make for a fairly awkward return to the club for all involved though.

He will be 27 when next season starts.  He has shown to be a handy 3rd forward. That's it.

'One of the greats' is a laughable statement...  in fact I can only assume your post was satire.

 

Edit - I respect your support of the club over such a  long period, dont wanna make it sound like I'm having a pot shot at you.  But you're way off base on Watts.

I'd be confident it's not just a "Will whatever the club gets for Watts make the team better?" in isolation decision.

It's safe to assume Watts must be in ball park 500-600k. The salary cap relief his exit would bring, and subsequent opportunity to recruit or secure existing players, would be a massive factor.

I keep drawing parallels to the corporate world, but if you get a big pay rise, the scrutiny and expectation rise with it. You can't be happy to take the cash, then be surprised when people more harshly asses the value for money you represent and wonder if they can get more benefit for the same outlay through other means.

Footy clubs are different to a corporate environment in many ways of course, but there are cold business decisions to be made on salary cap and list management to balance with the culture and unity impacts. There's never a formula to get to the the right answer with the balance, it's a lot of gut feel.

3rd forward seems like such a derivative label. Tom Lynch at Adelaide is a 3rd tall, and yet he's one of their most important link up players. I think Jack Watts has shown the potential to play in this up ground role that dictates all inside 50 movement with his skillful disposal, goal assisting. When he moved into the ruck against Geelong, it really felt like it was JW vs Geelong. He has that potential to be a genuine superstar but it's just so infrequent. I back Goodwin to make the right call.

One thing that i'd like to see if JW stays, is him being told he is not going to play as a deep forward or high half forward anymore, but play on the ball as an outside mid, or on the wing. Just build up the tank over summer and turn yourself into a player that expends every ounce of gruelling effort to become some kind of distributing outside mid. If he gets it on the edge of a pack from Gawn/Oliver > Viney > JW, then we know he can be damaging and can become a player that provides the perfect link up disposal to a CHF Hogan or TMAC deep.  

Is it too late to reimagine his role in the team if he stays?
