Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

If that is true red then Connors is a disgrace

It isnt his business he is there to look after Jacks interests and obviously doing a pretty poor job of it

Jack should sack him! Those comments do nobody any good and makes Connors look like a real tool

Recently there was an Open Mike that featured Paul Connors. He came across as a particularly decent human being. Afterwards I was speaking to a friend who is a relatively high profile AFL journo and he said that Connors was well respected in the industry.

He has around 100 AFL players on his books inc Hodge, Nic Nat, Dangerfield, our own Daisy, Michael Hibberd, Melksham, Trac, Michael Hurley, Tom Lynch, Andrew McGrath, Josh Kennedy, Sidebottom Chris Judd and Dimma. He also has Josh Kelly who he recommended to stay at GWS for the success. Success trumps the dollar (particularly when you are already getting paid well).

Connors is a good operator. You would imagine there must be a fair bit of angst between parties if his comments are as Redleg reported

The angst on the handling of this is misplaced.

How do you trade a highly popular player with two years on his contract without being transparent as to the reasons why ?

You may not like the actual decision, but the club had no choice but to be candid once it was made.

Making up bs while Watts was touring other club facilities would have led to more derision than what's here.

If some see that as Watts being thrown under the bus so be it.  I'm yet to see a credible alternative posted, but it's possible I've missed it.

I got to know him quite well when our boys were at primary school together  and he's a good bloke, albeit with a healthy ego.

He probably says more than he should on occasions, but he's most definitely a decent fellow.

I've had enough of how this club has publicly put Jack down, all year.  Warranted or not no player deserves to hear his captain and coach regularly chastise him in public.

If Jack stays against Goodwin's wishes, I can only see the diatribe from him and Jones to continue. It may even intensify.  Very difficult to perform in a toxic environment.

So, I would like Jack to go.

Hold your head high Jack for having survived a toxic club for most of the nine years.  As a human being you deserve better than what mfc and its supporters can give you.

Get out while you can Jack. image.png.52cbb72f666d8b082f1df1cc21b140e0.png  Go where you will be appreciated and where you are supported and 'set up for success'.

Dont talk nonsense he's not the first and he won't be the last. Off the top of my head Gary Ablett jnr, Stevie J and Michael Walters were all publicly criticised for not meeting standards.  Two of those were banished from training with the senior squads for extended periods.

Each one of them raised the bar and became far more professional in their preparation and attitude.

Don't for one second think Jack wasn't previously given ultimatums in terms of what is expected and he would have been told in his 2016 exit interview how he was expected to return.

Well we all know he didn't meet those requirements which show he was content with his 2016 season which whilst his best wasn't the best someone like him should achieve. Several of our players were interviewed in the pre season and asked about Jack and they all towed the party line stating Jack hadn't met the team standards.

The club knows his potential as do other clubs and despite what some delusional Deminlanders think the club won't let him go for peanuts.

Goodwin and the FD have finally drawn a line in the sand.

Jack knows exactly where he stands now

The Club wants Jack out and will get the best pick they can. Competition for him is hotting  up. The Pies, Swans, Port and the Cars apparently so far. Many Tiger and Pies supporters today calling in on SEN asking how Watts can get to their Clubs. He is in demand and unfortunately given a second chance at a bigger Club than the MFC, is likely to be a star and fulfil his potential. It could be at the Pies with his good mate, Howe. That would be horrible and a pity it has not worked out at the Dees.

Perhaps the FD were keeping it in house until Jack Watts decided to go and do an interview about how he wants to stay. None of us really know exactly what has transpired, but I'm pretty sure Jack would have known by then about what the FD's plans were. Either way it's irrelevant, the FD have a higher standard of what Jack's output should be versus what Jack does. If you listen to Josh Mahoney's interview yesterday on SEN I think it's clear to all what the situation is. I don't understand the angst. If an employer wants a higher standard of output from an employee and they don't get it they are entitled to move that employee on. That's pretty much what is happening and Jack isn't or doesn't want to listen. The ball is in his court either way.

Yes, but you don't expect the employer to blab about it all over the media or on social media in the case of you not being a footballer.

Even if Jack puts out his viewpoint you don't have to answer back, you take the higher ground.

We (fans & public) don't have to be clear on what the situation is...Jack does and that's why they have end of season interviews which I would expect to be confidential.

Of course if Watts is seen touring other clubs the MFC has to say something.  But it could have said something like "The Club and Jack Watts have decided to explore options other than him completing his current contract at the Demons."  Say no more, let others who want to speculate on why to speculate. No need to list Jack's faults (hardly a good bargaining position since making it clear he is 99% gone is information even well-informed clubs may not know for sure).  Just refuse to comment further.   Listing his faults publically is not good people management.  If the club wants to send a message to the rest of the players, they can easily do so in private.  The message sent now is that if you don't live up to expectations you can expect to be publically humiliated.   Now some may think that is a good management style to motivate the team. I don't.

Oh I disagree wholeheartedly and obviously so too does the footy department.

We can go back and forth on the rest of the post but we both have our positions which obviously aren't going to change and I've said enough on this matter so I'll leave it there.

Connors can't help himself and I know this first hand. Not Judd's grandmother stuff.

That's fine, we can leave it there. I do think we would agree on more than you think and we are largely talking past each other:

Watts isn't providing a level of commitment expected of a 9 year veteran, he is a player of certain talents but not key to the team, and the coaching staff have a desire to remove a headache and create an asset. The FD has been inelegantly vocal with the situation, and Watts has obstinately defended himself against the criticisms.

The devil is in those details of course, but I think that would be a fair summation of Land's opinion on this situation.

Listing his faults publically is not good people management

Where have his faults been listed? It's all fairly generic stuff about "getting the most out of himself" etc.

As for the public humiliation part, well, if you don't want public humiliation, don't participate in a highly mediatised sport. Getting  dropped to the seconds is nothing if not a public humiliation, as is getting delisted, not to mention the parading before the court of public opinion of every player who commits an off-field indiscretion. It comes with the job. In the grand scheme of things, saying "We need more from Jack" is pretty tame.

This talk of him going to the Pies is sickening. For one we have a terrible track record when trading with them, and recently discarded players seen to improve there (though I have nothing against Dunn or Howe). Plus there’s the history between Jack himself and the Pies, I’d just about vomit seeing him wear black and white.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
