Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

On the highlights package you would suspect he will be well gone before our first pick.

In the BigFooty mock draft we drafted him at pick 32 (there was an earlier Academy bid that was matched - Ballenden I think). Jordan Houlihan was ours at pick 30.

Going to put my 2 cents in here.

Have loved Joel Garner for 2 years now. Really great kick, good speed, good decision maker, natural leader. He was in top 10 calculations coming into the year and did not get enough of the ball this year. He will fall down the draft order, and I think that he is a great fit for us. We have accumulated accumulators (Oliver, Viney, Trac, Brayshaw, Hibberd etc) and having a guy who gets 15 touches of a half back or wing and goes at 90% by foot complements what we have really well.

James Worpel is one I am warming to now. He is an inside beast, AFL ready, whilst plays like Oliver, he kicks instead of handballs. There is a really nice piece on him today on AFL.com about his year and how his contested ball, tackling, clearances have been outstanding, his decision making has been second rate. However, his kick to handball ration is 7-3 which insane for an inside mid. Work on bringing that back to 1-1 and take his time a little more with his kicking, his 20m burst, his hunt for the football could really add good depth to our midfield.

Hamish Brayshaw is one I wanted as a rookie last year and I wanted as a rookie this year (we have no spots) so bring him on down with our mid 40's pick. Ooozes leadership,  is a great kick of the football, great overhead contested mark, clutch with his goal kicking. The knock on him is his speed, he has had a bad run with injuries, but really good decision maker. Is he what we have a lot of (Melksham, ANB, Stretch, AVB, Hannan)? Absolutely, but this is a fairly vanilla draft and he is a low risk option, like his two brothers, and will play 100 Andrew Swallow B+ games for whatever club drafts him. Also, Melbourne invited him to the combine and are one of four clubs (Syd, North, Collingwood) to show interest in him.

As for our first pick in the draft, I'd say best available of the top 20 that drop. Personally, I think that might be Matthew Ling. I think O'Brien, Petrticcle, Richards and Moore go higher than expected (high risk high reward) whereas Ling is a quick player with good skills off half back who is a nice player without having the potential to be a top player in the comp. Thus, think he'll slide.

Looking forward to seeing 4 new Demons soon!

AFL Mock Draft has us taking Callum Coleman Jones. A huge unit!

Mick Ablett must not do much list analysis before he runs with these suggestions.

In an earlier show after we had brought in Lever he said that, given we love Lever so much, Oscar Claravino would be a good pick up as a similar player.

Now he's got us taking a ruckman to play at Casey for the next 8 years behind Gawn?

Have only seen these highlights.....does anyone who has seen more of him (Callum Coleman Jones)  think he could make that missing forward / ruck back up position, rather than just a back up ruck (who may not get much opportunity hopefully if Max stays fit and in form)?

Callum Coleman-Jones. You would actually struggle to make up a more Melbourne name

Ronald-Oxenblood-Tulip was a good Demon name, too....

For a bit unit, he actually gets a lot of ground ball. What he does next with it makes me cringe.

No thanks

we have two project ruckmen already plus the Weed as another development project:

Target is simple.... rank the outside mids and it is best available when 29 comes around.

What about with later picks?

Do you pass on a player who is better than someone you already have in that position?

If yes, would that not make a bit of a mockery of drafting, unless you were so bad in other areas that it was essential that they be fixed first?

Are we in that position?

One thing that is known about the draft is that the inside mids (contested players) are easier to get a handle on...and you're more likely to get a decent player from this group.

The outside players are where the early busts are more likely to be. Think someone like Toumpas for example.

I think by ranking & focussing on outside mids we are more likely to fail.

Pick best available in the draft and trade for weaknesses.

Really hoping Zac Bailey makes it to our picks. He’s a perfect fit for us IMO. Not only is he quick, but he fits the competitive type that Goodwins panel is assembling/developing. He’s great with contested ball but has the pace the break through/away from packs and could play outside earlier in his career. Not sure he will last to our pick but I’m crossing me fingers he winds up in red and blue!

Cannot agree with this. How many years has Tom McDonald been in the system? 7 years, yet his decision making and kicking ability have barely improved

Wouldn't mind Coleman-Jones at our pick in the 40s.  The one thing he's got is good hands below his knees, something that can be hard to teach.  Making better decisions and improving your kicking is easier to teach, so he would be worth a look.

Paul Johnson was 6'6" and good below his knees but that was about it, at AFL level. He tended to dominate the next level down winning a JJ Liston for Sandy I think.

no problem with that theory except in the "development area"

You cannot carry that many "development" players

Nate Jones has improved his decision making and kicking considerably over his career. Different type of player to Coleman-Jones though. The point being is that equating one player to the other doesn't work

Coleman-Jones looks very much like a young Gary Dempsey, of Footscray fame. Great o/head mark, fine low possessions, too; keen to get the ball and handpasses somewhat brilliantly. Forget the kicking - that type of feed-out pack player will learn to kick quickly, akin to Clarry at the moment. Would be an excellent pickup for the Dees.

Barely?  I'd disagree with that.  He makes the odd poor decision from time to time, but more often than not when he's not trying to take a huge risk he can hit a target.  He has been able to improve over time, although it would be nice to see him improve even more.

True, and I always hoped PJ would make it for us.  We have a better development system in place now and I'd back them to do a better job with someone like Coleman-Jones.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
