Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Not too sure if this post is up already.

FD are starting to plan for 2018.

My understanding is that we need a minimum of 3 free spots.

Definite outs:

Lumumba

Contract ending 2017:

VandenBerg, Kennedy, JKH, Hulett, Mitch King, White, Tim Smith, Trengove

Have no idea how Garland got 3 years. Contract ends 2018.

I'm thinking: Lumumba, Kennedy, Hulett and White

Trengove might get rookie listed or traded for a late round pick.

Thoughts?

Too soon? Trap beat me too it.

Maybe wait until we are a few games out from seasons end. Who knows what changes between now and then.

Agreed Robbie57.

Normally this thread pops up when our season is a write-off with nothing to look forward to except the draft and the trade period.

We are still well and truly in this season.  Lets save the delist/trades/draft threads for another few months please.

We still have a lot too look forward to!  Go Dees.

Why is this too soon? Are any of the thoughts which are posted here going to impact on the team, the future of any players, our chances of playing finals?

What this thread is really about is a current assessment of a part of the list. The bottom part. If we were just ranking players instead of  talking about delisting how would that be different?

As Nasher said, its interesting to compare thoughts at this stage, with thoughts as we move further into the season. Finally the FD makes the decisions irrespective of what is said here.

Yeah, that's the question I begged in the last post...

You don't draft talls and turf them after two years... unless you made a Prenderghastly decision with the pick...

well it's possible, as we have seen

but i think hulett will probably get an extension (because he is a young tall) unless he really stinks it up in the 2nd half of the year

I don't reckon Hulett will make it.

It's never too soon. I start thinking about it before round 1 usually. It's fun to see how my own view changes as the season unfolds.

It's a footy discussion board. It could be right after draft day and it's not too soon. Some people like how footy works and are interested in list management, and want to follow it 12 months of the year. That's what this board is all about.

KP player who showed plenty last year. At worst will get Rookied.

Would be surprised to see Spencer stay.

Add in Lumumba as a certainty, and Trengove as a near certainty. I imagine we'll also cut our losses with Garland. And Mitch White is looking shaky to retain a rookie spot at the moment (two years up - how does it work if a player was elevated at some stage?).

That's four seniors gone from the main list. And the quality of our delistings is getting better each year. Might be in for a few surprises. We also haven't traded a decent player out for years - so we're probably unaccustomed as fans to expect such.

This is also Goody's first full year at the helm - even Roos was somewhat conservative first-off with his delistings. I think Simon will be keen to make his mark (in his own mould, or the Demons 'brand') - and anyone not showing enough competitive spirit or not daring enough might be facing the axe. A quality player such as Stretch might still not have the desired moxy in Simon's mind. And I've made my point on Watts.

Tea leaves: the footy dept. see something in JKH that escapes me and may stay. Hullet perhaps in trouble. Kent on the serious outer. ANB and Bugg safe. Kennedy a bit of a mystery. Johnstone really not adjusting as expected. Maynard and J. Smith are liked (and probably T. Smith also). McKenna - who knows?

My random prediction: another 8-9 turned-over from the primary list with a few surprises in store.

I'd be happy to give Hulett another year, it's not like we are blessed with key position depth, and he has shown at least as much as Weideman (less talent, but much more heart). Presumably King stays as well, although he should be developing on the rookie list. Not sure about Keilty, but he is not causing much grief on the rookie list.

The fact that none of White, Trengove and Kennedy have played this season suggests that all are in big trouble. Trengove is the only one I have any time for, but the coach clearly doesn't rate him. JKH won't make it. VDB is average and constantly injured. Tim Smith is average and his age counts against him. Who knows if McKenna can play, but we can't afford to carry injury prone small forwards (regardless of contract). And finally we get to see the back of that toxic weed, Lumumba.

That makes 6 senior players and 2 rookies, before potential trades and retirements.

Pedersen clearly stays. Spencer has the next two weeks to save his career. Big question mark over Vince. Happy to trade Kent for a bag of chips. Neal-Bullen can stay.

Goodwin is a younger coach, not old school at all. I reckon we might see a talented player up for trade in order to get what we need. Not sure who, but maybe even someone like Tyson or Vince, even though I prefer them both to stay. But to get some outside class we might need to offer something up.

White, Trengove and Kennedy look gone, and Garland shaky.

I can't see a big trade period coming up in terms of numbers, but can see the possibility of a big in or out happening.

Surely, they saw something to draft him and having played only 5 quarters of AFL football,  it would be amazing if the FD thinking is, he has no future at this stage. On top of that, as you mentioned he is a rookie. As for his age he's a lot younger than Podzy was when recruited by Geelong. At this stage he gets my vote.

Wayne, surely you don't imagine King is anywhere near taking the Senior ruck position in 2018 if Gawn was injured again!

If Spencer goes the club will definitely recruit a mature and mature bodied ruckman. Maybe if the FD thinks we are a real chance in 2018,  they will do that even if Spencer stays.

I reckon they'll try to keep Spencer, even though the one year contract makes it look like that's not the case. His early season and pre season form he looked like a new player. And by golly is he ever needed.

What is Spencer going to say when we offer him another one-year contract with the off-chance he might get a game vs. a three year-offer somewhere else with more opportunity and likely more cash? Spanks for the memories.

I suspect ol Spencil at crossroads. We'll have to offer more than a year if we want his services.

As you allude id bet someone has some 3 year scrip at the ready.

I can't see Spencer being offered a 3 year contract anywhere else but I guess stranger things have happened.

He's a depth ruckman at best...

Pulled the list from the old contracts thread and checked with Big Footy's lists as well:

Cant afford to lose
Stretch - sign for 3 years
Salem - sign for 3 years
Weiderman - sign for 3 years
Vince - 1 year deals over 30, keep 'em coming Bern
King - I think this will be a 2 year deal, quite low salary.

Question Mark
Vandenberg - injuries have been unkind but we know what he can do and we think the FD like him, so re-sign 2 year deal
Neal Bullen - He is watching his value rise. I think if he is best 25 at the end of the year he stays, if not he might look for a new home. I'd want to sign though
JKH - Still think there is something to work with there. Carlton were sniffing around last year, I wonder if we will let him go for more opportunity.
Trengove - I assume we offer him a 1 year contract but he goes to somewhere like Carlton on a 3 year deal for not much money as a free agent and we happily let him walk and hope he is able to have a good career as an in and under mid. We all go to the Carlton game and applaud him as he has 35 touches in a loosing team.
Spencer - At 28, he'd have to be looking for someone to offer him a first ruck position (GC, Syd) otherwise sign a couple of years on for us.
Keilty and Smith - all depends on how they have developed and what else is out there. Considering the reports we get out of the FD on these two, I'd expect they stay on the rookie list another year
Pedersen - I have no idea. He's been great and deserves another 1 year contract but is he going to be in the side come round 23?

Going?
White - hasn't played a senior game or been an emergency for an age. The recruitment of Lewis and Hibberd has really hurt his opportunities.
Hulett - I'd like to keep him as he is a big man and needs time to develop. You never know these things though.
Flip - Injuries are mean, but again, you wonder if he has shown enough to the FD
Lamumba

In contract but ???
Kennedy - surely he is looking to play more game time. Will he try at another club?
Kent - what has gone on here this year? Hopefully he is back in the 1's by the end of the year playing the football we know he can play
Garland - assume that he had a frontloaded deal so he is getting peanuts next year. Expect him to stay

A good and thorough analysis Dee Licious. Hard to disagree with the thrust of your post although I would have some different views around the edges. For example I would offer the Weed two years not three with a view to extending at the end of 2018 if he shows promise. So far this year he has gone backwards a little and therefore next year is a key development year. Same to a lesser extent with Stretch.

On JKH.... he is on the fringe but equally there are around three players in the present 22 who are also on the fringe. Are there better available elsewhere .. I don't know.

Spencer will definitely be offered a year but whether he is content I do not know. Perhaps the cost of retention is a two year contract.

Trengrove is gone unless a miracle occurs in the remaining part of the season.

Time for Garland to go and free up a place on the list perhaps.

Your excellent post underscores the multiple issues that must be considered in long term list management. Glad I don't have the job.

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.
