Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

it's been reported but that Mahoney has just walked in the AFL house why has Melbourne gone in what trades could there possibly be left to do

This is the part where our man swoops in with a last minute pick upgrade that has everyone who was saying he is useless,  now praising him as a genius........

*fingers crossed.

Correct.

based on 2017 results trade is

Crows - Gibbs, 22, 40 & 77

Blues 10, 16, 37 & 73.

When put like that it doesn't look such a steal for Carlton.

Blues get pick 10 and pick upgrades of several spots in each round spread over 2017/18.

When two first round picks are bandied about it looks quite dazzling, not so much when subsequent swaps are included as you have shown.

In total Adelaide haven't really given up that much, especially if Carlton finish bottom 2-4 and they  finish top 2-4 in 2018.  Juts pick 10 plus and later small downgrades.  They have kept the real jewel ie our 2018 first rounder to go with theirs in a very good draft year.

In saying that, the reason Adelaide may have buckled so willingly to Carlton (over this deal) is because of how much they bent us over with Lever. Adelaide have 2 first round picks next year (theirs and ours), so they wouldn't in their wildest dreams of ever thought we would hand over our first pick. They may have looked at it like that. Gibbs will improve them this year, and next year they still have two first round picks to use.

Or maybe 2 clubs were prepared to pay market value for the key player they targeted - that's the simpler explanation.

Gibbs is now a Crow - they paid two first rounders for him and a swap of other picks.

If anyone thinks we overpaid for Lever, then the Crows have wildly overpaid for Gibbs.  At least Lever is 21 - Gibbs is 29 and won't have the longevity that Lever will have for us.  Puts our deal in perspective.

Fair point. Carlton maxed out on that trade. Gibbs probably has two, maybe three good years left in him.

However, if we compare this to the Watts trade I feel like banging my head against a wall. Granted Watts doesn't have the track record like Gibbs, but I still think the MFC could have fought it out to acquire both of Port Adelaide's second round picks (#31 and #34). Especially considering we're paying for a fraction of his salary.

Dream on... he is probably just scouting around to see if anyone wants to pay unders or get overs on any last minute deals

Market value for a 29 year old isn't two first round draft picks. Gibbs may be a star, and may have been contracted, but paying two first round picks for him is way above market value.

When i was out fishing (in camera) with Gil and Houls, the word was that Carlton needed a hand to get up the Ladder more quickly. Looks like being a big player in this draft and will probably take a bit longer.....

Gibbs contracted (SOS expect extra value) Lever was uncontracted ... should have held firm like Carlton did and they have shown they would buckle

Carlton also would prefer not to lose Gibbs, so they could afford to play harder.  Unlike us with Watts.

Crows think Gibbs will help get them to a flag, hence why they paid top dollar.  We think Lever will, over time, help get us to a flag, hence why we paid top dollar.

On exposed form, it's unlikely that Balic will be a star, so we paid accordingly.

It's not that hard to comprehend.

Suns just traded into 1st round. Looks like we missed our chance

First round next year.

Suns gave up three first rounders, two of which were a bit higher than ours.  Plus they'll use that first rounder in the Lachie Weller trade, so in essence, Freo gets it.

The MFC wanted him out, there was more to it than we know.

It has to be that. We didn’t deal. The coach and FD wanted him out

We better recruit a good forward as a replacement!

Carlton had Adelaide over a barrel and reamed them.

All the above makes sense.

A certain trade Melbourne did this trade period doesn't.

There was always an element of risk for us to play too hard.  We got the deal done, and the people more knowledgable than you (i.e. the FD), were happy with what it cost.  The alternative was to play hardball and potentially miss getting one of hottest properties on the market.

Mahoney made mention that our offer to Lever was less than other offers he had received.  If Adelaide could get a better deal elsewhere, they would've done it.

Carlton bent the Crows over. If we had held out on the Lever deal we could have done the same. Unfortunately we think its a good idea to get trades done early rather than get a good deal

Imagine the uproar if we left it to the last minute.  We'd all be whinging that we haven't done anything this trade period.  Some would be asking if Mahoney has a pulse.

The only thing that would top that would be if we waited to get a better deal for Lever, only to find we missed him because Collingwood back-doored us because we flucked around so much.

Come on, Lever nominated us, he was more or less wearing the red and blue, we held all the aces, were in the absolute box seat and then we folded like little girls. Weak.

Not to mention the absolute ridiculoussness of telling the whole world we desperately wanted to offload Watts. No finesse or elegance in negotiating skills whatsoever

I'm sure a number of posters think that other clubs read newspaper articles to get intel on players from other teams.

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

    HIBERNATING by KC from Casey

When they locked up the rooms for summer at the end of last year’s football season, the rooms gathered cobwebs, the atmosphere became dense and the place developed a sleepy feel. They opened up the rooms to let Casey out to play on Sunday but the team was still hibernating and they missed the bulk of the opening quarter. By the time they worked out it was game on, their opponents from Box Hill had accumulated five goals and, if the game wasn’t over, it might as well have been. For a se

A FORK IN THE HAWK by George on the Outer

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side. But Melbourne’s empahtic 55-point win at the MCG on Saturday has truly put a fork in the Hawk and turned that history well and truly on its head. The Demons have now won nine of their last ten encounters with the other result, a draw.     And like a fork, it was the multi-pronged options that Melbourne had all across the ground.  It certainly helped that Hawthorn
