Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Or Hibberd.

Seriously, why does Hibberd not take every kick. He should be personally taking the ball off Vince to take the kick.

Because we need him to receive the kick out and drive us forward. He is a waste kicking it out.

Even with Hogan kicking 6, Pederson 3 and winning the ball around the ground, Clarrie gathering possessions and Hibberd cleaning up at the back we beat the bottom side by only 13 points on the way to perhaps play in finals.

I cannot recall one goal scored from team play that could be considered planned - it was mostly a collection of brilliant individual efforts (Petracca, Pederson x2, Hogan), accidents and a measure of good luck. They out ran us, moved the ball well to leading teammates, showed a planned style of play but were ultimately defeated by a poorly performing but overpowering force.

How many forward thrusts have to be embarrassingly squandered and even gifted to the opposition (think Hunt's precise pass to a defender after 2 bounces) before we realise that our game plan is holding us back? Why do all forwards lead back to goal? Where is a double back to secure a safe possession? Why, except for Neal-Bullen to Garlett, were there no deliberate short passes for a shot at the goals in the forward line? Why are our players slow to react and make position and create leading options when we have possession following a switch? Why are our kick ins so predictable? Why do the opposition midfielders read Max's work better than ours? Why do we not build a game plan around Clarrie's incredible ability to win the ball and deliver it at speed - its seems he has to look for attacking targets because we are not offering?

12 wins is a good year but it hurts me that we should have had more and I despair that the lessons of this year might not be absorbed for next year.

Go dees.

Im confident they will if we miss the finals this year.

We don't need to change the whole game plan to get the players to stop, look, think and then go after taking a mark.

As much as it pains me, the game plan revolves around getting all players back to win the ball but sometimes we play on so quickly we don't give ourselves a chance to get players forward of the ball to kick it to.

We are just asking for a bit of poise and to actually value the benefit that comes from taking a kick after a mark as opposed to being under pressure in general play.

But the proposition is that "our game plan is holding us back", and you agreed.

I agree that we need some poise and calmness at times. That comes with experience but in the meantime that comes with leadership (and I thought Jones showed this yesterday) and it comes with hard work. But it's not a matter of changing how we are playing fundamentally.

After finally getting around to watching the replay, I was much happier with our performance. At the game live I was a bit disappointed, but I thought Brisbane actually deserved more credit on second viewing. We were also quite unlucky a couple of times with Brisbane's goals. (The one on the half time siren was the unluckiest goal of the year.) Key points:

  • We miss Viney significantly, because his pressure around the ball is enormous. This was especially evident early in the game.
  • Hogan was the big plus obviously and his reading of the incoming ball and goal kicking was as good as its ever been. He also looks to have lost a bit of weight.
  • Pedersen was also fantastic and looks super fit.
  • Rockliff is the best value free agent on the market.
  • Garlett is a bit out of form, so hopefully he can find some in the next two weeks.

I watched the replay for the first time last night, having gone to the game. Some random thoughts:

  • I found it a very tense game to watch live and i was unhappy that we did not kick away. But it was actually a pretty good game of football and we played pretty well. Credit to Brisbane who played terrific.
  • Their midfield smashed us in the first quarter and a half. Gawn does not look right and we really miss Viney. But by god Oliver is something out of the box and Tyson is a terrific hard ball winner
  • Watching AFL live is so much better than on TV.  I find it so frustrating on TV not knowing what is ahead of a player. The classic is when they don't go and chip sideways or backwards. is it because there is no one up forward - as is often the case - or are they being risk adverse?
  • I though the commentary team of Healy, Brown and Hudson was really good. Hudson is the best caller on TV these days i reckon. Quite dry humour that often  seems to go over the head of his colleagues. as an example straight after Jessie got his 6th he said 'the joy of six for jessie'. Very droll
  • Brown is actually a pretty good special comments man, particularly on forwards. Some interesting in game analysis
  • One good example was his analysis of Jessie's first (?) goal with about 4:30 left on the clock in Q1. He highlighted that Brisbane are learning the zone defence that most teams are now employing and so  McStay (i think) was a few metres in front and to the side of Hogan allowing him a free run at the ball as he didn't come across quickly enough (this happened a number of times, gifting Hogan and pedo simple marks). He said they will get better at this
  • Healy noted that the issue was that there was not enough pressure on petracca, who kicked the ball in and zones will always struggle if you allow a player with the kicking skill and depth of someone like trac to kick without sufficient pressure
  • Their midfield pressure was one factor in how poor some of our entries inside 50 were but the real culprit was again our poor disposal skills. Again too many missed targets. For me that is the key reason we can't put teams to the sword. We blow easy chances. That said were pretty efficient in terms of scores v entries
  • As were they. Which was partly a function of our insufficient pressure in the first half but also some poor one on one efforts where our defenders were out marked. Hibberd gave up 2 or 3, Hunt one against the much stronger Rockcliff and TMac had a shocker with Nadal out bodying him a few times. His younger brother was not beaten once one on one and nor was our second AA back man nev.
  • Pedo played another awesome game and looks super fit. Geez he has lost some weight since last year
  • I really liked the Melks game (how about that left foot dart?) and Hibberd is fast becoming one of my favourite players
  • Jones was awesome
  • Vince got better. is slowing down but i think at the point end of the season that is off set by experience
  • Lewis is coming good at the right time. I've loved his composure in the last 2 games and his kicking seems to have improved
  • Can't wait until saturday

Funny you posted this as i was typing my post. Snap.

That goal on half time nearly caused my head to explode at the game.

I was at the city end and so that mad scramble to clear the ball by Lions was right below me. I thought live Zorko dropped the ball and should have been pinged, giving us a shot on goal and potentially 15 point half time lead, which given we dominated the last 10 mins of that q seemed about right.

My suspicion was confirmed on the replay, Zorko dropped it,  but i also saw on the replay (and missed live) that Matheison looked as if he threw the ball. And then there was a miss kick Close marked and they were away. A 3 point lead at half time was not what the doctor ordered!

I enjoyed Brown's commentary too. His comment on the McStay zoning mistake I thought showed terrific insight in to the modern game for a player who didn't play against those types of defences. BT would have just accused him of being too loose.

It's a step in the right direction for footy commentary. The callers should be professionals who are easy on the ear and know the players names (Hudson). The special comments person should know footy backwards and be articulate enough to get the point across; being a bit rough around the edges is fine (Brown). The ex-footy player flog who just wants to banter with his colleagues should be confined to Triple M only.

Could not agree more. I am so sick of ex footballers dominating all aspects of footy media. Almost all are clueless about the modern game and every comment is based on their own experience as players.

BT is just embarrassing.  I heard him arguing 2 weeks back on Talking Footy that the demons had not improved.

The other comment I forgot to add was that Hunt had a shocker. His kicking was poor and he was dispossessed a couple of times when he took on the tackler.

Agree, I didn't really notice that at the game (i miss heaps of stuff at the game as i am too involved emotionally).

He had some shocking turnovers, one in particular. They really hurt too as he is often streaming forward, pulling everyone with him in that wave we love and a bad turnover means it often comes back into an out numbered defence.

Without frost his run is critical and on the g he has more space. But oppo coaches are putting more work into him and he really needs to work on his kicking.

His tackling was terrific as usual though.

We're going to make the finals. Another important game is tigers v saints. Come on saints! If tigers win, it's likely we'll play Sydney week 1. If saints win,  we'll past tigers at the G ?

We'll also be on the non Sydney/GWS side of the finals fixture.  ?

And I'm looking forward to having a full side for once!  Hogan & Viney together. Let's get Watts back in please, Simon. He's learnt his lesson. Whatever it is

Every time you call for Tyson to be dropped it shows how little you know about football.

He will never be dropped!!! The coaches rate him and they are in charge.

I wonder how many years it will take for the penny to drop with the anti Tyson posters

Hopefully it dropped for a few more today bandi.  Including the FD.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
