Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

All Australian: Which Dees Deserve a Nod?

Demonland

Recommended Posts

Which Dees do you think deserve a look in for an All Australian nod for the 40 man squad?

The AFL website has picked out 4 Dees.

Jeff Garlett: The classy forward has put together the most consistent season of his 165-game career, booting a team-leading 38 goals, and equal with fellow All Australian contender Essendon's Orazio Fantasia. Garlett's forward-half pressure has also been a staple of his game and a marked improvement on recent seasons.

Michael Hibberd: Missed the first four games due to an Achilles injury, but the former Bomber has been one of the competition's best defenders this season. Hibberd has been one of the recruits of the year, with the attacking defender averaging a career-high 28 disposals and ranking No.1 in the AFL for average metres gained per match (566.9m).

Neville Jetta: The underrated defender does not get the credit he deserves but the fact of the matter is Jetta is one of the competition's best one-on-one defenders. Regularly matches up on the opposition's most dangerous small forward and rarely gets beaten.

Clayton Oliver: Deserves to be in the final team based on his consistent output in a breakout second year at AFL level. Oliver has averaged 30 disposals, including 10 games above 30 touches or more, and 6.8 clearances per game. Gets criticised by some for over handballing, but his hands in heavy congestion are elite and almost unrivalled. - Ben Guthrie

Realistically, probably only Hibberd gets the nod on a back flank.  He's been unbelievable this year.

If I put my red and blue glasses on then I would try and sneak Jetta and Oliver in there as well, but I don't think it will happen.  Jetta is one of the best in the game at the moment but there are others who get more of the ball, and therefore more exposure, he will get the nod ahead of him.  Doesn't make it right, though.

I'm talking about the 40 man squad. I think Hibberd is a definite inclusion in the actual team. Clarry man get a bench spot. Jetta of course is always overlooked and perhaps my one eyed red and blue glasses prevent me from being objective.

Ah, of course.  Sorry, missed that at the start.

The four above should certainly be in the squad.  Not sure if we can sneak another one in there this year.

I think Garlett has been fantastic for most of the year but his form in the past few weeks might cost him a spot in the 40 man squad.

All four will make the squad.

I will be shocked if Jetta does not make  final team. The premier small defender in the league and won't be over looked this year.

Hibberd will make the squad but I'm not he will make the final team. It seems it takes more than season at the elite level to make the final cut and for this reason i dont think Oliver will make the 22 either.

Agree DL that garlett's last few weeks will cost him a spot in the 22

Jeff Garlett: Too much Eddie love.

Michael Hibberd: Must be a good chance.

Neville Jetta: Too much Laird love.

Clayton Oliver: Oliver may be robbed in the same way Robbo was robbed - the selectors will pick a Brad Johnson type who has been a long time favourite, but who has not been previously picked.

Do the AA selectors stray outside their brief when they pick players for a career's worth of work instead of for that one year's worth of work?

Agree. Only those 4 could be considered.  Clarry should be a lock for the 22 given he is  6th or 7th in the AFL Coaches votes and the Brownlow predictor. Hibbo a must for a HBF.

All 4 should make the squad, but;

Hibberd won't make the team because of the media's love for Howe, as well as Laird's proven history in making the team.  Not to mention that the token Geelong player on each line means Tuohy will be more likely to get a spot.

Garlett won't make the team because of the fact that Eddy is a better small forward.  Just...

Oliver may make the interchange.

Jetta is a lock for a back pocket, or potential spot on the bench.

So to answer my own question Oliver would join 3 other players (that i can find) to make the AA team in their 2nd year; Ricciuto, Wingard and Jeremy Cameron. Other notables are

3rd year -  Judd, Selwood Bontempelli,

4th - L Matthews, N Buckley, Dangerfield and that disgraced ex Essendon coach

5th - Carey, Voss and Fyfe

6th - G Ablett Jnr

10th - G Ablett Snr

The thing with Oliver and the AA is that the midfield is red hot this year. Dustin Martin, Tom Mitchell, and Patrick Dangerfield. I would probably think Josh Kelly gets a wing. And Oliver misses out due to Martin, Mitchell and Danger. Oliver may get a bench position. I would give him a spot on the interchange. He has been a top 5 mid this year. Just not a top 3.

Oliver and Hibberd will definitely make the squad of 40.

Jetta should make the squad but he's just the sort of player you can see being overlooked.

Garlett's last few weeks may cost him a squad position. He needs to smash the last couple of weeks to put himself back in the frame. That said, he'd still be a worthy inclusion as it stands.

i would tip Oliver to be a greater chance than Hibberd to make the final 22 due to the amount of competition for those back six spots.

As great an achievement as it would be for Oliver, and as much as I wanted to get Hibberd to the club, and as much as I love Jeffy, Jetta is the one I'd most like to see get the nod.

The great thing is that all four would be a great story in their own right.

Hibberd and Oliver surely will make the AA team.  Jetta a huge chance and will be a certainty if they choose a lock down defender, as they should .

Check out other teams forums and all three make a high % of the teams.

You've got to feel for Neville Jetta. Last year Dane Rampe, this year Rory Laird, and always the selectors think 'ok we've got a small defender so don't need another one'.

Here's the question - would you have two Neville Jettas in your team at once? For me, I'd say hell yes. Given how well he performs when out of position, outsized, isolated and outnumbered, he's much more than just a one-trick 'lock down the opponent's goalsneak' defender.

Hibberd just keeps doing his job at least as well as anyone else in the position and must surely be on the shortlist and I can't think of two players I'd rather have on the half-back flank.

Garlett it'll depend on his final couple of games and whether they can erase the memory of the recent form slump.. Kick six against Brisbane then a match-winning four against Collingwood, he'd be in.

Surprised to see oliver not in people's 22. Was widely regarded as a bench 22 midfielder mid year by impartials. And hasn't dropped off.

Hibberd and Jetta will duke it out for one spot in the 22... both won't get in though.

Nev Jetta. Would be one of the first pencilled in every selection meeting.  Honest, reliable and puts in a workmanlike effort every game.

And that is just what will deny him an all Aussie place. No flowing locks, no controversy - just does his job every week.

Pity we haven't got a few more like him.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
