The worst of it was last years grand final it was a disgrace free kicks not paid to swans or frees given to the bulldogs . 

But that was unusual to be so severe , I think a good team will be well served to create a buffer on the scoreboard to allow for umpire mistakes and momentum given to teams from umpires decisions.

It's too simplistic too ask who the umpires are conspiring with.  Look at the overall world sports gambling picture and the identified result fixing in cricket, soccer, horse racing. Then look at the unregulated and massive Asian betting syndicates and our geographical proximity.  To say that AFL (and the NRL) hasn't been targeted in some way, shape or form would be very naive. 

I have never seen an AFL season such as this with so many close results, strange MRP decisions and blatantly bad umpiring.  So is the common denominator just coincidence, mismanagement, bad luck/good luck or am I'm just another conspiracy theorist nut job? Perhaps I am.  However I know three things for sure:

1. Money speaks all languages.

2. Everyone has their price.

3. The truth is often stranger than fiction.

Let us be very clear - there is no conspiracy or worse with the application of the rules. The umpires are being asked to apply stupidly conceived rules and interpretations developed by the AFL and its various sub groups.

The 50m rules need to be urgently revised. They were introduced to counter the Sheedy coached technique to deliberately concede the old 15m penalty so as to delay the ball movement of the opposition. The justification was deliberate time wasting. Today it is an over technical pedantically applied rule that relies on an strict liability and is a rule that is offensive to the spirit of our great game.

The 50 m against Jesse on the boundary yesterday was an egregious error by the umpire - the Brisbane player dropped the ball without any contribution from Jesse. Paying 50m not for overstepping but for standing on the mark on the wrong blade of grass without the Brisbane player being inconvenienced or affected in any way, as happened twice yesterday, is evidence that the rules are absurd. All it should have taken was a reminder from the umpire to move back a step.  It's called understanding the game and exercising a discretion for the benefit of the game. No one wants to see silly 50m penalties.

On the other hand, why was Jesse not given a 50m when the Brisbane player pushed him to the ground when taking a mark in the last quarter. That was inconveniencing the player and a deliberate wasting of time.

It's time the AFL reviewed all the rules and removed those that are offensive to the spirit of our great game. Unlike other sporting codes, our rules were based on the contest (in the back, round the neck, dropping the ball etc) not on some technical and artificial breach of an arbitrary imposition on scoring and continuous movement.

Leave arbitrary pedantic, petty and pathetic rules to rugby, soccer and netball.

Did anyone else hear on sen this morning talking about the umpires not wanting to retain the bounce because of too many injuries. It went on for a while then some caller from WA rang in to say he was involved with the umpires and the problem is most of their " top or best" umpires were too old, that's why they are copping injuries. They then went on to list all those 40 and over, talk about a dad's army there were about 8 of them. He also said because they get paid so well now none of them want to give it away, but its holding back the development of those in their 20's.

Great post. The one against Hogan was so ridiculous and the other two while maybe being technically there were very harsh. All three decisions were the result of the umpire (I think they were all first AFL gamer number 14, he's so inexperienced his name isn't even next to his number on the umpire site yet, did the VFL grand final last year, another schmozzle) pulling the trigger too quickly with no care for the player. When it comes to such a large penalty umpires need to be  sympathetic to the players.

My dad, who saw our last premiership (and many others before that), has a long-held view on this: the umps have something against the colour of our strip, most notably the red. It clouds their decision-making, threatens them in some way. Something about the sub-conscious, a primary colour, fear, blood. All that.

Perhaps, the umps also resent the supposed old school ties and 'establishment' of the MFC. That there is, in other words, some sort of political class warfare going on with their decisions against us.

Discrimination based on colour and class.

Hold on, what's this topic about again?!

The club should (if not already done) request/strongly advise the AFL that we are most concerned if either one is umpiring our game. Have had a gut full of their biased decisions. It's just not Melbourne but friends who follow other teams say the same. Could they be some of the older ones keeping younger umpires one from getting games. VERY happy to retire them both.

That would explain St KIlda as well with their red stripe but clearly they never got the email about Adelaide.
