Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Apparently Port didn't read the memo about ruckman 'straight arm blocking' as Paddy also gave away 5 frees on Saturday!  https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/max-tax-the-ridiculous-ruck-rule-set-to-impact-paddy-ryder/news-story/ac5459c91203b1bd694b77cb66dc34ff

David King is talking sense on this one:

“(Paddy) is not really disrupting the opposition ruckman. He’s hanging his arm out, but he’s not really pushing. It’s a protection mechanism and a balancing action.”

And amusingly and disturbingly he says:

“We saw Max Gawn at training last week and he had his arm in a sling.

It is bizarre when last year's AA ruckman and this years main contender are being penalised for a techinque infringement that has never happened before.

Umpires should enforce the rules, not change the interpretation 2 weeks from finals against 2 of the premier ruckman.  Just ridiculous.

That's sad if true.

I thought Max looked a little lazy on the weekend, I wonder if all of this is affecting him? He was 50m behind Martin quite often around the ground.

I definitely think it mentally impacted his rucking , when you have been doing things a certain way since forever and now are told you will be paid free kicks against for it it has to mess with your head a bit. What a joke 3 rounds out from the end of the H&A season that the umpires crack down on it . The "rule" of the week thing has to stop ruining our game

This is what causes so much angst with fans and great frustration, it needs to stop.

Removing someone's accreditation is not the same thing as censorship. Anyone who has been accredited has been given access which most people don't receive. It's therefore a privilege. With that privilege comes responsibility, one of which is not to make stuff up.

If someone wants to make stuff up and publish it there are plenty of places to do so which don't require accreditation, such as social media, like Twitter and Facebook.

And just to draw a parallel, I believe Demonland's administrators will withdraw a person's privileges if that person posts stuff they've made up on Demonland. I think Gill McLachlan is just  following the excellent standards set by Demonland.

i'm on board with Gil, there has to be some accountability, and journos bleat like lambs when criticised  (robbo a prime example) but they really do harm with some of the crap they peddle. and hardly Gestapo, if someone is talking crap about you you're simply asking them to leave your house. nothing says they cant keep writing.

Wow. So you don't like what someone says and you take away their platform/ability to say it. Let's just be sure what we are talking about here. That is censorship writ large and totalitarian behaviour.

If you are both happy with that that's your choice. Me? I'm disgusted that you and Gil would think like that.

So who exactly determines if something is 'real' or 'made up'? What committee or person will sit in judgement to determine whether a coaching rumour is true or made up? You are happy for someone to do that? Unbelievable. You might be better off living in the Soviet Union and reading Pravda.

Does Tom Scully have his playing accreditation revoked because he lied about going to GWS? Does every second President of the AFL get 'de-platformed' because they say they are 100% behind their coach only to sack them 3 weeks later?

Your Demonland analogy is rubbish. Yes, if someone is abusive etc then fine that is the rules of the forum but this "And just to draw a parallel, I believe Demonland's administrators will withdraw a person's privileges if that person posts stuff they've made up on Demonland." Are you for real? A footy forum where posters from all walks life rant and post rubbish like confetti?

You want someone to sift through the news and determine what is 'true' before passing that on to you to read? Your forefathers would be turning in their graves that the freedoms (including freedom of speech) they fought for and gave their lives so that you could live in a free society were being given away so meekly.

Shame on you both.

Max needs to lift.

Despite the free kicks, Longer absolutely spanked him 2 weeks ago.

Stef beat him last week too.  Max was clearly trying hard and tried to get involved in the clearances and get his hands on it, but he's not agile enough to make an impact.  He needs to block for the mids or tackle the opposition to hurt a la Mumford.

My assessment is that we were probably playing better when he wasn't in the team.

Seems hard to fathom that really doesn't it   Is that because without him we play a more multi dimensional style which is harder to  negate ? With Max the oppo's coaching seems to easier pinpoint a method of neutralising his effectiveness.

I'd still wager if Max was playing his "A" game  we'd be better. He seems distracted and annoyed currently. The maggots aren''t helping.  A sense of deja vu...reffing taking away our rucking advantages !!

I will put it out there....We won the game in the time when Gawn was off the ground. I was calling for Gawn to be taken out of the ruck at half-time. Not long after half-time, Goodwin gave him a rest and Pedo went in. This is when we got on top and begun winning clearances. We had, essentially, a 4th midfielder competing at centre bounces, as Pedo was effective at ground level.

I truly hope Gawn can dominate this weekend, but if he isn't, then Goodwin has to pull the trigger on Max early and throw him forward with instructions to put it in long and deep to him and Garlett to crumb.

A lot of this will depend on if Gawn actually wants to be competitive or just chuck it in. His attitude these past 2 weeks when things haven't gone his way has been pathetic IMO. He needs a rocket by Goody during the week.

Just becase it isn't happening for you Max doesn't mean you just give up, it's a team game not an individual one.

We need all 22 giving their all if we are to not only make finals, but maybe do something if we make it. Lift.

He did appear to spit the dummy against St.Kilda but he appeared to be trying hard against the Lions, perhaps too hard and in the wrong way, trying to get clearances himself rather than paving an avenue.

Grundy can be effective at clearances himself so maybe Max could contribute most by concentrating on limiting Grundy's influence after the tap.

Count to ten, I actually work in places where people get killed for what they say, let alone what they write. My great grand father, grand father, and brother have all been journalists. You do not need to lecture me on my family members who have died in war.

I am strictly talking about a press tag, not the ability to write, and about football, you get that there is a difference? I also posted that I was happy to hear other options.

Make a constructive suggestion about how to hold the football press to account without being shrill.

Clearly you aren't happy to hear others opinions and given your family history I am even more shocked to hear that you want to curtail people's right to speak.  Thats the thing about free speech, it also means having to listen to things you don't want to. Fight bad information with better information or better ideas. I don't believe in censoring anyone's views or de-platforming people. Particularly the AFL that would have to be one of the worst offenders for shutting down views they don't like.

Speak to Dale Lewis about the AFL and his views on drugs.

Speak to  Matt Rendell and the his views on the AFL silencing him.

Look at the Essendon drug saga and the shady stories from both the EFC and the AFL.

I wouldn't trust the AFL in a world of Sundays to determine what stories are true or not.

But you are.

Good luck with that.

As for "Make a constructive suggestion about how to hold the football press to account?" its not my position that the football press needs to be held to account.

So I'll take that as a 'no', you have no clue what a press pass is. Please don't subscribe me to sentiments I don't hold. No effin where, do i say i want to curtail free speech. Most of the pulitzer prize winners didnt have a press pass.

As for the AFL I agree, there is plenty of dodgy behaviour that needs to be held to account. But still my point is about holding the media to account by some method, not the AFL and two wrongs, reporrtedly, don't make a right.

Tell me where the Press "Alma Mater"says anything other than the truth?

On Max. Would he be the only Ruckman ever, who, because of the "worry" of his presumed domination preseason, by the AFL's "Brains" trust, has antiquated rules revived and used against this domination. And this could have come from this site's preseason blabbering......

The Club would be well aware of how this needs to be re calibrated  back in our favor. I shall wait and watch.....

On Talking Footy and FC last night they talked about other clubs complaining about Max's technique - Redleg posted that he heard similar last week.  This week Ryder was in the umpire's gun.

I would dearly love to know which club(s) did the complaining.  Probably a top 8 club(s) trying to put them off their game before finals.  Altho I wouldn't put it past Carlton given the ethics of their doctors and their snidey coach.

De-platforming , which is what you suggested, is akin to shutting down dissenting views. It's what the totalitarians do when they don't like the views of others.

Or im simpler terms, "you can have an AFL press pass if you toe the AFL line and write what we like".

You can't really be advocating for that?

Feels like he needs to reset over the preseason, get his body right and establish that connection with the midfielders.

The connection is gone at the minute, he's not getting around the ground as much, and I somehow feel he's not going to fix this in the matter of a week or two.

I reckon he's going to be a man on a mission this week. Max is one that's been around the club for a long time and would be as desperate to play finals as anyone at the club.

Grundy killed us last time but he really had to no opponent, this week he comes up against last years AA. This could be a day out for Max (as long as the umps don't give stupid frees).

The frees being plucked agains Max and Ryder are mind boggling. Infuriating even. I've never been so confused, you cannot see a free in any of them, no matter how they try to spin it.

And it's just all of a sudden, against the 2 premier tap ruckman in the league, on the eve of finals. Something stinks.

This week Melbourne takes on Hawthorn hot on the heels of a six-day break after its encouraging response to a disappointing season opener in steamy Sydney. The Hawks were disappointingly wasteful last week, but they also failed to bring sufficient pressure into the contest and, as a consequence, the Bombers scored goals at will. Against the Demons, a repeat would be fatal. The Hawks are still in the rebuilding phase and need everything to go right against Melbourne which is gradually b
