Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

A Time to vent about this Club!

Good post. I don't understand the pessimism on here about our club at the moment.

I think we clearly have the best youth - GWS included - in the competition at the moment. And unlike GWS, we actually have depth. If GWS lose Kelly then it brings them right back to the pack. He is clearly their best player. In addition, Deledio, Griffin, Johnson and Shaw aren't going to be around much longer.

Never have I been more proud and buoyant about MFC.

I like your optimism KD however you will find the pessimism stems from past incompetence which on present value appears to be arriving again. We may have some of the best young talent but it wont take long for Brisbane, Carlton and even the Pies to catch up.

We should have a place in the 8 stitched up by now and like most I dont want to wait another year for the Club to play finals. I am travelling from Adelaide this week (with a some doubt about winning) and naturally hope the boys can prove me wrong.

That's why I like these over the top and silly threads where people need to 'vent' - it gives most of us the opportunity to read the OP, sit back and go 'we aren't even close to being that bad.  We then realise again that we're headed in the right direction and that this season is far from over.  We've done lots right this year and we're still learning to fix up the issues we have.  Goodwin has only been a senior coach for 20 games after all.

We all know how this is going to go... we'll crush the Saints, then destroy the Lions...

then lose by a point after the siren to the Pies.

It's just how we roll.

Means jack really it's about a successful culture ala Geelong, Hawthorn, Sydney that wins flags and finals. If we are going to continue on like how we are what's the point really?

i like others want the club to stand for something foreignly different.... successful not a regular laughing stock

The difficulty for us Melbourne fans if we've been through all this before we can almost write the script. We hit rock bottom, get good kids in, start to build what looks like the beginning of success, finals are laid out in front of us as long as we do what's expect of us, only to falter at that final step. We come crashing back down and start it all again.

I'm not necessarily saying that's what's happening here but there's no doubt this week is a crossroads for us. Last year we had the idea of finals taken away from us when we lost stupidly to Carlton, and now on the back of losing to the Roos and getting our asses thoroughly handed to us by GWS it could well happen again.

The match this week is a 50/50, we win and finals are again on the cards. We lose and it's another year our fans get their hopes up only to have it snatched away.

I would think players like Watts, Jones, Viney, Gawn and all others that have been at the club for a minimum of 3-4 year to be playing out of their skins at the prospect of finals.

As frustrated as we all are the reality is perhaps we're just not ready ...

The Tigers look like challenging this year after  3--4 yrs of similar performances like ours ...

I think that is a #Richmondmyth which helps Melbourne supporters feel better.

This table shows there is almost no similarity between our recent performance and Richmonds.

image.png.897f588663f47a1987de324a04109847.png

They made finals for 3 years in a row.  In 2016 they collapsed a bit to finish 13th a few spots below us.  They are now sitting 3rd!!  That is a consistent performance which I would dearly love for us.

Not related to your post, some Melbourne supporters like to think we are about the youngest team and least experienced team and conclude our youngsters are getting tired.  Richmond have 7 players with less than 50 games experience who have played nearly every game this year.  They are not showing signs of tiring.

Not sure whether we are ready but Richmond is not a good comparison with us.  I'm sad to say they have been streets ahead of us for years and still are.

I fully agree that Richmond are a bad comparison for us, but we have had a very different season when it comes to the younger players.  The Tigers have had minimal injuries and have been able to either rest their younger players or have them play in less demanding positions.  For us, however, we've had plenty of injuries and have therefore had to rely far more on our younger players.  Petracca and Hunt are a case in point - their last 4-6 weeks have been quiet, and to me that's no coincidence.  Oliver has also had to carry a huge load all year, and the kid is just 19.

Maybe.  But that does not account for the gap in their performance and ours.

My view of Richmond's success with injuries/young players tiring, is they have players with the accurate skills to play a fast flowing game which we don't.  This is less physically demanding on their young players.  Our game plan is based around crash and bash.

They have also been smarter -  we have lost almost as many games of our hardened players from suspension as we have to injury.  Our suspensions are as much to blame for the pressure on the younger kids as the injuries.  That was entirely in our control.  Poor discipline and leadership.  Tigers have both in spades.

Rich have had injuries to their ruckman and #1 forward and managed to win (as we did).

All in all I just can't agree that injuries and the resultant tiring of young players account for the significant difference in performance by the two teams.

I wouldn't argue that it's a significant difference, but our kids are being asked to play different roles than theirs.  Players like Rioli and Bolton, for example, are given less physical roles to play or play a less physical brand of football.  Oliver and Petracca, as an example, play a totally different role within our side.  At their age it takes it's toll.

Suspensions have certainly played a part, and something that could have been easily avoided, but the role that our younger players are given has had a factor in the last month.  The beauty of it is that we still have time to turn it around.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
