Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

There were plenty who were crying foul over the decision to promote Viney to a dual captaincy role with Jones earlier in the year.  Unbelievably, they've gone quiet.  It was always going to take time and now we are reaping the benefits.

Viney's game has gone to another level this season with his professionalism, leadership and competitiveness which has also rubbed on to his team mates, similar to Jonesy.

Personally not fussed either way, but recall Barrett being heavily critical of Melbourne's recruiting for a number of years, referring to a 'scattergun' approach.

At times he wasn't far off the mark. It probably continued on to the Kelly/Tyson, Salem, Hunt trade.

There were periods where he seemed fairly harsh on Melbourne, but in retrospect I'm not sure whether it was particularly unfair. Seems to be very positive on where Melbourne sits this year.

Is Damien Barrett just pumping our tyres up as a tactic to help his beloved Roos?

I've heard him call us the real deal on a number of occasions this week.

Maybe hoping we'll get ahead of ourselves with the extra media attention...

Don't think unbelievably is the word I would use.

I still think it'd be better to have Jones as the standalone captain and Viney as his vice.  I disagree with Barrett's assertion that it was a 'safe' decision as though that's some sort of negative thing.

Jack Viney would now be acting captain, and still be playing the exact same brand of footy now as he's been playing his entire career as he only knows one way- the captaincy hasn't changed that.

Viney is a young player of exception talent and courage- he will be a long term captain of the MFC.  He's displayed these qualities since his first match when he confronted the team in the rooms following a loss to Port Adelaide.  Viney's leadership' never been in doubt, but the timing has been called into question.

But... the decisions made, the season's two thirds over and it isn't going to change.  While not a terrible decision, or even a particularly bad one, I think it was a call made too early.

It's simply not true though- there was a thread on this topic following the WCE win, where Viney played a blinder as captain.

It's never been a slight on Viney to think the decision was the wrong one and being a 'keyboard warrior' has nothing to do with it.

It's not unreasonable to debate the decision and those that didn't support it would now accept they were wrong.  It's an opinion business and if you're going to have a pot shot at everyone for getting things wrong you'll be very busy.

I'm not sure if I posted at the time but I was unsure of the decision until I heard Jones talk about it on "On The Couch".

It's also not unreasonable to give things time.  We're too quick to judge and say something is wrong when it hasn't even had time to play out.  It's fine to question the decision, but there were plenty calling it the wrong one, blaming Viney's slow start to the year on it and so forth.  I know we live in a time where everything has to happen quickly, but many things don't, and this is one of them.

Viney stamped his leadership credentials in the rooms after our Rd 1 debacle to Port Adelaide in 2013 by speaking to the group about his passion for the club and the jumper after another insipid performance under Mark Neeld.

His first fricking AFL game he took it upon himself to deliver that message to the team.

Neeld even said in his post-match that day that Jack Viney "is (was) probably the most Melbourne person in that room."

I couldn't give a sh*t what Barrett thinks or writes. All I know is that Goodwin is an astute judge of leaders amongst men and the dynamics of the co-captaincy between Jones and Viney,

True on both counts TPF, and I certainly wasn't trying to make out in my initial post that anyone who questioned the decision was a 'keyboard warrior'.  I just think this is proof that some things need time and we can't be so quick to judge.  Some things happen overnight, others take months.  This decision was one of them.

Ah dont let providence colour your cheer so much.

I still am not a fan of two captains.  It's nonsensical in its roots. But that aside.  What has  happened if you look at the facts and not the fairytale is there has been a need for a captain whilst Jones was off injured.  Had Viney even been VC he would have still stepped into the breach.

Lucks a fortune sometimes. This is nothing more than that. That doesn't  ( nor is meant to ) take away from the sterling efforts of Viney to lead by taking games by the scruff of its neck. He's done magnificently in this respect. I didnt think he would/could at this age but he has.

Tbh ...and I await the howlers. Jack has shown more leadership on filed that Chunk has. For mine it was only in the GC game THIS year he took matters into his own hands and played a CAPTAINS game.

Strangely we've operated quite well without Jones, but less so without Viney,

Not that you could but Id make Viney sole captain for 2018 onwards.

Cant see it happening...backed into a corner now is Goody.

Again ...lucks a fortune me thinks

These articles will have no impact on the game this week. Certainly not on how the deees will play the game. In previous years it might have. This team now is made of sterner stuff and North will be found wanting. I hope they will be found wanting by at least 8 goals.

Bet that purple wrote an article back in Jan saying it was a stupid idea. Not going to bother looking, but. like all the muck diggers these days, the opinion changes week by week and they pretend they never had a different one.

I still don't like 2 Captain's, never will. Viney should have been made VC, which would have made him Captain now.

His efforts against Meth Coke and Port have been quite incredible, to do what he has done at such a young age.

He has carried the side over the line, something i have never seen Jones do, as much as he has tried over the years.

How much have we missed Jones over the last month?

his return will be most welcome and i hope he plays finals, but he is not a crucial player on field as a leader, like he once was.

I could see absolutely no reason why Viney should be made co-captain in stead of, for example, vice-captain.

It's always been a handover, inevitable. But there are other leaders there now too.....

People were critical of Viney's form at the start of the year and attributed it to the captaincy. We now know he was affected by Plantar Fascia which doesn't rule you out from playing, but drastically impacts your contribution.

I also reckon Jonesy has had a great year, which in my in part be explained by having less of the captaincy duties.

One match which that article didn't mention was the game over in Perth. Viney was extraordinary in that game.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
