VFL Development League - competition to finish

The Vfl is the AFL's reserves. Tne VAFA is not the next strongest comp,the EFL is based on the fact a combined EFL side beat the combined VAFA side las year. The VFL sides should have the same name as their AFL teams in Victoria and be referred to as the reserves. Country/Suburban clubs should be the bridging gap between the AFL and VFL and TAC teams. A player in the country/suburban league (capped number of players) should be able to  play AFL football. A draft like system get to pick which coutry/suburban side it will affiliate with.( possible to occur with more than one side),The existing draft system applies ********. 

The current draft system needs to be overhauled,what is ironic the dees with get a higher draft pick for 2018 and yet the HAWKS who have won three premiership in row will get a lower draft pick. What I would do is to give the worst performing placed team over the past past three years the no.1 pick followed by the next team. Brissy get no.1,Dees no.2,gc no.3 etc .

Get rid of free agency and clubs trading out their 1st draft picks.

This is very interesting.  It means VFL clubs essentially will need to work with Local clubs for top up players.  I wonder if this will see some local clubs forming strong relationships with VFL clubs to get them to direct players that miss out to them.  An example could be a strong Premier club in the eastern suburbs, Casey has 10-15 players on their list they can call up, assuming clubs will still want their players playing together rather that scattered across Victorian leagues.

"The fear among clubs, especially those with AFL alignments, is there will be too few playing opportunities to encourage footballers to pursue the VFL pathway. VFL clubs will have to foster a strong feeder system with grassroots clubs, where the increased leftover players will filter to. "

Also reports that Saints and North look like fielding their own VFL clubs next year with Frankston a possible additional team.

If there are three more teams one hopes that the seasons are more closely aligned (length wise) and that byes are used sparingly.

I have a bold solution.

We go back to playing under 19's,Reserves and Seniors in the same competition and have corresponding curtain raisers when possible.

Draft the Under 19s from agreed zones but make these players able to be drafted at draft age.

This is a legitimate fear although the money players can earn in local footy is out of whack and a good player that has the ability to play VFL could make $1000+ a game cash playing local footy.  AFL clubs will still need 10+ players to top up so kids that miss the draft still have a chance to play at an AFL reserves side and the stand alone VFL clubs.  You would have fears though for the financial viability of a number of these stand alone clubs.

It would be good for AFL Vic to form a Metro Premier League that sits under the VFL.  This will not only provide a better path way but also help level out local competitions through out Metro Vic.
