For a player who Nasher rightly points out is spare parts or back up, he needs to be looked at on a weekly basis rather than what he produces over a longer period - his form was much better a month ago than what it's been in the last 3 weeks (I know he's last quarter against the Eagles was great but he was very poor up until then), plus I thought his defense (when down there) last week was very ordinary. So on form he'd be the first one out if Watts was available because his form has dropped since Gawn has returned.

Don't get me wrong, I love that he's been able to fill in so well, but he is just a fill in and with TMac filling the role of Fwd/Ruck at the moment there's not really a spot for him on the team once we're healthy.

I'm keen on seeing what Maynard can do. Let him have a run on the ball as an inside mid flat out (with rotations obviously). Got a feeling he might surprise a few with his fearless approach. We won the last game against Adelaide by smashing them around the ball. Let them get easy ball out to their runners and their forwards look like gods. 

I doubt Tyson will get up, and Watts is IMO certainly out.

I would like to see Maynard come in this week and he's coming along nicely judging by the Casey review. On the other hand I don't think Ben Ken will get a game this week after reading the review from Plapp.

The worst thing we could do is bring him back too early with a foot injury, I'll be shocked if he is back in time for the Port Adelaide game.

Smith is clearly a player for the future, but his selection last week baffled me and I can't see how we can carry him into the game against Adelaide.  The defensive side to his game is B+ and possibly even A or A+, but what I've seen from him thus far at senior level is that he lacks offensive, skills, confidence and ball getting ability at this point.  To some degree, I think we are such a long shot to beat Adelaide that we might as well blood him for the experience and or turn the game into a defensive grind and minimise the damage to our percentage, but that would go so far against our gamestyle now, that I'm not sure we could pull it off.

I thought what we clearly lacked last week was ball winning grunt around the midfield and to me that brings into play Tyson (if fit), Ben Ken and or possibly Trengove.  I'm not convinced that either Stretch or Kent are playing as badly as some suggest, but they would probably be the main ones in the firing line to make way for mind.

^ Of course Jack won't play against Port Adelaide. He had an operation to repair his Plantar Fascia which had to be fully torn in order for it to repair and heal fully.

He is yet to start walking. WALKING. 

The Port game is in 10 days. 

Jack is keen to play asap, obviously. And when asked a silly question by Burgan, he is going to give a silly answer. Why Matt Burgan would then quote Jack's silly words to use in a headline and article that then gives Ben Guthrie fuel to fill the AFL website with more [censored] filler is sooooooo boring. 

Most obviously he is not going to play, even if he says "I'm going to try and get up for the Port Adelaide game". 

It's amazing what can be written about these days.

Did I read somewhere that Casey has a bye this week? If that's right, I expect JKH to play in Darwin. He was the carry-over emergency and therefore didn't play last week. By all reports he's been in form playing midfield for Casey so is the right type of player to come in, and it would be unhelpful for him to miss playing any form of football two weeks in a row.

So, in my mind I've settled on JKH and Tyson (if fit) to come in for Stretch and Smith (if Tyson plays). I know that means two midfielders to replace a midfielder and a defender, but any of Lewis, Vince, Melksham or Harmes can replace Smith.

Long shot against Adelaide? We beat them at their home ground by 40 points only a few weeks back without a ruckman or full forward and hunt going off at half time. 

Yes, we are missing our captains and watts but we have hogan and Gawn. 

Also, we have now played in Darwin for 5 years. It's a bigger advantage to us than playing at the G. Adelaide have never played there and aren't used to the conditions. 

Wouldnt be surprise during if the game is a lot closer.

Stretch had a pretty good first half but I thought faded. I am no fan of Kent and thought he played poorly.

Yep it's a bye for Casey. It was probably planned by the club to allow the Casey AFL members to participate in clinics etc which I suspect is part of the deal to get the thirty pieces of silver the NT government pay us.

Most people wanted to drop Wagner last week but it seems not to be the case this week

hopefully lesson learned that if a player has talent to give them more than one week back from injury before dropping them (eg, J Smith)

I hope you are right, but I think the evidence thus far of the respective situations was that we were able to more effectively replace and work around the absence of Gawn and Hogan than we were our or midfield A team last week against Carlton.

We beat power by a point in 2010. Makes this out 8th year of playing in Darwin. I hope we have learnt how to play the ground by now.

You are correct Bandi, we have played there 8 times, but the first was 2006 - against Adelaide, they won by 5 points.

I think our successes and failures in Darwin would have a lot more to do with the team we have available than the way we play the ground. After all, how many years and games did we get to play at Etihad before we finally had a team good enough to win. That includes against teams for which Etihad was not their home ground, - Freo, Brisbane, etc.

As it happens we have a pretty reasonable record in Darwin, we've won 4 and lost 4. Three of those losses were in 12, 14 and 15, I think we all know how well we were going in those years. In between we beat Brisbane in 13. (Oops, thanks BBP quite right lost to Brisbane, that makes our record 3 wins and 5 losses). And further supports team v venue as main influence.

I agree with an earlier poster, that we were better placed, team balance wise, last time against Adelaide. I'm not writing off our chances, but as is clearly obvious, a few of our players are struggling because of lack of match play and subsequently their touch and fitness.

If we win this, it would suggest that we have a special team this year.

And, as an aside re Darwin heat - high 20s around game time - maybe this would be less of a problem for minor soft tissue issues than a late game at the G in 5-10 degrees?  Don't know. Just speculating. 

Yeah it could be good for some of the injured / rested guys to go up - do some training in the heat .

Nothing would surprise me on the selection front this week. It's a gruelling trip, coupled with a tough match against the ladder leader, and with the pointy end of the season plus possible finals to come ... who knows.
