Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I think Bugg has improved a lot. He goes hard. His goal kicking needs heaps of work and a poor part of his game( not his snaps) but I get the impression his passion is much higher than Kents.

He plays the odd OK game, but I don't rate him.

He's not the worst player I've seen in a Melbourne jumper.  I'll save those accolades for Tom Gillies types.

I know his attributes,  They're not enough for me.

But we can win with him in the team, so yeah, he's not the worst.

You missed Hannan's speed.  It's vital.  Especially against a slow Sydney.

X-factor, overhead marking, speed, versatility and he hits the scoreboard.

He's kicked 17 goals and is on track for 30.  He's not close to being dropped.

Yep, hes surprisingly quick ans also hard to tackle. Quick hands too. His give to hibberd in the play that resulted in thst final boundry throw in was brilliant.

A few weeks ago (after Gold Coast I think) I was very much in this frame of mind. But I've swung, he does enough competing and harassing and does get a few snags every now and then for me that he justifies his selection. He's not pretty to look at, and he should practice goal kicking until he can kick them in his sleep but he's a certain starter at the current state of the list IMO.

Between 1-22 where do you rate him from the weekend's team ?

On the weekend gone, he would've been in the bottom 5 players. He was off, still niggled and competed but didn't do a lot. But he's been in enough in recent weeks that one bad performance isn't going to have him dropped.

I think Jesse's mental state could be the only thing holding him back to play this week. I'd definitely want him playing VFL if he doesn't get up.

He's training for over 3 weeks now. Fitness shouldn't be an issue. He missed less footy than Max and was off his feet for much less time, and Gawny went OK in his comeback game I reckon.

Imagine the boost it will give the rest of the boys if he plays. The reaction if he kicks a goal! Will be huge.

My mail is that Watts won't play.

Interesting.

From what I have been told Garlett will miss, Watts will play. Hogan told coaches he wants to play, coaches trying to hold him back a week but I've been told to expect him to play.

We will see on Thursday!

Some good news re Jack Viney and other injury news from the Afl site

Hogan is a chance to play his first game since round seven when the Dees take on the Swans on Friday night. The star forward will be tested this week to determine his availability. Garlett and Watts also face fitness tests. Viney has been declared a certain starter after hurting his shoulder during the clash with West Coast. - Ben Guthrie

I think that if he is ready, why not?  Do you think he will be overawed??

Stupid or bloody minded?

I trust the selectors, now.  Hope they are sure about Jeffy though if they play him.....cannot afford him being unable to run...would prefer Kent or JKH if Jeffy is not 100%

I think we had discussed when he is ready and keeping it low key. We have not struggled scoring or winning without him so I don't see the rush, particularly when our talls have been in good recent form forward and back. Friday night football against the other in form side just feels too risky and not necessary to me.

I was probably confusing the way I worded the question.  Forget about his weekend performance, where would you rank him in the 22 in a more general sense ?

1, 5, 15, 22 ?

I don't think anyone doubts that Bugg would be in the bottom couple of the best 22 at the moment. But he is currently playing his role, and I can't see anyone knocking the door down to replace him. When Hogan and Watts are ready, he (or Harmes/ANB) will probably be squeezed out.

If Hogan and Watts come back in then either Stretch or ANB will have to go out if not Hannan who I do agree brings that something extra.

ANB for all his forward pressure and improved decision making is excess to needs (dependant on Garlett getting up) with a power forward back in the team demanding the ball.

Stretch did okay but as the replacement for Watts, logic would suggest he's possibly an omission.

Harmes and Bugg below AnB and Stretch IMO.

I'd disagree with that, mainly because their all different players. For me ANB hasn't been doing much wrong since coming in but has been relatively non-influential he was be one I'd look at. Stretch was solid in his return, and especially if Jeffy doesn't play perhaps we play Billy as more of a HFF.

We have come to the problem we all knew was coming. How do we fit all our forwards in? Pederson was quiet for much of the game but made his presence well and truly felt at the end. He's also been in career best form.

Hannan has proven to be a real livewire and unpredictable at times, the goal he kicked was so quick onto his boot I didn't even see it.

Harmes I see as one potentially missing out but like ANB he really has done very little wrong in recent weeks. 21 disposal, 6 contested, 5 tackles, and a goal is a very handy return from him. His goal also massive in the context of the game.

If Hannan and/or Jeffy pull up sore than the decision could be made for the selection committee. But I would say ANB will be first to go. I would like to give Jeffy a week off, he looked way out of sorts and we need him for the rest of the year.

Out: Garlett (inj), ANB/Hannan

In: Watts, Hogan (if good to go) or JKH/Kent

I'm guessing though, selection headaches again. Best kind of headache to have!

We need to start picking an MCG team, not Etihad dashers.

That means stronger aerially,  so Watts and Hogan come in for Bugg and Salem. Pedo CHF, TMac on Buddy, Frost playing smaller/faster (if faster is possible)

Hogan and Watts are surprisingly mobile and remember Hogan was doing center bounce midfield work earlier in the year too.

I cant recall Buddy Franklin ever having a huge game against Melbourne.

Are we his bogey team? Hes certainly never kicked a bag against us that I recall, not even in his Hawthorn days.

Frawley used to hold him well, and I remember Col Garland doing well on him also. Since then, T Mac has been able to hold him.

You forgot the great Alex Georgiou. Not just kept him quite, but let Buddy know about it as well.

Was in at the club yesterday, will attend training this morning and see how Hogan, Watts and Garlett are shaping.  I would proffer that sore and tired bodies will be the key determinant of changes this week, followed by team balance / match-ups.   Dangerfield's comments on TF were instructive about consecutive 6 day turnarounds and the cumulative toll.   Expect to see "rested" or "managed" next to a name or two.

Watts will be the key.  Going back to Webber's informed comments on hamstrings, you'd conclude that Watts' hamstring isn't the back related variety and hence it would be unlikely he'll get up this week.  But here's hoping.  I think Hogan will play and that the club was just taking the external expectations pressure off him when they said 2-3 weeks more.

The club had the game budgeted at 39k (from start of the season), the AFL are forecasting 42k and the MCC 55K.  They settled on 52.5k.  60k wouldn't surprise if the weather is fine (as per the forecast).

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
