Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Trenners in the Mix?

I think people are overly focused on the very small difference between a 7 day break (I.e. that Trenners is on) and a 6 day break (which a current best 22 is on)... it's 1 day FFS! And with sports scientists, masseuses, physios, blah, blah blah I'm sure it can be managed so as to have little to no impact.

Specific injuries are a seperate discussion.

The team has said they've prepared for this sequence of games and I assume, as a result, that we'll manage it so as to have our current best 22 on the park for each game. As we don't have the wins in the bank to "manage" players which results in anything less than our best 22.

Its more the multiple 6 day breaks than just one plus the flight to and from subi

Yes and no.

It's logical that the more short breaks you get between games, particularly subsequent ones, will result in a greater level of fatigue. Imagine being the team that played a full season of 6 day breaks vs a team that got 7 days worth of recovery between games. It effectively means the 6 day break team will be approximately 3 weeks in arrears in relation to available recovery period.

The fact that we have 3 games in a row with only short breaks does mean we'll be required to change things up and, as you've mentioned, we all trust that the Misson and the conditioning team have done their work.

One day can be a very significant variable at this performance level and the other variables of traveling to WA, adjusting to a 2 hour time difference and most likely having a shitty sleep the night beforehand all add up.

Nobody said it was easy / No one ever said it would be this hard.

I'd love the wind back the clock and start again with Jack, but the current 22 are in form, in sync and would all take pride in pushing through this period.

Let them push through. Jack will get his turn.

You're very vocal on him being left out, aren't you PF?

He'll be a popular choice, demons fans will love seeing him, and love when he gets touches as he's such a superb user and decision maker.

I reckon how it'll play out, he'll have a huge first half, then as the game wears on he'll be shown up for his pace... and by the end of the week people will grudgingly accept he's done and you'll claim bragging rights.

With all that considered? I still want them to pick him.

I just want to win the game. Emotional sentiment must not get in the way. We have a serious chance this September...

not really being emotional

if it is a choice between JKH and JT in place of Jones I would go for JT.

JKH has had several chances and has failed miserably. JT is worth a go. His form at VFL level all year has been very sound and sometimes excellent as evidenced by the frequency with which he appears int he best players.

Somehow I think it will be just Gawn for Jones or JKH and Gawn for Jones and ??. Base this on Goodwin's belief in his game plan which I suspect does not favour JT.

In theory Trengove for Lewis or Tyson I can see.  Trengove for Jones - less so.

Jones is a big out.  It will then be up to how Goody decides to fill that void.  Does he throw Salem in to that role, meaning we have to replace Salem?  Or does Tyson play it?

Jones has been starting a lot on the wing this year.  Could that mean Stretch comes in?  Or will Lewis play Jones' role, meaning we have a spot on the HBF, which could be where Trengove slots in to (which is a different HPF role to what Wagner plays).

Will be interesting to see, but it's something I have great confidence in our FD making the right decision.

For Trengove to play at AFL level again he will need to be 2 steps ahead of everyone else in reading the play, if he isn't he will be 2 steps behind and will just be watching the other player run off with the ball.

There is some vision of him from last year that comes to mind of him running to a loose ball on the wing only for the opposition to run past him and collect the ball. Unless he has rectified this one way or the other he will be a liability regardless of the ground he is playing on.

I wouldn't say Jones has been playing a predominantly "inside" role, so not entirely a like for like imo. Jones gets on the outside a fair bit these days.

Yep, good point. Jkh might be a better like for like.

What's wrong with a stopping role?

Just ask Sloane, Cotchin and JJ about how they feel being buffeted from pillar to post

It's the only job he is going to get at AFL Level in 2017 if he gets a call up

Yes it is certainly getting harder. I think they should seriously consider Tenners as a replacement for jones. On the website, they confirm Jones 4-6 weeks, and recovering Hunt, Watts and Jetta, all of whom they expect to be fit.

With Jones out, it does leave a hole in the onfield  leadership. I don't feel Viney is as yet mature enough to provide that by himself, particularly when we need cool heads in a crisis. Everything you hear about Tenners is he has outstanding leadership abilities, and it will be really up to the likes of Lewis, Vince, Watts and Max together with Viney and hopefully Tenners to step up in that direction. It is not as if Jones is all that nippy himself. It his intensity at the ball which is elite, and in that Tenners could almost match him.

The news has certainly made Saturday that much harder, and leadership will be critical. So for me, I'd have the changes:

In:  Gawn Trengove

Out: Jones.  Neal-Bullen

Yeah, so do I. My previous was very glass half empty. I have a feeling they'll split the difference and take the quicker JKH over, but if we show signs of needing more hard ball gets on the inside, he'll come in subsequently.

If he does play, he's not a completely dumb move. As long as he's not expected to do anything more than what he does at the moment. TBH, I think people forget what a good overhead mark he is, and what a good shot at goal he is. I like the idea of some time spent in a pocket. Lord knows we've rotated plenty of blokes through there.

There's also something to be said for what it will mean to his team mates to see someone come back and play after being written off. Not to mention the fact it shows if you perform in VFL, you will be rewarded (eventually).

Thoughts?

Is Subi with its vast open spaces the best place for him to try a comeback?  Haven't seen him for years ......  does he have the necessary pace?

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.  Would be VERY pleased to see Trenners given another opportunity, and for him to finally get himself back to the form he had pre-injury, and to be a star on the big stage.  Would be SO good to see him a part of a successful tilt at finals glory by the MFC.

Time is still on his side, so here's hoping...!

Barrie - always respect your views as one who knows success. Would THIS be the best opportunity for Trenners to return?

As an endurance athlete, surely he is more likely to improve as the game goes on and slows down around him?

I don't think this has to be a selection made because of supporter sentiment.

If Jack has the runs on the board in the VFL, why can't he be a player worthy of selection?

One thing we know for sure. Sentiment won't be a factor in their decision. Perhaps if it were near the end of the season and we were out of finals contention it might be. But its not and we're not.

I hope we are past those days.

The key selection criteria in most cases for players to get a senior game is if they have 'kicked the door down'. Jack may not have done that but his form and past output justify giving him a chance.

All good points DD and if JT does get the call up i will be wanting him to do well. I just have my doubts he can keep up with the 2017 game. We need another flat out midfielder for the next 4-6 weeks, i don't think that is Trenners, but who knows what is being planned. The whole midfield may be reshuffled...

I willbe fascinated with what transpires

I'm thinking more that once the game settles down and West Coast realise they can't match it with us in contested ball, they'll back their skills and their knowledge of Subi and start playing keepings off. Mitchell knows a thing or two about that. Leading away from trenners, guys like Gaff will clean up.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
