The rise of the "Lay-up" goal?!

Was watching our goals video (again) and it occurred to me that we now kick a good number of what I'd call, for want of a better term, "Lay-up goals", where the balls delivered to another player who can play on and kick the goal from the goal square in space (the slam dunk to continue the basketball analogy).

i counted three such goals on Monday and we've been kicking them regularly this year as the team first, basketball and fast break football influences have rolled in. 

Petracca's to Jeffy the best example of the three. They are ripping goals and quite demoralising for the opposition, being the footy equivalent of being "dacked"...

is it just me or have we been kicking a lot more of these recently?

Yeah it's definitely a tactic. Push alot of numbers into the middle and run hard into the space, it's good to watch to long may it continue.

I think it comes about as a result of the press. Looks great when it happens but of course it happens the other way as well and then we are lamenting our lack of defence.

Would be interesting to study defensive zoning against the quick counter attack. For example does the small defender follow the ball carrying player or run to a spot in order to increase the chances of tackling the recipient.

Watts in the defensive goal square unattended was an interesting position late in the last quarter. I wonder whether it was a pre-planned tactic.

It is also a result because we are playing a lot more team orientated football rather than blazing away. Jeff Garlett has been super impressive in regards to this, he is always looking for someone in a better position which can create these opportunities.

Let's just face it - we are kicking a lot more goals full stop. So I would expect to see more of all different styles (long bombs a la Frosty, Jeffy trying to put one on Punt Rd from out of the goal square). It's a far cry from us kicking 3 goals for the day on QB 2014.

Garlett x 2 or 3 and Petracca x 1 both executed great "assists", that turned potential goals into absolute sodas.

And just on the subject of Monday's goals, I have watched Watts' sealer at least 20 times. The way that footage illustrates his gut run where he starts level with Adams and just leaves him in his wake is fascinating. Add to that Will Hoskin-Elliott just staying on his man, who was no danger, and just let Watts bring it to within 25/30m of goal. They were absolutely cooked and we were running all over them.

All teams push their players up the ground to try & lock the ball inside forward 50 which in theory results in more scoring shots. The result is there is a huge amount of space at the other end for the opposing team to run into. If the team transitioning manages to break the zone quickly it often results in a scoring chance. It's been the trend for a couple of years now. We are often on the receiving end of it as well.

Personally I think we lack instinct around goal. We try to find a suitable kicker by [censored] farting around with handballs which leads to a lot of turn overs in F50. We need someone who can jag one over their shoulder etc
