I might be the minority, but I'm a big Wagner fan, we need to remember how many games some of these guys have played before we critique them harshly. Wagner is good by foot and by the time he reaches 60 games will match Hibberd. This lad is yet to do a full preseason, he reads the play and he will set us up off half back as he grows in confidence for many years the come.

I'd rather someone who showed his feelings. He's a human being after all, not a Woolworths-type automaton.

Also, by the sounds of the game he played he certainly wasn't 'sooking'.

Sam Weideman - over four quarters played really well.  He is still so light that his best moments are Jack Watts type pieces of play, leading up to the ball carrier and being a link man.  I think he had a direct hand in five goals with his ground level play, (the bit of play to set up Lewis-Smith's goal was exceptional)and could have kicked five or six himself.  Still a fair way off being a consistent AFL key forward because he can't take compete physically to take the dominant marks fan crave, but this game suggests he is on the right track.  Probably needs to be shielded from AFL footy for a while to build confidence and strength.

He was OK, but isn't best 22 right now.  He has to get bigger in body IMO.  He's flashing about like a fly, but not doing enough right now.  Not back to his best yet.

Agree about kent what has happened. He used to be a reliable goal scorer and used to put on defensive tackles all the time. 

Gee I would just love to see Trenners go well and get himself back into the team. After his foot injuries and that period of dealing with the captaincy. Just think he deserves some luck.

 

I'd rather see him rookie'd than delisted completely.

Very different from Hibberd, and won't kick as well. But is better at some stuff than Hibberd too.

I think he's in a tough spot. He's not in the 22 for a reason. Hunt, Salem, Jordie, Hibberd, Jetta, Melksham, Vince all miles ahead. I expect in 2 years when Jordie hangs them up and Vince is gone, he'll take their place. But no-one should be too worried about him yet. Plenty of time.

I thought Wagner was clearly BOG and looked a cut above. Given his injuries it won't hurt him to regain touch at Casey. Seems to be a good decision maker and generates good supply from the backline. I think he will end up having a good career.

Here's the deal.  If Wagner emulates that performance at AFL level he doesn't get dropped.

The Wagner stuff snowballed from him apparently being 'dejected' at training.  Some get a hold of it and then the rest run with it.  It's silly.  The kid will be fine, but Salem is in our best side, while Wagner isn't.  Not to mention that they want Salem playing midfield which will free up Jordan Lewis to play the sweeper role more often across half back.  I'd rather Lewis there than Wagner at this point in time.

Yeah, was a rhetorical question.

I don't think Wagner was that good in his last game that he demanded being kept in. His first half actually was frustrating. Right now, it's Salem > Wags for anyone who can read the game.

I agree.  I think Wagner will be a good depth player for us, but Salem adds more for us at the minute than Wagner does.  

And the 'dejected' stuff at training is rubbish as well.  If, and it's a big if, the 'psychologists' of Demonland could pick up body language as some claim they can, then the kid needs to grow up and understand that this stuff happens.  I'd rather a player stick his head down and do everything he can to get back in the side, rather than 'sook' about it.

Yeah I don't believe this dejected stuff for a second. Could be dejected for any reason.

I reckon they'll both end up best 22 in a year or two. We do have a handful of guys who will move on soon.

I caught the end of this game after work.  One thing I noticed was The Weed refusing to take shots on goal.  He took a mark about 45m out directly in front and later another mark on the boundary.  In both cases he went for the pass and turned the ball over.  Is that usual for him?  If so, they need to iron it out of his game ASAP.  Both of those should have been scores and it's his job to take the responsibility to kick them.

He did the right thing when he was on the boundary.  He didn't "turn it over".

THE RACE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have landed in the Peter Jackson VFL top eight for the first time this year after a strong performance against Collingwood VFL at Casey Fields. 

The team made a shaky start to a scrappy game in which both sides displayed some poor skills, particularly with their disposal although the visitors' accuracy for goal made the game a much closer contest than it should have been.

The Demons welcomed back Jake Spencer in the ruck and, although he looked understandably rusty, his 35 hit outs aided by some good work from Declan Keilty were a highlight in a team that has so far this year been consistently beaten in the ruck department. The winning ruck gave it many opportunities to open up play and run the ball forward and this resulted in a dominating 55 to 36 advantage in the inside 50 count.

The teams are close competitors in the finals race and the Magpies made Casey rue some early missed chances in front of goal when they hit the lead with the opening two goals of the second term. However, from that point onward, the Demons took control with a six goal spree that stretched into the second half. Collingwood attempted a comeback with three goals on the run but Casey settled and was well in control even though it conceded some late goals in the end.

Defenders Josh Wagner (27 disposals, 1 goal) and Mitch White (18 touches) were superb in defence and James Munro played a great stopping role getting into the face of Magpie forward Kayle Kirby who was a match winner last week with six goals.

VFL interstate representative Bayley Fritsch underlined his talent with three first half goals and he looks eminently draftable. Ed Morris was another VFL-listed player who stood out. 

One of the highlights for Melbourne people would have been the form of key forward Sam Weideman who overcame a slow start to finish full of running kicking two games in a game in which he could easily have finished with five. With another preseason including more strength and conditioning work, he should become a regular fixture as an AFL key forward who can add further value by helping out in the ruck.

Other Demons who showed out were Ben Kennedy, Billy Stretch, Jack Trengove, Dean Kent and Jay Kennedy-Harris who called it a day at half time in order to stay fresh in the event of being required as an emergency for Monday. Corey Maynard continues to do well after his recent enforced two week lay off from concussion.

The win was a big improvement on the equivalent game from last year when the Casey side was kept to a mere two goals on a bog heap. This time the ground was in good nick and the Demons who have now won three games in a row, took the points because they had a clear skill advantage over their rivals.

They return to Casey Fields next Saturday night for a replay of last year's grand final against Footscray VFL although at least half of the team that took part in the disappointment of that loss will not be out there on the field this time around. A win is needed to keep them in the finals race.
