I'm firmly in the Goody camp. Even when I might disagree, such as with leaving out-of-form players in for too long, I can still discern and appreciate his m.o. Though I had started to get a bit concerned that he hasn't been able to drive the players across the line in our close ones - as well as the flat starts in the first and straight after the break. Then I read one the players said he's not the 'motivational speeches' type, but just tells the players where they need to improve. Thought maybe it would be an idea to let Macca take the last two minutes of the huddle. But Goody is a numbers man, and it will be frustrating, but modern AFL is about numbers, and their weight will tip in our favour. He's also had a difficult early apprenticeship with KPP injuries - even we arm-chair critics have struggled to come up with innovative stop-gaps or selection solutions - yet he's tried things, most of which have had an impact.

As I said earlier Jane I only saw the second half and jumped on here excited out of my skin! I got a bit of a shock when I accidentally walked in to another Demonland funeral.

Interesting. Not being fire and brimstone is something I'm interested in. One thing that does is it leaves it to the on field leaders to create that. I think that's why we've struggled in close ones. On field leaders playing perhaps a little nice. Philosophically though, it's good. It means we have that area to improve in. I always felt under Daniher he could get us up in crazy games, like beating Brisbane in Brisbane and WC in Perth... but that because he did that, the players didn't so much.

In terms of his in game options, how do we feel? I always felt Roosy didn't have the in game changes as a strength. So far Goody has done a few that have surprised us, and worked. Easy to say that though when we win I guess.

Seriously...you buy that rubbish... it's spin for we weren't effective, we were more incapable than capable.

I'm not sure if it's a tactic (unlikely) or if we're just taking time to settle into the game but I thought we were a far way off and looked really lazy in the first half. I'm not taking anything away from the win, just an observation.

A 65 point turn around is fantastic but we can't afford to get so far behind against the top teams or the teams we're competing against for a top 8 spot.

Never in doubt! When we got to 30 points down, I went out and put a rack of lamb in the weber. Came back in a little while later and we were in front. Was I surprised? Nah... staggered more like it. Those who are negative about this win need to think back to not so long ago when a 30 point deficit would have turned into a 90 point debacle. Those days seem to be behind us. Praise the Lord! GO DEES!

I thought our first quarter was fairly good, could have probably had a few more goals if we were a bit tidier with our handballing. Second quarter was below average but if we didn't waste so many shots on goal it wouldn't have seemed like such a disaster and our 2nd half was excellent, albeit against a below par looking Gold Coast

We haven't played a full game for longer than i can remember.

But i am interested in your take.

You seem distinctly dismissive of those who think 'scoreboard' too limited in scope.

Glad to get the win, but someone, I think it was @rjay, asked me last week what Goodwin should have done to change things in the second half when the momentum was clearly going against us. I said I would have put McDonald into the ruck a lot earlier and play Pedo out of the square. Funnily enough, they did this when they should have done it last week, which was half way through the third. Almost immediately, it turned the momentum of the game. Pedo straightened us up, despite being ordinary at ground level, and gave us a target that would take a half decent defender. And McDonald ended up contesting really well in the ruck. This was key to our turnaround. But, gee, we're frustrating to watch. So many of our guys are turnover merchants and poor decision makers. The beauty of our game style is we can pile on the goals like no other and very quickly. Given our emphasis on the contest, when Gawn comes back, we're going to be very hard to stop.

Onto the positives though. Jeffy was terrific for most of the game. Was our only consistent tackler in the last quarter too. Oliver had a great second half, as did Jones. Harmes made a poor decision or two, but for the most part, his hard running and goals were important. 

Back to the negatives. The commentators are raving about Lewis' second half. I thought he was solid in the last term and his first three quarters were terrible. His kicking and decision making has been shocking since his return. Anyway, he was good in the last. Meanwhile, Bugg was has kicked 0.7 in two weeks and must be close to the chop. You can't carry a guy who is playing forward, who can't kick to AFL standard. He's missed so many sitters in the last fortnight. Be interesting to see what we do with him. The plus is he's getting it. Wagner didn't hit a target in the first half, but slowly managed to have a few important marks and link up kicks. I wanted us to take the game on a little more today. Frost barely did. Hunt did a little bit, but not enough. We have to continue to be keen to move the ball quickly, but we also need to use our run where appropriate too and when Frost got tackled early (after a mindbogglingly poor decision), he wasn't confident enough to take the game on again really. 

Although he didn't have a lot of it, Viney led the tackle count again with a game high 11, which became really important to shutting down their ability to move the ball and get separation from the stoppages. Melksham avoided contact twice in the first quarter, but after that (perhaps the coach had a word?), he started to lay tackles, which is unlike him and ended with 5, plus a solid 32 disposal game. His overlap became really significant in the last. Oliver worked his way into the game a little slowly. A few errors have crept into his game in the last fortnight, but he's managed to get to the bye and will have a week to freshen up for the Collingwood match. I thought he could have kicked it a little more often today and he has to know when the overhead handball is on, because it can look sublime, but it could also be costly if he's not careful with it.

If we'd said, once Gawn had gone down, that we'd be 5-5 at the break, after the Freo loss, I probably would have taken it. The biggest positive for us right now is that our percentage is so healthy and should only get better with Gawn's inclusion after the bye. I also give us a chance to come from behind on most occasions now. Whether we win it is another story, but at least we're showing that fight, which is great for a young and developing team.

Totally agree. We won ugly today which is  indication this team albeit a few players down, is staying in games. In past would have been blown away. Take winning ugly any time. Bring Hogan & Gawn back in next few weeks and should come home strong. Some players still need to have composure at times but will take this win and look forward to games after the bye. Would love to win 3-4 in a row, ugly or not.

AF in the main i agree

 Makes you wonder sometimes what's the rocket that finally gets them (box) active. What they did at halftime could/should have been done 30 mibs earlier.

This then suggests hindsight provides clarity ( alone) but so many games have been aligned 30 mibs late. That's not the players, that's the box.

For them to come out with glib observation is inadequate.

We eventually got going... we're so late in starting.
