Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

must say jack, that the words sympathy, respect and port melbourne don't exactly gel with me

Precisely. I was a witness to a Port Melbourne versus Sunshine AFL blood bath in the early 60's. I lived across the road, snuck under the fence. A Sunshine player - Ken Seymour -  had to raise his arms and box away every time the ball came near him.

Of course, the Sunshine players were totally innocent.

think you meant vfa, diets. and it wasn't just the players, the supporters were feral and had a reputation of spitting on the visiting team as the players went through the wire fenced visitors race, win or lose. the female supporters being the best phlegmers

Yes, VFA.

Ironically, an ex Port player - Jack Storey - became the Sunshine Under 16 Coach. I played in the ruck as second ruckman in a Final in 1966 against West Footscary. Their Number one ruckman was Laurie Stanilands. Our Numero Uno, a pugsly Alan Morrow type, punched Sandilands behind play and West Footscay lads came from everywhere to even up. They thought I'd done it. It was all I could do to stop myself blurting 'It asn't me, it wasn't me...'

Anyway, I kicked two goals that day, I always played well against West Footscray.

Anyone know what is up with Billy S? Not sure why he was dropped and I thought he would dominate at this level.

Don't quote me on this, it's the impression I get, but in the VFL I imagine that overall as the speed of the game is down then there are less possessions had. It would then be more likely that in and under players will get more of the ball as well, plus outside movers will find it harder to get clear/clean space to be effective in.

So he might not be getting 'heaps' of it, but may not also be playing badly, just the drop down in standard might not suit Stretch as much as some others. I still think he's going to be very good for us long term, but still is a 3rd year player so where he is isn't a surprise, given there's probably specific things the coaches will want him working on.

Firstly, congratulations to the Casey Demons on the win - it certainly did come from left field.

Secondly, about the team song ...

We might have taken over the club but I can't agree with this - it's disrespectful to the last vestige of the old Springvale club even if very few of the old Scorpion faithful still follow Casey. But it's also disrespectful to Port Melbourne which is the oldest of the existing VFA clubs still in the competition and it makes a mockery of the fact that they've sung this song for decades in a competition where the Casey Demons have been around for five minutes. Surely, a slight rearrangement of the old Springvale/Casey song could have been an appropriate concession to history and tradition?

I defy anyone to tell me that the Casey team played fine in the year of thirty-nine!

If the MFC strategy is an eventual stand-alone reserves team, then adopting the Melbourne team song makes sense. It's just part of a gradual transition such as changing the name to Casey Demons and the jumper to a modified Melbourne jumper which have both happened this year. I also don't see it as disrespectful to the Port Melbourne team. After all, only one of the teams will be singing it at the end of any game played between the two.

Just to satisfy my curiosity, what was the Casey Scorpions song? Was it a standard derivative or something truly unique (for better or worse)?

Glory Glory Alleluia !! and the flag goes marching on etc etc

Interesting that both MFC and Casey's songs are derivatives of US Civil War songs.

Reading Plapp you would think Jake M, Billy, ANB and possible Ben Ken are all in the mix for promotion. Stretch or Melch for Salem? Stretch or ANB for Kent? Good to hear Mitch KIng get a wrap for his ruck work too.

For a moment there I thought you were discussing cling wrap. Shows how the mind can interpret words before their true meaning becomes clear from the context.

Whilst I'm in agreement with what you are saying generally WJ, I reckon the 'anyone' you refer to would have more chance of remembering whether Casey did than the MFC

Really need that irony font.

I guess my slightly obscure point was that it appears that with his stats he doesn't seem to figure in any consideration for promotion and I constantly am told he is too slow.

But you probably got that.

fwiw, i doubt he'll get a game this year. which considering his first year form, his dedication to the club and unfortunate injury is a sad outcome

We were talking about Max Gawn's injury and how it had affected the team structure. He said that Jake was a ruckman whereas Declan was a footballer trying to be a ruckman. I am not sure whether he made this comment because of his current physique or age. He wasn't being detrimental to Declan or Jake but it was more a comparison to Pedersen who he believed was too good to be in the VFL. He said that Pedersen was a footballer who could pinch hit if necessary and he felt that as soon as we had lost Jake, Cam should have been straight into the team. He was complimentary of Declan but not so much Jake who he said was no good with the ball at his feet which we kind of know anyway (but I think has improved in this area). I am not sure that he could criticise anyone as his knees were shot so I don't think he would be bending down to get the ball very often.

I really started to notice Declan at Casey last year and his ferocity at the ball and I think he is a real prospect for the seniors (hopefully with us). I prefer him playing forward and I actually tried to sponsor him this year but missed out. It was interesting to hear from someone with another perspective. I hope I didn't offend. It would be difficult if you personally know the players and read some of what is written on "land". I do know one of the parents of a player that is crucified on here and I hope they never read what is said. It would be heartbreaking.

Great post.... well balanced and informative

Reminds us that the players are just young men and we armchair critics need to chill out sometimes.

No offense at all, as I said I was just curious as too how other people saw him as a player. Thank you very much for your insight :)

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
