Beyond our teams list, I think (hope) what holds us in good stead for recruiting/trading for one or two guns for 2018 are the types of wins against Adelaide. Surely in discussion with agents, this is used as leverage as to why we would be now a destination club. We have good depth, and I imagine for some players who would ONLY be depth, perhaps there would be a reluctance to battle it out to get a cemented spot, however someone who would be classified as a certainty (insert names here) surely would feel as though they would compliment the rest of the list on their rampage towards multiple premierships.

The club would be doing it's due diligence, but I don't think we're in the market for a 'gun' as such, but would be in the market for players who will complement our list.  Who those are is anybodies guess.  I know we could probably use another key defender, but outside of Steven May and possibly Jake Lever there isn't a whole lot of quality on the market.  We will need to be clever with our strategies to land the players we need.

Have no doubt the club has a strategy and that will not be just about this eos or next but how we roll players in (and out ) to fulfill roles.

I know I've mentioned it recently but hearing Mahns say he used to get laughed at by agents when he called them, to now where he has agents calling him is such a better place to be.

We'll need more than the win against Adelaide to attract players of Lever and May's quality.

There were a multitude of contributing factors as to how and why we were able to land Lewis so I hope posters don't feel the need to use him as an example.

We're definitely in the conversation for target players now but as far as Martin and Kelly go, we'll be behind a handful of clubs. St Kilda for example will have two first round draft picks this year. Theirs and Hawthorn's so they'll have some serious bargaining power.

Whilst our injuries have been unfortunate, they're definitely not as bad as some on here have said. We just won against near full-strength Adelaide at their home coming off a shocking loss. We won because of the way we played over four quarters. And we won without all those players that poster's said we sorely miss. We need to continue to play the way we did against Adelaide if we want to be in the market for any serious talent. Especially given how even the comp is atm.

But like Wiseblood said, we need to fill holes rather than go hard for established stars. All energy should be put toward making stars out of our own young talent. 

A key-back and some class and foot-skills through our midfield is all we're lacking. I like Stretch, but not as much as some. He is nowhere near damaging enough with his disposal and I reckon we could do with a hard-running winger with elite foot skills.

We're part of the players and agents conversation now, "where do you want to go? Melb looks good can you get me their?". 

While not for all players and whether we can meet the teams demands we are in the conversation.

Considering we passed on both of them in their draft years, do you believe they'd want to come to us?

I think there are players who'd want to come to us for sure. But not bonafide stars.

Still better to build a champion team rather than chasing a team with some champions.

I think this destination club is the biggest Myth every.  Players leave and choose new clubs based a few things, the only instance where your teams performance/projection would even be considered is the Go home factor

1) Money

2) The other club doesn't want them and need to play somewhere

3) The go home factor and usually the club that gets that player outside Geelong it will be about money.  Geelong is lifestyle or you lived in the region and why wouldn't you go and live in Torquay or another coastal town.

Yes but we were able to convince Hibberd as well who is a quality player. Players will start to see we are creating a strong team here with plenty of hardness and flair.

I like the Hawthorn model where they usually got in one real quality player each year, rather than 2 or 3 B graders i.e  Burgoyne, Gibson, Lake, Frawley that filled a need at the time. slowly but surely building the jigsaw pieces to complete the puzzle.

We have brought in Lewis and Hibberd who are big ticks so far. I think if we can get a quality key tall backmen, and they are hard to get, we will be doing well. The other would be a real quality outside runner like an Isaac Smith type. If we can complete just one of these in the off season we will be doing well. Quality will be the key.

Perhaps I'm speaking about Martin more so than Kelly. I don't know what will happen to Kelly. Maybe Salem and Hunt can get in his ear.

I just couldn't see Martin wanting to come to us over St Kilda for example if both clubs offered the same money... One reason being that we passed him up in the draft.

To your first point: Hibberd's best friend, literally his best mate was already at our club, (Jake Melksham). Simon Goodwin was an assistant coach at Essendon and clearly knew Hibberd well.

I would say both of those things weighed heavily in our favour, don't you think?

 

Second point: We're a yoyo team atm. We need to show more than one week of strong form.

i think you badly over-rate this "passed him up in the draft" factor. players and their managers are not that dumb

if we had promised a player we'd take him in the draft then reneged at the last minute, or said derogatory things about a player during the draft then that might be a bit different.

but just simply passing over a player in the draft is of no real consequence

Martin will go to whichever team offers the most money, which will be Hawthorn. 

And considering his fathers involvement within a bikie gang, I wouldn't want the guy anywhere near the club.

Maybe. I'm just going off gut feel and in the case that we were one of two teams offering the same amount.

'steve', the bargaining power of clubs in a trade situation has little or nothing to do with it these days.

If the player wants to go to a particular club and if they are out of contract then the deal gets done.

I understand your point but satisfying the club has taken a back seat to satisfying the player.

If the player is out of contract they will get to where they want to go, not where the club want them to go.

^ As has been said before, contracts rarely matter these days if a player wants out.

If Adelaide had satisfied Carlton with their offer, he would have been there. They didn't and he stayed.
